@danger5199 The box was a gift, it can hold several thousand dollars worth if you include 2 sets of mallet tools in the bottom. Only once, I did a rough estimate...it was over $3,000.00 so I went and bought insurance from "Smith & Wesson". I have been buying & winning carving tools since I was 18-19 yrs. old. But the joy this box of tools holds is priceless to say the least. Please look at the video responses, you can build a smaller box that will suit your needs easily.
@midcitygym Thanks for commenting. Please be sure and check out the 2 video responses to this vid for more great variations to this box, like my carving buddies devised. ;)
@TheMessydate They are called palm handled carving gouges, more suited for smaller hand held carving. They are all different brands such as Swiss Made,Flexcut,Ramelson,Henry Taylor,Gil Drake.
I am thinking of beginning to carve, I dnt have alot of cash but dnt want to waste it on cheap tools, what is a reasonable brand to get started with and what tools are needed for a small starter kit!
@practicalbeing I always tell folks that Flexcut tools work well as they arrive sharp & ready to carve while not breaking the bank. Besides a knife,if I have a 1/4'' # 11 or a "U" gouge and a 1/4'' V-tool,I can do a lot of different projects. This is always a hard question for me as folks may want to carve bigger or different styles like relief carving. The one thing that holds true, try to always purchase the best you can afford, you get what you pay for in the end.
@allengoodman69 This was very helpful, I will be doing small projects so the small sizes will suit me I guess, I have seen the flex cut recommended often and I think that would be a wise choice. Sounds like a v-tool and "U" gouge in a size proportionate to the project would be useful tools, I already have a couple good knives for carving! Thanks for the reply : )
@allengoodman69 many thanks for the response, I will first check if I could get any from Switzerland - it would be cheaper in terms of mainland postage costs. Failing which, I will try plan "B".

Where can one buy very good tools in England? I would love some. Do you think specialist shops in the US have branch shops in Europe or take post orders. Please let me know as I have struggled to find good quality goods.
@rockart54 Im not quite sure as I do live in the states, but it looks like you could find a supplier who carries Swiss Made brand from Switzerland,in my opinion they are one of the best carving tools I have ever used. Woodcraft is a supplier of this and Flexcut brand tools,it might cost a little on the shipping but in the long run,you will have some great tools. Hope this helps & thanks for watchin !
@saxyguy1001 hahaha, thanks. I am going to do another video and break out the tape measure & go over it again to help folks who may want to build their own (this way,I can better help w/ the measurements). ; ) Until then, happy carvin' & thanks for watchin' !
Thanks for the great video. The plexiglass is a nice touch. This could be used for a number of other applications also, such as storing chisels - or any other sharp tool. Good job!
@tconrad1510 Thanks,I wish I could take all the credit, lol. The plexi has definately helped from getting all sliced to pieces reaching for a tool. Thanks for watching & commenting !
allen i love this tool box i was trying to understand the guys name you said built it , didn't catch his last name name though, is there a link to this guy or a way you can order this box from him i'd love to get ahold of one like this. thanks my friend and i hope all is well with you
@DADDIO630 Hey hey DADDIO,my friend who built the box is Steve Allen from Shelby,NC. He does not make these anymore,I guess you could say he retired again, lol. My advice is make friends w/ a good woodworker and have them build one that fits your needs,my box is overkill for a lot of folks, lol.
@allengoodman69 allen i sent you an email and a link to check out a toolbox project i've been working on based on your box , mine doesn't hold quite as many tools as yours but hey dare to dream right?!! lol thanks for all the video post my friend i've really enjoyed them have a good one and keep the chips a flying mt friend
@Dotmom16 A friend built me this box w/ just a little input from me,he no longer sells this box. The best thing I can think to tell you is to make friends w/ a woodworker and have them build one to your specs. Good luck in your quest & thanks for watchin' !
@allengoodman69 Thanks I never thought to sign or date my work.....Might order one of your carving knives when i get back to work, the one from hobby lobby needs sharpened every 2 minutes lol
@getsumofit Inferior knives that won't hold a good edge has ruined many aspiring carvers. I will be glad to help, just let me know. Happy carvin' & thanks again for your comments !
Thanks Allan you got me thinkin' about putting together a tool box. My problem is me the older I get the bigger the slob I'm becoming. Navy discipline is wearing off I suppose. Still as I add knives and chisels I need to get my act together.
Thanks John, you put your time in,youhave earned the right to be a slob, lol. This box really helped me to take care of my tools, never having to search for whatever tool I need.
Allen, how have those Drake tools been working out? I just received Gil's catalog and was wondering about quality and comfort. I'm looking for 7s through 11s (all under 1/2" sweeps) and hoping to buy them from a single maker. I've got about two dozen shallow sweep Dennys all larger than 1/2" that I use for my hogging and roughing work but his handles are too large for detail work, IMO. The others I've been checking out are Bud Murray's line and those Stubia #11 veiners (ala Marv.K).
Hey ritter89,the Drake's are awesome,Im slowly replacing ALOT of tools w/ them, they hold an edge and I find them comfortable and have the bonus of beautiful handles. Well worth the investment !!!
Sorry psych, for takin' so long to respond,Im thinkin' about re-visiting this tool box w/ another vid. in future,I can talk better than type~some may argue this...lol.
Nice job Al! Looks like one of those is going to be a project in the near future. I've been looking for some ideas and yours is alot better than the ones I've seen.

Thanks ! No hinged front is not necessary-I wanted more tool slots ! Tool spending=" I started figurin' one day, many moons ago and was in shock... w/ 2 sets of mallet tools in bottom, let me just say ...thousands ! Allen
holy cow dude how much did you spend on all that!!!
