  • No male singer touches me like he does.

  • @mariusfelix pause.

  • Maybe he drank too much that day.

  • @kimancuo

He does have a reputation of doing that... it would certainly explain the flat singing.

  • I'm sorry but this guy is all over the place. Sharp, flat, etc. Terrible.

  • ....ick.

  • at my school there is a declamation competition that we can compete in if we want to. you have to recite a german, spanish, or french poem and i chose this one. its absolutely beautiful.

  • Okay...

Even if Prey is a little flat in tuning, this is just beautiful, he catches the spirit and delivers it beautifully. Frühlingsglaube is not an easy song to sing, and you can name any legendary singer you like, and he/she has been flat while performing, To me what's between the notes is most important...

  • @Peterryom

    Original thinking, Miles.

  • i really love prey, but this version is really not good, its flat and sometimes his voice nearly breaks

  • FLATTTTTTTTT

  • good '0' !!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow he's amazing...some little flat notes i think, but omg amazing feeling and vocal ability

  • Wow, this is so beautiful. Amazing job.

  • -> Babs22h

  • He feels what he says. Lots of important singers doesn´t. He is an instrument of the poet´s feelings.

  • present me a true singer that never went sharp or flat in his life!

  • guys stop giving people thumbs down for saying its out of tune, lol.. it is a fact, but i can see where his voice used to brilliant and still is at times within this piece.

  • what is this taken from? It loks kinda like inside the Actors Studio with the guy sitting at the little table looking like James Lypton

  • I don't think the man sitting at that table is your James Lypton, because this clip is taken from the ZDF (second channel of german television), and I think it was originally produced for one of these channels (be it first, second, or one of the others).

I think, the "man at the table" is the host, commenting on the Lieder, Prey sings, and giving information about the composer etc. Many series in the 80s/90s were like this.

  • I think that Leonard Hokanson is a tragically underrated pianist. While being utterly fantastic at accompanying, I don't think that he should have to. His music is beautiful.

  • This is not Prey at his best. What montestone said three months ago was interesting about his being flat sometimes throughout the 70's and 80's. His work on the Angel recording of Ariadne Auf Naxos (as Harlequin?) was devastatingly beautiful. Other recordings from the 70's and 80's show what a glorious voice he had and what a master he was.

  • I think that Prey´s entire career has been glorious (not just the 70´s or 80´s), he not only had a wonderfull voice but a complete self-control over his instrument.

I agree with "mahayana76" when said that he captured Schubert sensitivity. I love his interpretation of Schubert instead of Fisher Dieskau´s cold singing, for example.

  • What you consider his cold singing is just the pure, smooth head voice he often employs in Schubert's lieder. They have two different voices. Prey is a base-baritone while Dieskau is a lyric baritone. The interpretations suit the voice.

  • Hi, I am sorry but I do not agree wiht you, though I do respect your opinion.

I was not talking about voices (Prey´s is clearly more beatifull), but of singing style. In my opinion, DFD seems to be more inmaculate, intellectual, distant and therefore cold. On the other hand, Prey looks more humain, close to the public. But I repeat this is just my opinion, if everyone would think like me we would not have this kind of debate. Fortunatelly this does not happen.

  • Wow. I have NEVER heard someone desribe Fischer-Dieskau as "cold." I mean, if Fischer-Dieskau has faults, being "cold" is definitely not one of them.

Why even bring Fischer-Dieskau up at all? Prey is fine on his own. You don't need to juxtapose Prey with Fischer-Dieskau to make Prey seem better.

    This is a beautiful performance.

  • how right you are - they are both different temperments

and impress depending on our own mood at the time.

    Both are masterful artists .

  • well said

    +1

  • é così che si canta! braaaaaaavooooooo!

  • Really out of tune but definitely a great musician. But my favorite is Fischer-Dieskau ...

  • ok i am an inexperienced wannabe classical/baroque singer ...please tell me whats wrong with the way he sings this!

  • @Babs22h Nothing!

  • Really outstanding. He captures Schubert's sensitivity and the incredible vulnerability of this music.

  • Wonderful, so moving!

  • oh what a treasure! one of the most beautiful schubert lieds sung by one of the greatest baritones!

  • I love this song...it's one of the fist things I ever learned in college as a voice major (When I still sang baritone). His tuning seems a little suspect in spots though.

  • Yes. Prey was sometimes quite flat in the 70s and 80s. Then some kind of miracle happened. I heard him live several times in the 90s and he was spot on all the time. A mystery.

  • The problem: alcoholism. Seriously

  • 'TheUrbanExplorers':

I'm doing a thourough research for a paper I want to write about Hermann Prey.

It's the very first time I see someone saying that Prey became a 'heavy alcoholic'.

Would you be so kind to point me the source of your information?

    Much obliged!
