just started having this problem. i thought it was the graphics card because the whine was in tune with the graphics, just like in the utube clip. But it`s the PSU all the time with any 3D game like a shooter and even Empire Total war when I scroll around. I am going to buy a new psu as the old one was bought 2nd hand- won`t do that again.
Every time i see this kind of problem there is a nvidia card involved. I got the same psu difference is mine is 800w running 3x ATI 5770 and a core i7. My other rig is a corsair TX650 with a GTX295 and E3110 xeon and it squeals under load with ATI tool.
Its not an anomaly. This clearly obeys the first rule of computers "Its not broken its just not going to work" LoL had the same exact problem with my PSU and ATI Radeon HD 4850.
I have the same problem with the 600W one. I RMA'd it and the one they sent me (after 2 fucking months) had the same problem. They said I could either wait for another replacement or excange it for another one, but with lower price (65€), because they are assholes. The best one for that price was Cooler Master Real Power M550, hopefully I won't have problems with it. I'm waiting for it to be delivered.
The less powerful your graphics card is, the less likely you are to hear the noise. If you enable VSYNC on all your games, you may never hear the noise.
when Iam playing call of duty or dirt 2 or anything in particular , the buzzin/sqeeking/meowing sound occurs quite the whole time Iam playing these games...I found on forums that it is a normal thing , because the more juice the components in your computer need the more the psu outputs it, so I guess its not an issue of damaging your hardware , rather than just an issue of the annoying sound...
Righto. It is not dangerous to your system. Its simply a voltage regulator or coil/choke. They are audible the more power the PSU Outputs. My thermal take Evo 750 watt does the same thing altho i can barley hear it.
Hmm, i got a BZ 600 and i have the same Problem, when i scroll down on a fullsize picture on my 1680x1050 LCD then it makes bip bip and it makes really funny noises when i put on 3dmark or somthing like that.
my sparkle gtx275 with coolermaster real power m700watt squealed like pig.......so yesterday i bought evga gtx285 with corsair HX750watt no squeal at all, completely silent
same for me to, and i have changed graphics card from 8800 ultra to GTS 512 and i now have a HD4870 and the same thing. I have a Hiper 730 watts psu. So im going to try a Corsair PSU.
I've got an HD4870X2 and it has been pitching since I bought it (which is just over a year right now). I never really cared because I used headphones most of the time, but right now it's irritating the hell out of me. And I'm not too sure about the PSU, there are reports of different solutions.

