In my personal opinion the fire conditions warranted an aggressive interior attack they already had a continuous water supply established; so there is no reason why they should've been ordered to perform exterior operations conservation of LIFE and property is what I was taught.
I don't know, and I wasn't there, but in the military, if there are people, that can possibly be saved, you go for it. The same way, the secret service would throw themselves in front of a bullet, to protect the president, that's what people, who are trained and equipped do...I am not a firefighter, nor can I say that it would have helped, but that's what they get paid for... The same way an E-1 used to get $500 a month to clean latrines in peacetime, and dodge bullets in war time.
@AJBMP43 If that is how that scene looked on arrival then those people were already dead. Nothing without gear could have survived that kind of heat and smoke and nothing would've been gained by sending men in, however much they (and I if I was there) wanted to go in. Risk vs. reward. Now, if they had been on scene awhile and didn't go in before the conditions were what they are in the video, then that's a problem. The worst thing I see is opposing hoselines.
Theres nobody alive in that house. Look how fast the front room flashed. The fire is already in the attic AND the basement. That much heat in the residence means its now a recovery, not a rescue. Chief made a good call.
Looking at the stage of the fire at the beginning, the chance of survival looks to be minimal at best. I believe that an interior attack would have been accomplished pretty easy. The house looks to be 4 maybe 5 rooms and it wasn't through the roof yet so why not go inside. Looks like all that is going on is shoving all the heat and fire back inside. Maybe the Chief saw or knew something else going on dunno. Wasn't there just armchair it.
Im sorry but thats probably just one order that I wouldnt have been able to follow. With 2 or 3 lives at risk inside that house I would have atleast made an attempt to do an agressive interior attack and make an attempt to conduct a primary search. Thats just my opinion.
Not sure why this IC declared a defensive operation, smart move? Clearly no, due to the loss of life inside this house. Just by looking at this video it's clear the main body of fire would’ve been knocked by an AGGRESSIVE interior attack. We are in the business of possibly getting hurt, while we try to avoid at all cost, it is firefighting! Just like a football player knows he will get hurt at some point in his career!
Judgment call. While I think that a line could have made it in, would it have caused the occupants to survive.....no. Would members have been injured? Probably.
I hope the surviving family member now owns the department. She had until she turned 20 to get even with this chicken fire chief who should of never been permitted to wear a white hat yet alone join a fire department
This is from May 1994 and shows what happens when people who have no clue what to do are placed in charge.
@PoppaBlue59 This video has been used in incident command class due to the vast controversy of the Chiefs orders and actions NOT the FF actions.
I was recovering from being blown up in Beirut and yes I still did S&R with a concussion and a total loss of hearing due to the blast. Thank God most of hearing has returned. I have 38 yrs on the job.
@mcfdtv Thank you for your service to our country, and I mean that. If you are talking about the '83 Marine barracks attack, I was stationed in GA. When that happened. I had just rotated back from Germany. They didn't like us there either.
@PoppaBlue59 They hit us good 2X and yes it was the Marine Barracks. Did not expect our fuel truck to do us in. As for not liking us. I figured they came after me the 2nd time as I refused to die in the 1st round.

I'm a CT firefighter. That is one of the toughest calls to make, but I'd rather keep my guys alive rather then risking two more lives I have to save.
We cannot make the save every time, but we are concerned with Three Things:
Life Safety: Save who we can, when we can, but not risk our life when the signs tell us not to
Incident Stabilization: are we able to control what is going on with the resources we have at our disposal
Property Conservation: Save what we can, do the best for what we can't

It is a shame that the family lost so much.
