  • Simply the best black metal song ever, dark and emotional... Hellhammer was already an untochable beast drummer in his youth, the combinations of blast beats with hi-hat and ride are fantastics... The drums on DMDS are amazingly progressive...

  • darkness will show us the way...!

    atte. 13...

  • 0:00 to 0:10

    best music ever

  • I love black metal bands like Mayhem, Sargeist, Burzum, Nokturnal Mortum, and Drudkh but I also love hip-hop music like Bone Thugs N Harmony, Brotha Lynch Hung, Eazy-E and Nate Dogg. Its good to listen to diff genres of music.

  • @SethMetal12345 damn straight. I can listen to Mayhem and right after listen to Willie Nelson. You need differences in life.

  • who was the vocalist in this album?

  • @MrKschuldiner Dead.

  • @NoisecoreSource Actually no. By the time the recording began, Dead was already dead (no pun intended). He is credited for most of the lyrics, however the vocals were all handled by Attila Csihar, his replacement.

  • @isaacelfman I realized that after I typed it and submitted it. Yay for misinformation.

  • @NoisecoreSource Dude, Attila Csihar performed vocals on this album.

  • the vocals on this album are so much better than deathcrush.

  • that intro is coming straight from the depths of hell

  • @Expl88

i was going to say the exact same thing haha. hail mayhem! \m/

  • @amon1995amarth hail! \m/

  • TwT

  • @DaxtonVillon They were indeed a thrash metal band (the greatest of all time in my opinion), but they were among the bands such as Celtic Frost, Bathory and Hellhammer who inspired the earliest incarnation of black metal. If you check out the riffing on the first couple of albums, you'll see where Mayhem, Darkthrone and Burzum got their influence from.

  • ever mayhem mothers fuckerSS !

  • No matter how monumental this album was, I have heard better since. You guys should check out the likes of Angantyr and Infernal War, if you haven't already. One thing that puzzles me is that I've heard people say that it was Euronymous who pioneered the black metal riffing style. All I can say is listen to early Sodom \m/

  • @TheJaypalm Listen to Bathory. That's where this guitar playing game from.

  • Mayhem with Dead is true Mayhem

  • @MissJeanette69 Fuck off already

  • @MissJeanette69 And Euronymous.

  • This is fucking TNBM.! \m/

  • The fear that this bestows upon you... That fear... turns into excitement...!!!

  • I HAVE 2 WORDS TO SAY:

    HAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIL DAAAAAAAAARRRRKKK

  • This is fuckin' essence of black metal.

  • just listened to this on my record player with the lights in my room of. think i shit my pants as soon as 0:03

  • Darkness will show us the way here is no peace.

  • Wweeeelllcoooommme!

  • it's so fucking daaaark....!!

  • Comment removed

  • dude everyone needs to look up the history of this band and its members on wikipedia. thats some fucked up shit

  • @greenbeaner69 The entire scene is messed up. Murder, suicide, church burnings...

  • AS SEEN ON FAILS? WHAT THE FUCK

  • welcome to hell...

  • Mayhem forever

  • the main riff is the most chilling and, in black metal, classic riff ever. amazing and timeless. i still get chills listening to this song! timeless masterpiece! too bad they didn´t blow up the Nidaros cathedral as was planned, along with the release! this mainly because the guitarist/songwriter Euronymous was murdered by the band´s bassist!

  • You should get that shit published its so long.

  • @0SierraMaestra0 this guy is fuckin brilliant. I never read so much stuff on a youtube video in my life.

  • Thank you, MrCheeseball98 Sir; If you think my foolhardy yammering is long winded and "fuckin brilliant", then you should see what I have done with two guitars, one synthesizer, some recording equipment, a drum-machine, and countless years worth of time. I always need more subscribers, after all...THE EGO DEMANDETH! My latest Piece: "band" (just me)-URZA, album-"The Blood Opera", Song-"The Beheading of Lord Izmir", my first and only attempt at playing BlackMetal on a synthesizer. 2012 in 7min!

  • @0SierraMaestra0 And Burzum is good.