That sound is coming from one the capacitors within the PSU thats close to failing, the reason it comes on only when you put stress on GPU is because its draws more current from your PSU thus making the noise. RMA your PSU
the only solution that i have read up on involves applying a non-toxic, non-conductive adhesive like nail polish or crazy glue to the source of the noise, google it. however i must stress that working within a power supply (even unplugged) is extremely dangerous and should only be attempted by someone with experience, not to mention it voids your warranty.
it's known as coil whine and it is caused due to a minor incompatibility between modern high wattage graphics cards and a wide spread of power supplies and is nothing to worry about. the sound is generated by vibrations from either an inductor coil not wound tightly or a capacitor. in many cases the sound is present but inaudible to the human ear. it is when it's within our range of hearing that it then becomes a nuisance. old CRT television's were notorious for this buzzing noise.
I have a Corsair 650w PSU and a HD 4870. There was no buzz at all.
I tested a new HD 4870 in my system, and the buzz was there. I replaced the card with my original 4870, and since the buzz has remained. I don't get how it wasn't there before, but is now, and it is indeed annoying. I would RMA the unit, but A), there's no guarentee I wont get sent the original back, and B) I'd be without a power supply for a week. Im gonna put up with it till I get the HD 5870..the PSU is defs making the sound
the primary capacitor of this unit is a TEAPO(taiwan) rated at 85 celsius. the second one is a SAMSON(?).no japanese caps=shit. believe me the whine is "normal".shiny outfit but inside no quality at all
I had a xbox original, very noisy fans and harddrive whine. The new Xbox 360 is also quite noisy, but the Playstation 3 is virtually silent. I prefer PC gaming though :) Lan party with my friend is more fun the console gaming.
i have same issue, with my thermaltake qfan 750w, i think its the gtx260 series causing strain on the PSU or coils to move, everyone has this issue who ownes a GTX,
its struggling to put out the power that is required(by your video card), simple fact is the power requirement of you pc combined with the video card is greater than the max output of that power supply
i have the eVGA Geforce 9600GT 512mb, and i have the Corsair TX650W power supply, and when playing FEAR 2, the whine is more like a high pitched noise, but ONLY in the main menu, in other games there's noise from the video card, but it's practically silent when my case of closed and from where i sit.
Yeah it's probably your coils bud. They vibrate under stress, it doesn't actually cause any problems (that I have read) except it's fucking annoying as hell. I'm using a cheap modular Raidmax with an i7 quad/Geforce 285 (very power consuming) and run a graphics demanding thing I get nasty squeals I'm returning it for a refund and getting a better model, I suggest you do the same. :P
Its possible that this could is some way be influencing the sound coming out of your speakers, however I would lean more towards bad power as the cause of that. You should get a good power conditioner from the likes of Furmann and then see if the problem persists.
Man was I glad when I saw this video. I have the Tagan BZ 800w version, it makes the same horrible squeal/buzzing sound when any graphic intensive app is running. The sound changes when the camera is moved in a game for instance. I've also noticed that vsync makes the noise go away. I just built this machine today and that sound is quite annoying. I've also googled around a bit and found a few threads about this on tagans own website.
hmmm I think you convinced me to stay with Antec haha. Buying a new pc. Read your review on the 850 at newegg. Wasn't thinking specfically about either of these psu's but I defintally don't want that sound when I'm using my pc. :o
Wrong. Antec Signature 850 would likely be the quietest one you will find. It is rare for a power supply NOT to do this, its just that most people don't notice it because they either have vsync on, or there games are not running at a super high framerate with vsync off.
And youtube has an irritating character cap...But to continue:
I haven't gone through the trouble to pinpoint it to my PSU (assumed it was GPU), but the sound is EXACTLY the same as yours for ATITool. It's interesting how different apps or views in games make different sounds.
The hardest part of finding a true solution to this problem is convincing people it's actually real. To most, the idea of sound coming from a circuit board is asinine. So thank you very much for this video. It'll help.
