I know exactly how this film went behind the scenes. Jeremy Irons was doing his acting thing and the director kept saying "more I need more!"

Irons tries again, then the director says "MORE, MORE, too subtle!"

So Irons tries again, and the director still says "more!"

So Irons eventually gave up and said "oh, you want more? I'll give more, motherfucker! LET THEIR BLOOD RAIN FROM THE SKKKKKKKYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!­!!!!!!!"

I think evil wizards at climactic finales tend to "overact", as that is a style that has often worked for stock villains like this. That said, I think Jeremy Irons did a much better job in ERAGON, and even that film wasn't so stellar. Scar from THE LION KING is probably his best role.