  • HELLZ YEAH listening to satanic music on Christmas Eve! \m/

  • @Zyborggian haha

  • @Zyborggian i used to listen to metal also...this shit sounds fucking horrible the same background music doesn't change to the voices at all they play the same shit the entire time and it gets annoyingly repetitive

  • @Zyborggian THERE IS NOTHING SATANIC about Black Metal; don't be a dummy. DO YOU KNOW YOUR HISTORY? Satanism and Black Metal were made synonyms when Varg "count smelly Nazi" Vikenes decided that he would have a happier life if he went to a luxury Norwegian Prison after burning some churches, and then some annoying British DM bands decided to call themselves Black Metal. Gorgoroth=real black metal+real satanism. No mention of accepting Catholic theism (NEEDED FOR SATANISM!) here. (more->)

  • (page 2) Also xMas is the most Anti-Christian holliday out there: once upon a time there was a magical dude with long hair who said "look guys money is evil; God is love; never hurt living things (ever ever ever); if you love some people they will likely hate you, but do it anyways; he of you who is without...ect". And now we stand around an inflatable giant red doll made of petrochemicals and wasteful power use; then we give our children MW3? What? Jesus was born during summer. IT'S SOLSTICE!!!

  • (page 3) Two other things: even though Gorgoroth (great band) is wholly statistic in their lyrics, Gaul's theological world view seems more like Pantheistic Hollism, at least from a documentary about him I once saw. #2 is I saw you mention in one of your other comments the phenom on not liking BM at all the first few times. Right on; black metal is a lot like beebop, opera, or some forms of chamber music in that respect. Though I had to rant, I feel what cho' sayin.

  • @0SierraMaestra0 Dude chill the fuck out its at least antichristian

  • @Zyborggian no doubt...no doubt...but so is Christmas; obviously in a wholly different way. I live in Utah where there are a lot of Mormons. I have nothing against them, but one thing that is typical of the LDS is declaring anything that is disliked to be SATANISM WAAA!! If your parents don't spend enough time with you or they mock you incessantly, yes it may be abusive, but it's not a "satanic abuse ritual", and your parents wouldn't be Satanists. I hear it a lot, so it's a peeve of sorts.

  • @Zyborggian we have a badass over here

  • @Zyborggian So? Christmas eve is just the celebration of the Winter solstice

  • @Zyborggian Hell yeaaaa

  • sounds like shit

  • @wickedjuggaloMH I used to think the same thing about black metal.... now I find this kind of music incredibly inspirational XD

  • Seig Heil

  • @thevideoclipful fuck off nazi scum

  • @thevideoclipful haha, learn to spelll first

  • Fucking legendary!!! This is a fucking masterpiece. This song always drives me fucking nuts. The vocals, the guitars, bass and drumming!!!! Perfection. Hail fucking MayheM \m/

  • una obra maestra... nada mas!

  • This is fucking awesome.

  • Does not need long comments! Masterpiece.

  • Best early 90´s underground black metal unholy masterpieces were Mayhem ´De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas´, Emperor In the nightside eclipse, Rotting Christ Thy Mighty Contract, Satyricon- Dark Medieval Times, Mystifier- Goetia,Darkthrone- Under a funeral moon.

  • the song is a masterpiece and so is the album. very dark, very infernal, it has specific uniqueness about it. much of which i personally think comes from what was actually going on in the band during the time. Hail The True Mayhem!

    Ave Satana!

  • @arkanfel666 The band has never become stale in sound, always developing and evolving into something just that little bit more different and innovative than anything else.

  • @MorkaGraven no it hasnt ofcourse. i was only talking about this album doesnt mean the rest are stale. there is only one mayhem

  • Sounds like they got Palpatine on vocals. That's how you know a band is evil.

  • One of the most influential black metal albums from scandinavia ........

A legendery album in fact ......Very grim ......Original feel of true darkness.....

  • @jaylasen1 Some even argue that Mayhem created Black Metal. But they certainly set the standard for excellent Black Metal, when they released this album. I think it is to0 bad that Varg Vikenis is an awful Nazi scum bag: Oystein Aarseth would have gone on to make more great music, and Varg's bass on this album is the best of his work. Burzum is hit and miss, but I don't listen to it...Nazi made waste of time...It's all about Mysticism, Arkanum, Gorgoroth, and Mayhem!