Glad I found this video. So many forums people say the same stupid things "Did you check your fans?" (even if you swear you have), "Are you sure it's not your monitor?", etc. Quite aggravating. The vsync solution worked for me, though I'd love to find a better one since this doesn't fix the problem in PS 4 or ATITool.
What's weird is when I first got my card I didn't have this problem. It only showed up about a week or two ago. Happened to change PSUs, and the problem didn't go away.
Indeed. It is very frustrating that people don't acknowledge this problem as being what it clearly is... THE POWER SUPPLY. NOT THE FANS, NOT THE GRAPHICS CARD (although there are cases where this noise could originate from the GPU itself) AND NOT THE MOTHERBOARD.
Hey in regards to your video the Zalman PSU I have, (600W silent) actually makes a whine/high pitch noise as well, although not as loud as you are getting, it actually only seems to occur when the computer is OFF. Even when I unplug the PSU completely or turn it off completely at the rear switch the noise continues for a little while and then stops. My PC seems to run fine but do you or neone know if I should be worried? thanks, ive found hard to find any info on the web.
i think capucitators ar discharging and making sound. It cams from two conducting plates moving. thers no problems. Ther is similar thing in OCZ PSUs and its no problem. Only problem is in ears
Hey yea thanks, I contacted the supplier I bought it from and he said it could also be the active PFC working. Its not too noticeable and definitely is not as loud as this video. Thanks for your input =) puts my mind to ease since I dont have to go through all the RMA annoyances =P cheers!
No, you are wrong. Purchase 100 of these and they will all do the same thing. Even different brands. They vary some in the amount of the noise depending on the manufacturer, but it is always there (albeit reduced).
i just picked up the Antec SG850 and i have to say, it is DEAD silent even under high loads. The MSRP of that thing is pricey, bit I paid 100 for mine brand new from craigslist(lucky me). I recommend that PSU to anyone who wants a quality, efficient, and reliable psu. Ebay probably got it brand new under 100 bucks
Like i posted on the video that's on this one response tab, i have a corsair 650tx and i also get this high pitch sound. The worst thing is it also goes through headphones. I already switched Graphics card and the sound continues.
This system is brand new, no more then 12 days in my hands. I don't know what to do, other then cry :(
Start crying now, because this is obviously a problem that power supply manufacturers are either unaware of or don't care about :( As i've said, my Antec Signature 850W is significantly better.
This is definitely not the reason. I can replicate this noise using an 8800 GT and a 620W power supply with a 50 amp 12V rail. The 8800 GT under full load cannot come close to stressing that power supply. Yet the noise still happens.
You're right though; it probably is "normal". Only because the hardware manufacturers are not interesting in fixing the problem.
Well my brand new Signature arrived, and guess what dudes, it makes the noises! (slightly less but makes them) despite being the worlds highest ranked PSU, and quite expensive too.
Cannot buy this problem away for any ammount of money! OMG *i kill myself*! lmao
Stress induced over reaction sorry. You're quite right, no turning toward my PC to say "STFU!" like with the Corsair, especially at normal frame rates, very close to dead silent.
Before I go...
I feel I should add for others, it doesn't appear to be an easily fixable issue - encasing the transfomer and coils in 250 centigrade electronics rubber has no effect. It's very! dangerous too. Someone on Corsair forum mentioned power mosfets made the noises, but blew it up before concluding.
My CorsairHX620-R2 Dragothic low detail when over 1Kfps it's makes insane noises (build: C2D 3Ghz, P5Q, 2GB, 1HDD) my HX620 R1 blew up my graphics port on 2 motherboards. I have some Tagan's that blew up some hard drives and burnt the headers on graphics cards. And my Antec PSU fried a whole computer, no part not rendered worthless. All of these were top rated. I just consider it bad luck, I made no build errors. Any make, they're all made by the same underpaid workers.
that thing is a death trap tagan uses low quality components and have some of the worst soldering on the pcb even vorse than 40 buck psu just check hardforum . com review of the 1300 watt model you will be scared to death to keep that thing plugged in after that
