I connected the ps3 to my Yamaha 6.1 receiver just like this. At the ps3 audio settings, i noticed you only selected Dolby Digital. I selected Dolby Digital and DTS. Would this make any difference? Thanks :)

I had a question..I got a 2.1 set, connected to my tv. My ps3 is connected with an HDMI cable to my tv..When I watch tv, the 2.1 set makes a nice sound, BUT when I play ps3, the sound quality sucks..so I need a s-video cable OR a optical cable/digital out?! my 2.1 set doesnt got this input..so the optical cable must also go in the tv (if that port exist at my tv..)..so which would be better in my case? the s-video cable OR the digital out cable?

@Muhneds I lol'd at the person who commented above you! Didn't need to change the settings on my PS3 though. PS3 connected to HDTV via HDMI, Hometheatre connected to HDTV via HDMI also, now the optical cable is connected from HDTV to hometheatre. When I play the PS3 and turn on the hometheater of course I have surround, likewise when I switch to Cable TV i have the same. Tnx for the video though

@Muhneds I finally figure it out My surround sounds works with the HDMI but the sound from my TV wont work otherwise I just can have the HDMI with the sound coming out of the TV but it sounds better with surround sound

I connected my optical cable to my samsung Surround sound for audio and my hdmi to tv for visual, changed to optical in settings but STILL got no sound :(

@jjtao good job, try to turn it off and open it again and run the game, if the sound STILL not coming !? go to setting (on your samsung ) and change the source ( mine is aux ) so try to change the source until you hear the sound , keep me updated.

Hi, I have a 42in. phillips tv connected to my ps3 via hdmi cable. I just recently bought a vizio sound bar which I connect that to my ps3 with a digital optical cable. I get sound from the menu of the ps3, but when I start up a video game the sound is gone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@cassandracolleen well, let's talk in more details to solve your problem. My sound system is JVC so I choose this setting on 01:24 and it works , sometimes it doesn't work , I just turn it off and open it again , it will work ,

don't try to listen to sound during the main menu , try to open the game and check the sound .

I have a PS3, Satellite receiver, Panasonic HDTV and Pioneer stereo receiver.

I have a HDMI running from PS3 to tv. I have HDMI running from sat receiver to tv. I have the PS3 A / V multi cable running from the PS3 to a ''Y'' A / V splitter that runs to the Pioneer receiver then splits off to run to the sat receiver.

I have to turn on my PS3 to get surround sound.

My Pioneer receiver doesn't have an optical connection. Would a Dig Optical cable help anywhere here?

BUT you have good devices bro , shall I give you a suggestion ? if you can go to Panasonic store and ask the sales man about this point !! because I tried optical cable only !! I do not have an LCD/LED T.V so I can only join my ps3 to the T.V via the red/white/yellow composite wires. (No optical cable/HDMI slot)

My home theatre has an HDMI cable so I joined that to my PS3.

This setup did not work. I can't understand why the LED T.V would matter to get surround sound.

@SyNMeL No Worriens , there is a video on youtube , they uploader used compsite wires to get surround sound, you can you use it , the difference between optical and composite wires is the clear sound , because optical is a digital sound

Helpful video, but I have a question. I have an HDMI cable connecting my PS3 to my TV. And an HDMI cable connecting my TV to my receiver (in this case, its a Bose 123 series 3 receiver with DVD player).

Do I still need the digital optical cable connection to get the best sound? Or will it feed through the TV into the receiver via the HDMI hookups?

@dgl1976 Thanks. In your case , you have two type of sounds , "surround sound" if you are watching anything through DVD player (movies for example ) BUT in your ps3 !! you can hear the sound from Screen only because ps3 needs optical cable to be surrond !!

@grindhouse141 absolutely mate :), the optical cable allows you to realize the difference . very very pure , soft , and clear sound , you can even hear more deep details in any game, war games you can hear for example the steps, breathing , and don't forget the surround effects of anythings, cars or whatever

@tontopuerco :) No , it's not a problem , it's just diffident name of the mode :) if your Aux doesn't work , change it to other modes until you hear the sound from the system . keep me updated :) it will work don't worry :)

Firstly you have to plug-in all cabels as well (whatever were they -hdmi-or optical-or requal Auxilary/compsite as you mentioned ).Then go to ps3 setting ( sound setting ) and choose the sound method , you want from Hdmi ? you can do it , composite , you can do it also, and so on .

@xregizorx hummm , what about the setting ( ps3 setting + hometheatre setting ) if any modes doesn't work , try another mode until it works , my ps3 sound mode works with ( dolby ) and hometheater (aux) , so try another mode until you hear the sound

I tried this but I only have 1 optical socket which my sky box is fitted to.I tried an optical splitter but got no sound at all out of anything.

Okay so I have followed all of the directions and are still getting no sound from my pioneer surround system. Its an older model would that affect anything? wI have the hdmi from the tv to the ps3 and the optical into the surround from the ps3. The only thing I dont have is the AUX option on my surround. Any ideas??

@millerjv well done , you did everything correctly , but you only have to get the remote control of your surround system ( or dvd or receiver whatever you like to call it ) and find the button which called "input" or "function" and press it until you find (Aux mode) , make sure you put the setting like me in your ps3 . And don't worry your surrond system works because you have the optical cable's slot. So it's a setting issue. Tell me if It doesn't work we will still together until we solve it.
