  • I can't believe it took me so long to notice this: this movement from Hanson's 2nd is the model for John Williams' score to the film "E.T." With few exceptions, it almost mirrors the soundtrack from the start of the bicycle chase to the end credit roll. There are even similar unusual chords and brass effects.

  • why is the title "Romantic"? It doesn't sound romantic at all!

  • @neodasan "Romantic" doesn't necessarily mean "lovey-dovey." It refers to heightened emotional states. Novels were called "romances" because they dealt with big emotions. Howard Hanson's 2nd symphony premiered in 1930. Most music was moving away from 19th Century romanticism, but he felt that this work rather hearkened back to the earlier style, hence the title.

  • Respond to this video... @neodasan Incidentally, if you listen to the entire work, there's a theme in the 2nd movement that could qualify as "romantic" in the other sense: it's the start of the love theme Miklos Rosza wrote for the 1940 film "Thief of Bagdad."

  • I was made aware of this piece from the movie "Alien".

  • @fargenbastich Yeah me too! beautiful song!

  • Sounds better for orchestra.

  • is this a band arrangement?

  • Yes it is.