With vsync off your graphics card is doing more work because it doesn't need to wait for the screen to refresh before it works on another frame, so it draws more electricity. A 900W Power Supply shouldn't have any problem with an 8800GT though.
this problem is most likely caused by EMI(electro magnetic interference). If you open the psu up you may be able to single out the exact source of the noise. You could then use duck-tape to shield the component. Shielding for those kind of components is always shorted to ground. It could be a simple 2 second job.... I'm returning my psu with this exact problem tomorrow, but will be trying the method above tonight.
Wow I am having the exact same problem with my psu, guess i get to go buy a psu from a major brand, right now I have a rosewill 550w with a xfx 9600gt and when I enter a game etc. i get that high pitched squel, tried the v sync and the noise dropped dramatically but not completly, have you changed out your psu yet, and did it fix the issue?
Right now I have just purchased the Antec Signature 850W Power Supply. Its Fantastic. The noise is still there but significantly reduced. The Ultra X3 1000W Power supply I have used in my system for a while was significantly better as well. Get the Antec Signature 850W if you want the best of the best.
Thanks for the reply, I just got back from doing the exact same thing as you, removed the power supply and listened for the noise and i beleive that the noise is coming from the motherboard, it's an asus m2n-560 sli, really dissapointed since it's an asus but what can I do. It behaves the same as your power supply so im thinking it's one of the coils or components on the board, guess i know what im buying for christmas. Thanks for the help with the power supplies though.
i have a bz700 with a bfg 8800gt. I didn't have any problems in any games.. no noise. nothing. But then I overclocked my Q6600 from 2.4 to 3.2 and it immediately began to squeak just as shown in this video in all games... very strange..
I just put a Tagan BZ 700W power supply in my system with a GTX 280, and every time the system hits high framerates, I too get a high pitch squealing sound. Examples of places where I hear this are the Crysis menus, the ATI artifact scan tool, and the 3DMark06 pixel shader test. Turning on vertical sync (limiting to 60 fps) is a temporary workaround that fixes it. It is not a fan problem, its an electrical/inductor noise. Seems to be a common problem, Im going to RMA this thing >:[
I bought a Tagan 700w for my 4870x2 2 days ago.. and now the 6+2 PCI pin is faulty and they only provide one of those and i have to RMA this stupid PSU now :(... Sucks.
some hardware in the PSU is making that sound not the fan. it's crt monitors/tvs sometimes makes high frequinece sounds that only some people can here.
mina also sound like that and after a while in 3d mode it get very hot and start to smell like burned circuits.. and its not my hd4870, as my frames get higher the sound gets louder, plus i have bad 3d performance in crysis, i'm just getting 17 to 23 fps instead of 30-45 that i should be getting. mu psu is ace 620w. realy pain in the ass
I have the same problem! i have a 8600GT but my noise is different then yours. It only happens when The card goes into 3d when you load the game or the card starts working harder. Its a constant high pitch noise that i THINK is coming from my PSU, but yea, its weird.
Try putting a small object like a small screw driver into the fan & see if it makes the sound. If thats not it, open up your PSU & go on a 3D app & identify the prog.
Please read the previous comments. IT IS NOT THE FAN PEOPLE. This is a known issue by Tagan that was supposedly fixed with a new revision in February of this year. THIS IS NOT ANYTHING CLOSE TO FAN NOISE :) It is an internal component that is not up to par. Tagan does make very good power supplies generally, and I still recommend their products, this was just an unfortunate incompatibility.
that helps a lot to me.. i was suppose to buy the Tagan TG800-U88 BZ 800W Modular Power Supply regardless to the style and color but im convince..thanks 4 posting
That's so annoying ! Glad i didnt buy that one just yet and i was considering it !
Hope they get it fixed because it looks like a nice PSU.
My PSU has a loud fan under load.
Since i got some quality watercooling the loudest part in my system is the PSU. all 9 120 mm fans are carefully tuned for silence only to have the effect ruined by the PSU !
Whats a good psu that remains silent under full load? It has to power Q6600 @ 4Ghz, GTS SLI, pump, 10 fans, 3 hdd 1, dvd-rw combo, enz.

