You know, I think that it sounds even worse being called heart poison. I mean, if they're going to mellow out the drug references, you're telling me they couldn't make it like Jolt Cola or something?
Heart Poison as a socially acceptable replacement is just FALE. Still, I have to admit that the thought of using it as a healing material just makes me think of that scene from Pulp Fiction where that one person OD'd on heroin or something and they stab them in the heart with steroid injection.
Real life heretic sect of the Cathari is the first thing I thought of, but it doesn't look like Catharism was widespread outside of Europe, afaik...
Then again, the city here's called "Grunoble" which sounds suspiciously like Grenoble, and the style of the houses looks different, too. I wonder if the game setting somehow jumped to faux-France. XD
The Japanese version is much more open about the religious nature of the plot (eg: "Christians" not "Clispens" or whatever they are saying in this version), and the "heartpoison" is actually "opiates". Apparently the protagonist uses all kinds of drugs, including peyote... no joke. Crazy JRPGs, gotta love 'em!

The Katari I think are the Byzantiun or Armenian Orthodox Church. Either that or Jacobites, nestorians or what not.
