The skyscraper, named "Taipei 101", was under construction when an earthquake occurred on 31 March 2002. The quake caused 2 cranes to topple from the 56th floor. 5 people died.
@bestamerica well, why build any buildings if we put it that way? ... size don't matter, just the structure and stability of the building... the fact that this building still stands besides it's size proves the point
And just for the record, my city was struck by a devastating earthquake about 50 years ago, and it was torn to pieces, but many of the tallest modern buildings of that time survived and still stand today (even after several small earthquakes)
I was in Taipei when that happened. I was teaching english back in 2002 and I remember hearing about it the next day in school. It was a strong earthquake - I think it was about 6.5 (don't quote me). Luckily I was in a park during, prob best place to be at the time....
Wow I never knew this happened during construction. A crane in San Francisco fell off of a skyscraper just 2 or 3 weeks after the 89 quake. It's sad because it landed on the cars below in traffic. People died. My brother was working downtown and told me how loud it was. They blamed marijuana because he had a high dose of it in his system (the crane operator) who didn't bolt down the crane and it fell over. It's the first time I heard marijuana was the cause of death. But im sure it happens
@101andrewj have you everheard ov the wind damper inside it? i have been there, seen it move, the building is fine during the earthquakes, the wind damper keeps it still. that was during constructian, it is pretty sturdy now.
The fact that they were still buliding it. Is what shocked me. If it survived that it should be able to stand even through the big ones.

Funny how that building didn't fall into a neat, tiny pile of rubble like WTC 1, 2 and 7.

@sanluisskywatch Yeah, funny how it didn't burn, get crashed into by jet airliners or has not been on fire for about 7 hours nonstop.

@sanluisskywatch - Yes, you are right, 9/11 was a conspiracy and you know all about it. Good, thank you.
