Nice setup for fish and newt, but that Tiger Salamander should not be in there. It's a beautiful specimen, however, at that stage in life, they are no where near water.
@FloridaTexasHerper thanks for the info. sometimes even good pet keeps like myself made mistakes in the past. always research then get a pet. but don't worry, people informed me of this fast, and he was moved to a proper setup.
@XxDeadScopexX most people don't know how to care for GSPs. GSPs actually need SALTWATER. As babies, they are born in freshwater, but as they age, they need more and more salt in their water, without it, they get sick and die.
just asking if that tiger ever goes fully swimming by lke being in the middle of the water level because tigers are terrestrial except for when they mate
@SketchySk8r yes he swam in this tank quite often. The tank is changed now and he is moved, but yes, he swam quite often, and would even sit on the bottom of the tank for a few minutes at a time.
Thanks for the comment, yeah the fish are doibg good so far, but the rock shrimp dies already :/ going to buy 1 more today and gonna try out frozen foods
i just got a waterdog and was wondering if you know how to make them lose their gills and become the tiger salamander. if you do....please tell me. and will you make a vid of your axolotl!!
@MyFishies you wait :) I've heard some things can make them change faster, like less oxygen in the water, but I think they do it themselves over time.
@earthling1984 ok...ill wait! i used the heli in my new (crappy) attack of the pets 2 just to let you know im using the awesome heli u gave me! thanks for givin it to me again!
@MyFishies Yeah, just let him do what he is going do to. I actually like when they are waterdogs :) I had some waterdogs years and years ago, I have no idea how old they were when I go them, but they stayed waterdogs for about 3months then changed. Thanks for letting me know about the mCX! I will check out your new video and I am glad you are enjoying it!!!
No good. They need land. My salamander was only in this tank for a short time A bit after he changed from waterdog to salamander I modified his setup with more land.
you could, but remember salamanders like ground/land much more than newts. Salamands should have a lot of land area to walk on, newts are more like turtles in they usually are in the water, but sometimes come out and sit on land.
For the future. Tigers are terrestrial, they just need a water bowl. Fire Bellies can't be with fish, it's just not safe. Google Caudata Culture and look for a species mixing article.
Yea the tank worked well, everyone lived. I changed the setup of this tank though and moved the fish to other tanks. As for burying substrate, who in the tank wants/needs that?
your other animals are fine except your tiger salamander. he needs to be move to a terrestrial tank with a large shallow water dish and soft moss or soil bedding. about a 20 gallon tank should do for 1.
get rid of the fire bellied newt cuz it eventually will be eaten by the frog or sally, it only gets 6 inches long and the thers get 8 inches to 1 foot long.
I know how these animals grow. The frog is still small enough he doesn't eat anyone. Once my razorback musk turtle grows a little larger, the frog will be going in his tank. Already ahead of you, :) I sometimes put odd animals together, but I always have plans for them as they age.
I know this, I have had them together many many months with no problems. When I initially put them together it was just to test and see if they would do fine together, cus people always say they won't. They have done fine. Also as said the amphibian will be in my turtle tank soon, just want to give the turtle a little longer to grow another bit. He was only quarter size when I got him a couple months ago.
you need to move your tiger to a tank with 90% land mainly soil with plants and a little bit of water. i would pray that your paddled tail newt doesnt come on land because your tiger may attack it or eat it. tiger salamanders are horrible swimmers , they love to burrow under ground.
He's cool. I have added a few more turtle docks also. He usually chills up on the docks and when I throw in rosies he dives in to feed. I also give him crickets and other food. He never attacks any of the newts or anything. The one I am worried about is the African clawed frog... once he gets bigger I'll have to decide what to do with him, but for no he hasn't attacked anything but feeders.
thats completly untrue...tiger sals are great swimmers. as are all salamanders, newts and snakes, weather they are "aquatic" or "terrestrial" all of the animals mentioned are great swimmers. no exceptions. though it is true, to relieve stress, tiger sals should be able to burrow so they feel secure. also the frog will definatly eat anything in that tank- or at least injure it in an attempt to do so. even the newt. also, different species of amphibians' secretion can be deadly to eachother.
And Snakes. not all are good swimers. Some yes. Rattle Snakes and many more, not good swimmers. you go on with basic knowledge but you have not a clue to what your saying about Salamanders/newts. Go buy a Tiger or a Fire salamander and put it in a fully aquatic tank (as an adult) and tell me how long it lives or how much it trys to climb out of the tank. As for redbacked salamanders. they dont even enter the water, they give live birth. (their also bad swimmers too)
actually, yeah. even rattlers when put in a pond have no problem getting to the other side. that qualifies them as being good swimmers. also, yeah. i have owned newts for years and have had 2 tiger sals for over a year and have spent hours reading about the tiger sals. sure they will try to get out of the water if it is deep, and a fully aquatic tank would kill it, but they dont exactly need a lot of space to move around, so by the looks of it, this guy's setup is adequate, but i would.....
....i would strongly suggest movin him to a 10 gal with about 2 inches of eco earth, a waterdish big enough for him to fit in, and a hide. thats all they need. and by definition, newts definitely dont scavenge---nor do ANY amphibians scavenge. almost every species uses either vision or vibration to find prey, so anything not moving they consider inanimate. redbacks are the same story. they could swim around just fine, but would drown eventually in a fully aquatic setup. also, .....
no the tank isnt adequate, theres way to many species being mixed here. You need to read about amphibians and reptiles, not just tiger salamanders.yes newts are scavengers/ hunters.Tell me this. why do newts eat sinking food pellets when they dont move and fall in between rocks?they use their sense of smell.dont tell me they cant smell under water because they can.dead small fish, and other amphibian eggs,do not move so they rely on their sense of smell to find these food items hence SCAVENGING!
Green Guy:You said anything not moving is considered inanimate.again why do they eat pellets that dont move and sink. They use smell and vibrations also to find food.Aquatic Newts are always poking around in the rocks to find food.if it smells good to them, they will find it.
I know all of this because i breed several species of newts salamanders and frogs and sell them at reptile shows.plus im in school to become a herpetologist/biologist.
Yes any salamander can swim for short distances to get to the other side, thats it.
You also said that if a salamander can swim to the other side, it qualifies them as good swimmers. thats a load of crap. a good swimmer can submerge itself and swim around with out being stressed out. i can swim to the other side of the pool, but im horible at holding my breath and im a very slow swimmer, hence im a bad swimmer. green guy. please stop acting like you know what you are talking about
actually i really do know what im talking about. you are kinda just exaggerating what i say. like, when i said sals are good swimmers, you were like "oh, well put em in a tank with no land and see what happens" actually, i keep mine in a tank with mostly land, and then water and they go in the water and swim around a bit all the time, even though the substrate is perfectly moistened. also, newts RARELY eat pellets--ever. let alone ones between rocks. mine actually dont eat anything that doesnt..
...move. dude, you going to school and breeding for shows has nothing to do with anything either. i breed pythons and am only a freshman in high school, so the college thing isnt exactly an option right now, but it wouldnt matter anyway. the world's best herpetologists often never went to college for anything.
again, i already said his species mixture isnt good, but that the setup is adequate for tiger sals, especially if it has more turtle docks like he said. im seriously done though because
I know it is suggested to keep most newt/frog/salamander species by themselves; however, I've kept newts/clawed frogs together for years with no problems.
Nice setup for fish and newt, but that Tiger Salamander should not be in there. It's a beautiful specimen, however, at that stage in life, they are no where near water.