  • @0SierraMaestra0 So what if Varg Vikernes is Nazi? He` great artist; and despite all popular descriptions of Nazism; it is simply spiritual willpower; and the will/desire to fulfill a destiny which regardless of possible origin must be obtained, asis the inclination (evolution) of all the living creatures; Burzum & Wagner are the music of Gods and heroes;Hitler, Heydrich, Vikernes, Wagner, Nietzsche;they all make new stretches into the cosmic ether and are (apparently) hated for it & called Nazi

  • @Godenschemering7 I am a bit confused: you seem to bring a pair of contradictory lines of argument. The first being the rhetorical question and its answer, which seems, frankly, stupid: why does it matter that he is a National Socialist? Well because fear based imaginary ungrounded racial mythologies to justify auto and kleptocratic State Capitalism are awful. Your second point seems to ratify the validity of the use of the word myth, as you call Adolf Hitler a "God...and [or] hero".continue

  • (Page 2) Adolf Hitler wasn't a god or a hero; he was a man who was very good at appearing enraged at threats to the German economy and conservative social identity; he terrorized endless ordinary men, women, and children, began one of the most violent wars in history, suffered from psycho-sexual disorders, and ultimately shot himself in the face while hiding beneath Berlin. Hitler was also a scary Catholic who loved a non-biblical fake Jesus made of fear and racial myth. MO->

  • (Page 3) "The Dead Kennedys" only wrote one song that I am willing to listen to...it applies here. Think about the audience that is going to read your words: 99% of them have "Nazi Punks! Nazi Punks!..." running on repeat through their heads any time you begin to call Hitler a god. Also, according to thee, the "Gods and heroes" must like music that requires only the pathetic scraps of what musical talent has to offer. God mostly listens to Rachmaninoff, Leonard Cohen, and Ulver, don't you know?

  • ...But not Burzum...never Burzum; Burzum is a shitty one man prison based low talent synth pop "band" that used to play hit and miss Black Metal...but mostly miss when not playing a song with Darkthrone called "Vatican in Flames!!!" (that was page 4, the last page, by the way) PS Happy New Years: 2012 in 52 min!!!!!!

  • @Godenschemering7 Race is not a biological fact...just in case no one told you. See we have these folks called Biologists, yeah...some of which specialize in genetics. Skin color is frankly an arbitrary dominant\recessive trait. Many "black" people have mostly "white" ancestors and visa versa. If National Socialist economics and not their race-myth exemplifies "evolution" then human "evolution", in this case, is self facilitated ecological suicide..with lots o Panzer induced pain along the way!

  • @0SierraMaestra0 Skin colour? It has nothing to do with it ..."black" or "white" blacks haven`t got FYA gene; a reasoning component and bare more resemblance to ape skull-shapes...but it is not my point, I am not racist, however Germanic kind is the most exceeded from the primordial specimen of nature`s design insofar, everything has leadup to this end, although "Nazism'' in truth, is a matter of spirituality.

  • @Godenschemering7 Look, you are engaged in the same fallacious logic-type as before when begging why it matters that one is a Nazi, if their music is good, then going on to explain how Nazism is a good thing. Here you say you are not a racist, then you go on to argue ungrounded frankly truth-less racial myths. Sorry but you do not need to be arguing for segregation or likewise crimes to be a racist or to say racist things like "Germanic Kind" is the highest form of evolution-->

  • (page 2) Your argument is characterized by a plethora of misnomers: you treat racial myth as spirituality, which is no more spiritual than is the belief that the "free-market" will solve our problems with out fail; just because some thing is grounded in faith does not make it spiritual. And political hierarchy is antithetical to individual spirituality, regardless. Secondarily you don't seem to see that skull comparisons are nonsensical excuses for race-hate, and that "Germanic" is only culture.

  • haha 1:20 he starts 2 yawn

  • @mtmike09 xDD

  • @MrUnicornslaughter The "depth" comes from the songwriting, not how technical it is. Sure, maybe when I was 14 or 15 I was more concerned with technicality than songwriting, but not anymore. So, no, this album does not "fail". It was a monumental release which has influenced countless black metal AND death metal artists and still does today.

