Judy Davis was the one that really deserved this one. Field is annoying. And by the way, with the exception of "A Passage To India", what a bunch of largely forgettable movies these actresses starred in. I can't believe "Places In The Heart" also won Best Screenplay that year; clearly, 1984 wasn't good for mainstream H'Wood movies.
