Hey, quick question: What is Tim's exact religious stance? I know he mocks religion and doesn't believe in gods, but is he an atheist, or is he one of these anti-theist people? I really hope not, but obviously having never met the guy...
I mean, I see a lot of people commenting on his videos about how stupid religion is and stuff, as if it were their mission to debunk and destroy religion, but Tim seems like a really smart, decent bloke. Is he like that too?
@AGenericMoron Tim is an atheist who just happens to think that religion is not somehow "above criticism". I wouldn't say he's an antitheist persay, but he's also not going to accord respect to anyone who hasn't *earned* it. He has no problem covering so-called "controversial" topics, especially when those topics (like religion, evolution, etc) should *not* be controversial.
@jimmyRRpage the guy seems very intelligent and scientific. I'd say he's agnostic; but finds the idea of a god silly. (like most sane people). tim minchin f'ing rocks. Never thought i'd enjoy pianosongs and stuff. Damn his immense talent!
@PainSurgeon Tim Minchin is an atheist. He does not believe in a higher power or powers. Everyone alive is agnostic on the question of God's existence (regardless of what they say) because we don't know enough about the Cosmos to answer that question definitively yet. But that does not rule out a belief stance. Hence, Tim is an atheist.
@jimmyRRpage nice :D i wish i knew friends like tim minchin. my friends really are nonreligous, all of them , but only like one or 2 of them speak out against religion. Tim Minchin really is a voice of intelligence we need. And yes, it's logical this honor belongs to comedians, the ones who make us laugh at our misery, our fauilts, put them in perspective and deal with them without becoming illogally angry. Laughter is the one thing that humanity needs to learn psychological growth.
@jimmyRRpage did you seriously just say that evolution is a controversial topic comparable to religion? The only thing about evolution that is controversial is the intellect of the one who thinks it's anything less than a solid fact.
@gabberis Unfortunately, Evolution is controversial. Not because it's wrong (it most certainly isn't), nor because it lacks evidence (it's the most well-evidence fact/theory in all of science). It's controversial because, at least in the US, over 40% of people refuse to believe it and will do anything to get it kicked out of the science classroom.
He states that he is an atheist and a skeptic. In an interview he said,"“I’m trying not to rant on about religion too much because I think it’s f—ing boring, but there’s a couple of very specific things I want to say about that this year in terms of my obsession with people’s beliefs, and the way that regardless of how much knowledge we gain, we still seem to believe in nonsense,”
@AGenericMoron I get the impression that he dislikes religion and quite clearly doesn't believe in any of it. I don't see why that would change your opinion of him being as you said, "a really smart, decent bloke."
@InvisibleCivilian Well, you don't need to believe in religion to respect people's choices, even if you don't agree with them it's just common decency to treat people like people. Meanwhile, you see some people online (especially in YouTube comments) freaking out as if it were their mission to fight against religion, which really serves no purpose other than being self-centered and hateful. It's one thing to joke about something and another thing to hate that thing completely. Hence my question.
@AGenericMoron Look for the video titled "Tim Minchin Interview: Atheism, Comedy and Religiosity in America" Check that interview out. I think the last minute of it answers your question straight from the horse's mouth.
Also, in my opinion you're missing an important distinction. There is a difference between disliking certain beliefs (religion) and disliking the people who hold those beliefs (religious people).
@AGenericMoron Actually, one sort of DOES have to believe in a religion to "respect people's choices". Why should religious belief be exempt from criticism or riducule? If you believed Elvis was alive and granting you wishes, you'd be laughed at CONSTANTLY. Beliefs influence behavior and should be criticized.
While I respect your right to hold any foolish belief you choose, you must also respect my right to SAY whatever I want about that belief. The First Amendment protects BOTH rights.
@AGenericMoron I understand how many YouTubers, as you say, 'fight against religion'. But there are many theists who go around and attempt to convert other into their religion.
If there are still people in the world who attempt to convert others, then I think we are in a fair and reasonable position to 'tear them a new one', as Tim might say.
@AGenericMoron So you dislike antitheists? You don't consider them smart and decent? The very people who campaign to remove the yoke of religious oppression from all of us and you don't appreciate them?
I can't be bothered to dignify this with a rational response, because it is petty, spiteful bullshit. I'm sorry but if that's what you believe then I don't think you're living in the 21st Century, or even the 20th.