  • @aarongtr180 I completely agree with what you are saying, but I always grouped good instrumental song writing in with technicality and only lyrical song writing in with depth. It is the same concept, but I consider this to be very sophisticated song writing instrumentally and thus very technical--the playing is also amazingly demanding (in case you haven't preformed Black Metal before). These are good lyrics for Black Metal, but I frankly wouldn't mind if it was a wordless chant...still 'd be +.

  • @MrUnicornslaughter Agree the vocals are a shamefulle way of honouring Dead`s lyrics, but this music isn`t supposed to be like normal "metal" there are too many other influences; Euronymous said they painted landscapes with sound .. it is a straight-forward description of minimalist aesthetic...and I am not a guitarist or know about them very much, but the solo on Freezing Moon sounds very good to me as well....goofing up the source with many analyzations would ruin it because it is for mystery

  • @Godenschemering7 Naw man...I understand it is solely a matter of taste, so don't think I'm trying to be snarky or all self righteous, but from a completely subjective stand point, Attila is so much better than Dead: one Dead never had a chance to shine on a good record or any studio record for that matter; two his vocals are just high quality typical at best. Attila, however, uses both a Monk-like chant and a scratchy howl. Lots of BM vocals are just boring to me, thisNOWAYlandscapes with sound

  • @0SierraMaestra0 Atilla`s best remains Tormentor; have you heard the 'Live in Leipzig' performance with Dead...track: "Funeral Fog"? --the second time he sings the line "...only dead trees are growing here..." is perhaps the best vocal performace immemorial...and not only that; but Dead`s personality as a performer was so entirely dedicated, it is impressive....but I should not dismiss atilla`s singing on this album either;I just long to hear wha it would be with Dead his last words (the lyrics)

  • @Godenschemering7 Oh yes, "Live in Leipzig" is one of the better albums. Most people I know can't stand the poor audio live Mayhem, but I can, very easily. Dead's personality is a little better described as mentally ill and suicidal, but that could be synonymous with dedication, I guess? And I agree about Tormentor, one of the elite Black Metal bands. There are three kinds of Black Metal: good Black Metal, bad Black Metal, and Death Metal, Tormentor certainly exemplifying the former-most.

  • @0SierraMaestra0 Also I never heard Varg Vikernes say he was a Nazi? I think he`s simply a Germanicist/nordicist...and doesn`t desire the harm to befall other races, inferior or otherwise (I do remember hearing him say something like that in an interview, but never that he was a Nazi despite his middle name "Qisling'' and professed relation to Vidkun Quisling, Fuehrer of the Nasjonal Samling in Norway

  • @Godenschemering7 Frankly, Nationalism is in and off its self wholly awful. Nation-states are constructed to facilitate the translation of fixed or ecological services to limited productive (commodity based) services designed to maximize the wealth of stratified reaches society. At a time in which the species is on the brink of macro-sucide, the distractions caused by ANY ethno-racial mythology are analogous to the opium that lets a bleed man go unbandaged. Hate is just a Prison. Happy NEW YEAR!

  • UFF TEMAZO!!!

  • Varg Vikernes is my homeboy.

  • Damn I wish the recording quality of the majority of black metal albums was better that-way I would like BM a lot more. BM is awesome by far my favorite genera of metal.

  • Pourquoi il parle le débile là ?

*Cool song ! I don't usually like Mayhem but this sounds so cool ! :D

  • Probably the best Mayhem song ever wrriten. The song is so dark, the vocals just make it so evil, and the lyrics just make it complete. I think this is the best song with Attila on vocals, Especially The part 1:16 to 2:02 and the other vocals like that make the songs atmosphere pop out.

  • With the lyrics the listening became darker and more adequated and if any diehard Mayhem supporter could translate the latin lyrics into english ones that darkness would be brighter and clearer...AVE old MAYHEM!!!!!!

  • My budgie loves this :D

  • Lo único mensaje que comprendo es que maten niños y que bebamos su sangre muajaja esta genial la canción yeah 666

  • attila's vocals creep me the fuck out. <3

  • Today I made a vocal cover of this song, but in "Dead version". Check it out if you can't handle Attila's vocals

  • Sounds like Chewbacca taking a shit.

  • This shit should be used to meditate on and draw up the dark spirits it was meant to evoke. This is not music. This is ritual!

