If the song's in 5/4, why does Sting himself count it in as 5/8? 5/4 vs. 5/8 is a silly, academic discussion, and some have it completely opposite. 5/8 means twice the BPM. Music 101: the 8 means an 8th note gets 1 beat. Anyway, the main parts of the drum, bass and keyboard pattern repeat twice as fast - half a 5/4 measure, or 5/8. The hi-hat accents and some other things resolve every 2 measures, 5/4. I would write this song in 5/4, as Sting said, but count it in 5/8, as Sting DID in the video.
sick right? but did you see sting shoot him a nasty look..ugh..god forbid someone other than sting himself adds creativity to one of his songs--all he's really doing is adding the sound analog effect of fleeing after sting sings that verse..give yer band credit where it is due..that was a genius fill on Sancious's part
that could have been a look like what was that? that sounded good! Sting is all about appreciating what other artists bring to his music. Thats why he hires muscians who are way way better than him. He does give credit and shares the spotlight with other muscians very well.
5/8 or 5/4, they equate to the same thing. but i'd say that vinnie is implying a 5/4 feel. he is trying to smooth the groove over so it doesn't sound odd- that's the genius of his musicality here. go to 2:04 and listen to vinnie's bass drum- that's the quarter note. if vinnie and the band were implying a 5/8 feel, the music would cycle through its motif much sooner. but his implied feel and the music doesn't recycle until five of those bass drum hits are made. That adds up to 5/4.
no it doesnt because he is playing an eigth note on the BD, like he does on the recorded version in the 2nd verse. The backbeat is on beat 4 of 2 bars of 5/8, because of the cross rhythm he plays on the hi-hat in the verse it gives the illusion of one bar of 5/4 when in fact it is 2 bars of 5/8
I took it upon myself to try and transcribe the original recording and I ended up writing it in 5/4 rather than 5/8. When in 5/4 the fastest type note needed (so far) are semi-quavers or 16th notes. If it was 5/8 they would be demi-semi-quavers or 32nd notes, and that would be bloody hard to write let alone read.
Also get a metronome and set it to crotchet or quarter notes at 184bpm (roughly the tempo of the song)and then half (92bpm)and choose which you'd count in with. Me, like most people, and Sting himself, would choose the former, suggesting 5/4.
it would probably make more sense to count 5/8 at 92 as the song is more of a laid back feel. the point about 32nds makes sense as 5/4 would be easier to read, but the feel of the song (which determines the tempo) is 5/8 in my (and many other session drummers) opinion.
"This is Vinnie. A band is only as good as his drummer, right? Vinnie Colaiuta is one of the greatest drummers in the world or the greatest."....a quote from Sting himself when introducing Vinnie at a concert..
The time is in 5/4, not 5/8 Some of you are hearing a 2 bar pattern, and placing an 8 as the bottom number, if this is so, then you have to change the 5 to a 10! hence 10/8 time....The count is 1-2-3 1-2 The same as brubecks take five piece from 1959.
Sorry about that, i was thinking Saint Augustine In Hell, this song is in 5/4, can be counted as 5/8, but because the top number is odd, this also happens in this song
this time signature is easy to play, the only part that might be difficult is where vinnie plays quarter notes on the Ride because in 7/8 time signature, the quarter notes turns into upbeat notes when changing measures, but damn Vinnie is the best ever in my opinion, that fill at 3:30 is amazing
Yes that can be sort of difficult. That and the accents on the hi hat over 5. That and the crazy places he puts notes in the chorus. That and the ridiculously sublime and insane outro. :)
Does anybody have "Straight to my Heart" from this tour? This is when Sting was at his best with just these guys, although Dominic Miller could have been replaced.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just don't want drummers out there to go misinformed. I went to a clinic Vinnie gave and he explained everything about this song. It's in 5/8. So if you're a drummer out there trying to learn this song, think of it in 5/8 instead of 5/4...it makes it much easier to count the accents!
[Sting]: Seven Days (1993) is just a piece of fun. I wanted to write a song in 5/4. I'd never written in 5/4 before, and it really begged to be played with in a frivolous way. It would be hard to do anything very ponderous in 5/4.<< This is from the man who wrote it not the drummer!
This is nuts. I can't fathom playing the bass and singing LEAD vocals in this time signature. Absolutely crazy...and amazing song, one of my favorites. Thanks for this video!!!
Check out the live version in Oslo (if you can find it, concert called 'Humanity Solution') - I reckon Vinnie does it even better....outstanding. He is a God.
I feel it in 5/4 but would count it in 5/8. Try it you'll see what i mean

Back in 1994 I saw that concert on Stings world tour here in Vienna at the Stadthalle.
That song in particular got me interested in him and I soon bought "Message in a box".
Love that song to this day, although it reminds me of stuff...
Still, that song and that performance made me a Sting and Police-Fan
Aaah, good times^^

i love how sting holds back a laugh of disbelief and amazement after vinnie's break. at least it sounds like that.