That's because when you play a game vsync must be activated. If you were to disable vsync, you would hear the noise during the game.

i have same issue, with my thermaltake qfan 750w, i think its the gtx260 series causing strain on the PSU or coils to move, everyone has this issue who ownes a GTX,
Habbibz91 2 years ago
its struggling to put out the power that is required(by your video card), simple fact is the power requirement of you pc combined with the video card is greater than the max output of that power supply
freeze1305 2 years ago
You could not be more wrong. That system was no where near 900Watts. Maybe a little over half of that. I have a watt meter.
BreathlessProduction 2 years ago
i have the eVGA Geforce 9600GT 512mb, and i have the Corsair TX650W power supply, and when playing FEAR 2, the whine is more like a high pitched noise, but ONLY in the main menu, in other games there's noise from the video card, but it's practically silent when my case of closed and from where i sit.

I have 1100 BZ and no problems there

omg, thats very loud
and i want to buy this power supply
i really hope i'll not hear such loud noises

its normal, ive done quite alot of research on this and it affects graphics cards and psu's but i suppose you know that by now :)
my 8800gt does this but is very quiet. it works flawlesly though...
BigCowz 2 years ago
Im having the same problem , and i cant fix it .
mkamachi 2 years ago
You can't fix it, get a new power supply. I recommend the Antec Signature 850W.
BreathlessProduction 2 years ago
mabie you should just get a new power supply. I use a NZXT 650W on my system, and it works fine for me!
ddggttff3 2 years ago
already got a new one. How many times do I have to say that.
BreathlessProduction 2 years ago
sorry, didn't read other post first.
ddggttff3 2 years ago
Yeah it's probably your coils bud. They vibrate under stress, it doesn't actually cause any problems (that I have read) except it's fucking annoying as hell. I'm using a cheap modular Raidmax with an i7 quad/Geforce 285 (very power consuming) and run a graphics demanding thing I get nasty squeals I'm returning it for a refund and getting a better model, I suggest you do the same. :P

It's the power that your grafix card is consuming from you psu
t1mmy13 2 years ago
That means nothing. The power supply should be able to handle the additional 100 Watts that the GPU will put out under load.
BreathlessProduction 2 years ago
you better keep all that stuff locked up cuz ima go steal it

TWJ8305 2 years ago
Hey, I'm experiencing the same annoying noise while I'm in the menu's of farcry2, when the gameplay starts it stops.
I'm also experiencing a bad case of static noise from my speakers while I'm just in windows.
Could the static sound be coming form the power supply too?
I'm running it with a xfx gtx260 black edition.
yoeri51 2 years ago
O yeah I'm also using the Tagan BZ-900
yoeri51 2 years ago
Its possible that this could is some way be influencing the sound coming out of your speakers, however I would lean more towards bad power as the cause of that. You should get a good power conditioner from the likes of Furmann and then see if the problem persists.
BreathlessProduction 2 years ago
Man was I glad when I saw this video. I have the Tagan BZ 800w version, it makes the same horrible squeal/buzzing sound when any graphic intensive app is running. The sound changes when the camera is moved in a game for instance. I've also noticed that vsync makes the noise go away. I just built this machine today and that sound is quite annoying. I've also googled around a bit and found a few threads about this on tagans own website.
P.s. running Geforce GTX285.

From what I've heard it should help to use a wire with ground connection if you know what I mean? Don't realy know the word for that in english...
MadsWest 2 years ago
hmmm I think you convinced me to stay with Antec haha. Buying a new pc. Read your review on the 850 at newegg. Wasn't thinking specfically about either of these psu's but I defintally don't want that sound when I'm using my pc. :o
spur18 2 years ago
Wrong. Antec Signature 850 would likely be the quietest one you will find. It is rare for a power supply NOT to do this, its just that most people don't notice it because they either have vsync on, or there games are not running at a super high framerate with vsync off.
BreathlessProduction 2 years ago
Did you ever find a fix or some way to compensate for this?
Homeless2 3 years ago
And youtube has an irritating character cap...But to continue:
I haven't gone through the trouble to pinpoint it to my PSU (assumed it was GPU), but the sound is EXACTLY the same as yours for ATITool. It's interesting how different apps or views in games make different sounds.
The hardest part of finding a true solution to this problem is convincing people it's actually real. To most, the idea of sound coming from a circuit board is asinine. So thank you very much for this video. It'll help.
tjbrownj 3 years ago
Glad you found it useful. Hopefully this will give a kick in the nuts to PSU manufacturers everywhere to fix the problem!
BreathlessProduction 3 years ago
Glad I found this video. So many forums people say the same stupid things "Did you check your fans?" (even if you swear you have), "Are you sure it's not your monitor?", etc. Quite aggravating. The vsync solution worked for me, though I'd love to find a better one since this doesn't fix the problem in PS 4 or ATITool.
What's weird is when I first got my card I didn't have this problem. It only showed up about a week or two ago. Happened to change PSUs, and the problem didn't go away.
tjbrownj 3 years ago
BreathlessProduction 3 years ago
Hey in regards to your video the Zalman PSU I have, (600W silent) actually makes a whine/high pitch noise as well, although not as loud as you are getting, it actually only seems to occur when the computer is OFF. Even when I unplug the PSU completely or turn it off completely at the rear switch the noise continues for a little while and then stops. My PC seems to run fine but do you or neone know if I should be worried? thanks, ive found hard to find any info on the web.
kage7785 3 years ago
i think capucitators ar discharging and making sound. It cams from two conducting plates moving. thers no problems. Ther is similar thing in OCZ PSUs and its no problem. Only problem is in ears
IronSoulLV 3 years ago
Hey yea thanks, I contacted the supplier I bought it from and he said it could also be the active PFC working. Its not too noticeable and definitely is not as loud as this video. Thanks for your input =) puts my mind to ease since I dont have to go through all the RMA annoyances =P cheers!
kage7785 3 years ago
Buy a new PSU...problem solved!
CRonaldoSLAUGHTER 3 years ago
No, you are wrong. Purchase 100 of these and they will all do the same thing. Even different brands. They vary some in the amount of the noise depending on the manufacturer, but it is always there (albeit reduced).