    Hail SAtan

  • Attila es el mejor

  • I just went out and bought this album today! Fuckin' love it. <3

  • there was a video over 130k views of this song, but wmg took it down wtf

  • Fuck yeah Varg should have got credit for the awesome bass in this.

  • @SeanSayyss He would have done, but I believe if he was credited on the album, Aarseth's family would have tried to block the release.

  • BEST Black Metal album \m/

  • @chaclapa Best? Maybe. Genre defining? Definitely YES!

  • @chaclapa best, nope, but definetely marks one sound that black metal missed that time, OBSCURITY!

  • @allkike OBSCURITY is the word !!!

  • The true Black metal.

  • Holy shit what an history... i just wiki Mayhem and well... the name of the bands fits perfectly.

  • After Grishnackh murdered Euronymous, the latter's mother requested that Hellhammer get someone else to re-record the bass tracks. Hellhammer said he would do them himself, but since he can't play bass he simply lowered the volume on Varg's bass. You can still hear it fairly clearly though.

  • This is a song that is great being that is shows Atilla's vocal range a bit

  • @ poorsod fucking troll

  • @poorsod2 fucking fag

  • well there are a lot of fights in internet about who is better, but actually Attila did the great job, vocals of the best Mayhem's album ever made belongs to him, exactly to him. He rocks, and his unique vocal style just fucking pwn all other black metal vocals of his time.

  • This album along with emperors nightside eclipse and all of darkthrone is what black metal is about

  • @poorsod2 only shit, stupid or a crap thing here is you

  • it's not this kind of music that makes me want to kill, it's that justin biever shit!!

  • fucking masterpiece.

! ! Support The True Mayhem

  • ASKING ALEXANDRIA IS BETTER

  • @Spade21X dude, shut the fuck up. You CAN'T compare Asking Alexandria to fucking Mayhem. That's like comparing Children Of Bodom to AC/DC. It makes no fucking sense. They come from completely different points.

  • @tannerhuotari Because of this thing called "musical talent"

  • There`s part of the lyric missing... "bring us the goat"

  • i u listen to black metal for dark atmosphere and the drumming

  • I think this album has the perfect balance between good and bad production

  • the only song I like from attila. i prefer dead. but i like this because of the evilness. btw, maniac is awesome. period.

  • one of the best songs ever . . . i miss the old times

  • this was their best album, it all came together in 1994 though it started with Dead & Euronymous years ago that was the best Mayhem line up

  • best song ever.. period

    mayhem died with euronymous

  • Fucking brutal man!

  • fuckin A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mayhem is playing Los Angeles november 7th :D:D:D:D:D::D

    cant fucking wait

  • @shogott where at? I know about the Santa Ana show on November 26.

  • I know I'm probably a poser for saying this but I wish a lot of these Black Metal classics would get rerecorded properly. I find nothing awesome about shit production.

  • @ih8makinusernames it might be a matter of taste too, but for me it just sound like, it has more soul on it with this kind of production, albums with really high productionn sounds like plastic to me, if you know, what i mean

  • @ih8makinusernames This is actually very high quality production for black metal standards.

  • @psudeoaccount But shit by normal standards.

  • @ih8makinusernames Black metal sounds better this way. It'd lose some of its "cold" sound if it had crystalline production.

  • Which vocalist is this? Dead or Attila?

  • @3baxcb Attila

  • Comment removed

  • @3baxcb Dead

  • @erasmusfry98 no its Attila

  • @3baxcb noob

  • @Kauraveli That's a term for gamers.

  • damn i have this on cd i love it i a listen to deathcrush almost daily, but when i bought this album holy hell mayhem is so fucking good. anyone stoked to hear that they are returning to play live wacken this summer.

  • best band on earth

  • Can someone translate the Latin for me? (Google translate is not what I mean)

  • @DarthKrattus

    The mystery of Satan

  • @minesweeper1975 Firstly, the title translates to "Of Lord Satan's Mysteries," so you already have lost all your credibility to me. Secondly, I wasn't referring to the title; I was referring to the lyrics in the song.

  • @DarthKrattus

pfffffft 26 years of listening to metal and I've lost someone's credibility.......oh woe is me D:

    Thought I was helping buddy

  • \m/(-_-)\m/

  • operatic

  • YES
