brewman454... once a diesel engine starts running on it's own oil it will keep running away until the 1) the oil runs out; 2) the engine disintegrates mechanically; or 3) you cut off the air. In order to cut off the air you have to get right next to an engine that is is in a run away condition. No thanks.
@AlanMcYou I don't know what you mean "running on it's own oil", but if you turn the engine off with the key, an electrovalve cuts the fuel feed, and if that doesn't work you put it in the highest gear and slam on the brakes. There's no need to let a good car just burn away.
@IuTiubTM It is running on engine oil, usually through a blown turbo seal. If it is a manual then you might be able to stall it out. In practice, a runaway engine tends to make people leave the scene quickly. There is no telling how soon parts will start coming off the engine. And, face it, once the engine runs away you are looking at major work to repair it. No sense getting injured too.

If I had to guess what happened I'd say that it's a turbo diesel and the turbo seals let go and the engine started to run on the motor oil???