@AGenericMoron Hardly petty or spiteful when the proof is in the religiously based homophobia, xenophobia, misogyny and detriment to science, education and civil rights that religion proves itself to be EVERY SINGLE DAY.
The ONLY reason Christianity is nicer than it once was is because secularists, freethinkers, atheists and antitheists had forced it with reason and logic to behave.
@AGenericMoron You know he does not believe in gods, and need to ask if he is an atheist? You do know, that the definition of an atheist is someone who does not belive in gods, right?
@Myrdrahl ...Did you read what I asked? I'm not on about what he believes, but what he thinks about what others believe. You get a lot of people, especially on the internet, who believe that as an atheist it's their task to rid the world of religion, which I find rather spiteful and self-centered. You don't have to hate other people to be an atheist, or to see the humour in something.
But all in all I feel I've been answered by his recent song, Context. Can't seem to find it now, which is odd.
@AGenericMoron I think it is funny you ask while watching a video where MInchin states "arguably a lot of violance is caused by religion..." among other things. If we just for this argument consider Atheist a person that does not believe in god but is otherwise uninterested in the effect of religion and Antitheist as a person who thinks that religion is destructive and harmful then Minchin is obviously an Antitheist.
@AGenericMoron from my accumulated *almost stalker like* knowledge of Tim, he comes accross, above all, as a genuinely nice person.
despite the vast amount of material he does vis a vis religion, from what I've gathered, he is more against the inherently divisive nature of it than anything else and says in an interview: "When I'm being mean about religion, I'm being mean about where religion goes wrong. I'm not just being mean to people for having faith." and although he himself (continued...)
@rubbishrider861 doesn't believe in a god and thinks its silly, stating in "white wine in the sun" that he doesn't "believe just coz ideas are tenacious, it means that they're worthy" he also says:
"I've no problem with the spiritual beliefs of other fuckers, wile those beliefs don't impact on the happiness of others" in his "pope song"
@rubbishrider861 Two months and a small pile of abuse later, and I get a clean, straight answer from someone that actually tells me what I want to know! Your stalker-ness has helped at least one person today. Thank you!
@AGenericMoron glad to help:) sorry for such a long winded answer... I could go on forever quoting interviews and whatever else, bt yeah, i think in a nutshell, from wht I've seen, although he thinks its "nonsense", he seems to try to... I would say "respect" but... its more of a kind of...acceptence, (still for want of a better word) or a "live and let live" vis a vis other's beliefs.
@AGenericMoron I may be wrong, but that's how I interpret all I've read and seen and heard... the only way to get a truely accurate answer would be to ask tim personally of course but yeah:L haha
I see a lot of people whose mission is to practice and spread religion, but you seem like a really smart, decent bloke. Are you like that, too? I certainly hope not.
Oh Tim please dont play on the creationist propaganda. They dont get the joke, they actually think a fish suddenly just gave birth to a fish with legs. Creationism, as it happens, is the pinnacle of human stupidity.
Ooough! It's a shame . I'm not an english talker (I'm from Basque Country, North East of spain), so I can't understand ¿the half? (is it right or wrong?) of what he's is saying. Only a general idea (more or less). Too bad! He looks and sounds really funny.Great performer. Wouldn't you have this vídeo, but with subttitles? I don't care if the subttitles were in english, I'd work to traslate them. Thanks.

@abruemmer77 Yes, because quoting an entire section will grant you your self asteem that you are not the only one with a sense of humour laughing about a joke by a stand up comedian. Oh and learn to spell fucking.
@abruemmer77 Yes, avoid that which makes sense and actually damages your ego, and go pick on a Dutch person's spelling in a foreign language. Because hey; "I've got no other way to be cool on the internet."
I was referring to self censorship which is bloody ridiculous.
@ZeBlackCat: i didn't quote to make me feel "better" or something but to show what part of the video i enjoyed most. your comment doesn't bother me nor does it "damages my ego". i didn't even know you're dutch and i don't give a flying fuck if you are in the same amount you don't care i'm german. anyhow, good luck trying to piss people off with clueless commentaries about what you think is ridiculous...
I think the idea that radiation from exploding stars (cosmic rays) may have an influence on the mutations that drive evolution is one of the most exciting and beautiful, awesome ideas on the planet. So much more intricate and surprising than the simple, contradictory and boring fictions invented by organized religion.
