Essentially, the problem with healthcare in the States is that it's considered more of a business than a social service. The focus should be on people, not profit margins.

Personally, I think that if everyone in the US quit going to the doctor for a runny nose, there wouldn't be as big of an issue. Some things should be covered by the government, I agree; terminal things like cancer or AIDS or anything you're going to have to live with for the rest of your life. But other things should be paid by private insurance.

When I referred to Canada's healthcare system as "superior," I did so because the central aim is to provide basic coverage for everyone, regardless of how much money they have. Our healthcare certainly isn't the best, but at least I can go to sleep at night not worrying about how I might afford my university tuition if I have a serious injury or debilitating illness that requires expensive treatment.

Yes. in Canada there are waiting lists for treatments, but surely you do not believe that for critical health issues, people have to wait? @branchbros Oh no, I didn't say that Canada's healthcare system is better than everyone else's, I just meant that it's better than in the U.S. What America should strive for in terms of an ideal healthcare system could be the National Health Service (NHS) in the U.K., or any sort of healthcare found in Scandinavia. Essentially, the problem with healthcare in the States is that it's considered more of a business than a social service. The focus should be on people, not profit margins.

Personally, I think that if everyone in the US quit going to the doctor for a runny nose, there wouldn't be as big of an issue. Some things should be covered by the government, I agree; terminal things like cancer or AIDS or anything you're going to have to live with for the rest of your life. But other things should be paid by private insurance.

When I referred to Canada's healthcare system as "superior," I did so because the central aim is to provide basic coverage for everyone, regardless of how much money they have. Our healthcare certainly isn't the best, but at least I can go to sleep at night not worrying about how I might afford my university tuition if I have a serious injury or debilitating illness that requires expensive treatment.

Yes. in Canada there are waiting lists for treatments, but surely you do not believe that for critical health issues, people have to wait? Things like a hip replacement go on waiting lists, but crucial surgery necessary to keep someone alive happens straight away.

Bill Clinton was riding the economic wave created by the Reagan tax cuts. The best thing he did while in office was that he did nothing to change that. He did allow the dems to change things like relaxing the conditions for obtaining fha home loans that helped lead up to the housing fiasco that dramatically escelated the recession we are in now.