i just picked up the Antec SG850 and i have to say, it is DEAD silent even under high loads. The MSRP of that thing is pricey, bit I paid 100 for mine brand new from craigslist(lucky me). I recommend that PSU to anyone who wants a quality, efficient, and reliable psu. Ebay probably got it brand new under 100 bucks

This system is brand new, no more then 12 days in my hands. I don't know what to do, other then cry :(
DeathtoRaiden1 3 years ago
Start crying now, because this is obviously a problem that power supply manufacturers are either unaware of or don't care about :( As i've said, my Antec Signature 850W is significantly better.

zenniz1992 3 years ago
It does it on mine too, happens when you take all the power from it. I think it's normal
Paumonsu 3 years ago
This is definitely not the reason. I can replicate this noise using an 8800 GT and a 620W power supply with a 50 amp 12V rail. The 8800 GT under full load cannot come close to stressing that power supply. Yet the noise still happens.
You're right though; it probably is "normal". Only because the hardware manufacturers are not interesting in fixing the problem.
corb01772 3 years ago
In response to Paumonsu
corb01772 3 years ago
Well my brand new Signature arrived, and guess what dudes, it makes the noises! (slightly less but makes them) despite being the worlds highest ranked PSU, and quite expensive too.
Cannot buy this problem away for any ammount of money! OMG *i kill myself*! lmao
PurpleSoprano 3 years ago
Yea, it still makes them, but significantly reduced for me to where it isn't an issue.
BreathlessProduction 3 years ago
Stress induced over reaction sorry. You're quite right, no turning toward my PC to say "STFU!" like with the Corsair, especially at normal frame rates, very close to dead silent.
Before I go...
I feel I should add for others, it doesn't appear to be an easily fixable issue - encasing the transfomer and coils in 250 centigrade electronics rubber has no effect. It's very! dangerous too. Someone on Corsair forum mentioned power mosfets made the noises, but blew it up before concluding.
PurpleSoprano 3 years ago
I just linked a video of my own, it is exactly the same problem you had/are having.
corb01772 3 years ago
Hey, have any manufacturers disclosed why this happens? I invalidated my warranty cleaning dust, so I have no choice but repair it myself.
PurpleSoprano 3 years ago
any PSU can be faulty
My CorsairHX620-R2 Dragothic low detail when over 1Kfps it's makes insane noises (build: C2D 3Ghz, P5Q, 2GB, 1HDD) my HX620 R1 blew up my graphics port on 2 motherboards. I have some Tagan's that blew up some hard drives and burnt the headers on graphics cards. And my Antec PSU fried a whole computer, no part not rendered worthless. All of these were top rated. I just consider it bad luck, I made no build errors. Any make, they're all made by the same underpaid workers.
PurpleSoprano 3 years ago
that thing is a death trap tagan uses low quality components and have some of the worst soldering on the pcb even vorse than 40 buck psu just check hardforum . com review of the 1300 watt model you will be scared to death to keep that thing plugged in after that
siralexu 3 years ago
Hahaha, I hate those sounds that's cames from the power suplies!!!
"come on, come on" - Destroing the space bar.
Nice vid about the noise of your PSU!
figlie 3 years ago
With vsync off your graphics card is doing more work because it doesn't need to wait for the screen to refresh before it works on another frame, so it draws more electricity. A 900W Power Supply shouldn't have any problem with an 8800GT though.
singularity3 3 years ago
This is correct, but that should make the power supply squeal. Apparently, power supply manufacturers don't make PSU's with this in mind.
BreathlessProduction 3 years ago
it might be the fan, maybe try stopping the fan and see if that makes the noise?
SquirrelGasm 3 years ago
Goodness gracious.... ITS NOT THE FAN PEOPLE. NOT THE FAN!
BreathlessProduction 3 years ago
this problem is most likely caused by EMI(electro magnetic interference). If you open the psu up you may be able to single out the exact source of the noise. You could then use duck-tape to shield the component. Shielding for those kind of components is always shorted to ground. It could be a simple 2 second job.... I'm returning my psu with this exact problem tomorrow, but will be trying the method above tonight.
mcdoyoyo 3 years ago
After tell us if the method is secure to the PSU... lol!
figlie 3 years ago
Wow I am having the exact same problem with my psu, guess i get to go buy a psu from a major brand, right now I have a rosewill 550w with a xfx 9600gt and when I enter a game etc. i get that high pitched squel, tried the v sync and the noise dropped dramatically but not completly, have you changed out your psu yet, and did it fix the issue?
BurdenBound 3 years ago
Right now I have just purchased the Antec Signature 850W Power Supply. Its Fantastic. The noise is still there but significantly reduced. The Ultra X3 1000W Power supply I have used in my system for a while was significantly better as well. Get the Antec Signature 850W if you want the best of the best.
BreathlessProduction 3 years ago
Thanks for the reply, I just got back from doing the exact same thing as you, removed the power supply and listened for the noise and i beleive that the noise is coming from the motherboard, it's an asus m2n-560 sli, really dissapointed since it's an asus but what can I do. It behaves the same as your power supply so im thinking it's one of the coils or components on the board, guess i know what im buying for christmas. Thanks for the help with the power supplies though.

Seems to be a common problem, Im going to RMA this thing >:[

sam999333 3 years ago
Wattage has nothing to do with this. Your 8800GT may work just fine with a 300 watt power supply.
BreathlessProduction 3 years ago
I have the same problem! i have a 8600GT but my noise is different then yours. It only happens when The card goes into 3d when you load the game or the card starts working harder. Its a constant high pitch noise that i THINK is coming from my PSU, but yea, its weird.
castout85 3 years ago
Try putting a small object like a small screw driver into the fan & see if it makes the sound. If thats not it, open up your PSU & go on a 3D app & identify the prog.
ThatFlipKidxD 3 years ago
Please read the previous comments. IT IS NOT THE FAN PEOPLE. This is a known issue by Tagan that was supposedly fixed with a new revision in February of this year. THIS IS NOT ANYTHING CLOSE TO FAN NOISE :) It is an internal component that is not up to par. Tagan does make very good power supplies generally, and I still recommend their products, this was just an unfortunate incompatibility.
BreathlessProduction 3 years ago

Hope they get it fixed because it looks like a nice PSU.
My PSU has a loud fan under load.
Since i got some quality watercooling the loudest part in my system is the PSU. all 9 120 mm fans are carefully tuned for silence only to have the effect ruined by the PSU !
Whats a good psu that remains silent under full load? It has to power Q6600 @ 4Ghz, GTS SLI, pump, 10 fans, 3 hdd 1, dvd-rw combo, enz.
