  • Didnt the court settled a fine to Coldplay already? (Joe Satriani won this)..

And to this crappy vid.. Wtf??

I've been "copied" once myself (the intro of Circus - Lenny Kravitz), but I did by mistake give the rights of my song to the studio that recorded me (for free.. well for the song!), then this studio sold it to someone in Lenny's circle, and I heard my riff/intro on the radio)... I was just 13? when that happened, Im 32 (almost 33) now. Didnt receive a penny or invitation to a concert

  • Lol I wrote the main Riff to 'brighter than a thousand suns' by Iron maiden about a year or two before 'Matter of life and death ' came out I was like WHAAAAAAAA!?

  • coldplay are better'! joe's just jealous cause coldplay's bigger, they've conquerd the world and satriani haven't!

  • @WelshyBwoi you fucking retarded, im sorry, but its true

  • rip winehouse, pete doherty is a legend, and coldplay are eerrrmm... mmmm... errmmm.. im sure chris martins is a really nice guy... WHAT ?... o nevermind

  • VIVA LA DIVA ? QUE PORRA É ESSA?

  • Oh, please. First of all, coincidences occure all the time in a lot of songs. Secondly, "Viva la vida" was written BEFORE Joe released "If I could fly"... So fuck off, Coldplay has its song, and Joe has his, end of story.

By the way, Coldplay is the best band ever.

  • @ColdplayIsMyWorld yeah!! the best band ever! and the song was wirtten BEFORE joe released it!! and coldplay stole satriani´s song so they had to pay him a lot of money!! so strange!! lmao. BLIND.

  • @Dagobahere If you have any problem you should solve it yourself :D

  • @Dagobahere Except your incorrect on two things one Joe released that song in 2004 and two Creed is and will always be the greatest band to ever have been.

  • @ColdplayIsMyWorld ?? no it wasn't you retard. It's YEARS older . Do your research

  • There are so many songs with the same chord progression. There are limited number of chord progressions and everyone uses them.Nobody can copyright the chord progression Eflat,F,Aflat or whatever happens to be.You can find the same chord progressions in thousands of songs so...where is satriani's point?

  • @AtanasovPetar Same chords, same melody AND same tempo...

  • @EricClaptonFan24 I haven't heard both tunes because i don't like Joe Satriani or Coldplay. But i am just saying no one can have copytights on a chord progression.

  • this might seem off topic., but i'd really like to bang that british reporter chick...

  • viva la joe!!!!!!!

  • I hate Coldplay for that

  • Not to be racist but... Black people usually make better pop music. :D. No offense!

  • @marskii177 I'm sorry, but that is racist.

  • @PassTheSkittles meheh.... srry lol

  • joe satriani's song is better :)

  • @verbotenco Sry but ur a Retard hahaha ( Bealtes Deep purple Sex pistols queen rolling stones ETC) ??? HELLOU? WOFF..

  • @verbotenco DONT MAKE ME FUCKING LAUGH XD dont even try to say that america has a better music history! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL thats like saying britain has a better movie industry XD YOU STICK TO MOVIES WE'LL STICK TO MUSIC.

  • Are you fucking high? The majority of rock musicians that came out in the 60's and 70's were British.Beatles, Sabbath, the stones, deep purple, pink floyd, led zep and most of the punk bands. Take the bands you listen to today. Who do you think they're inspired by? Excactly. No wonder people think you guys are ignorant, you ARE.

  • @geitepung Who you talkin to? I am not even American, nor am I British either. I am Indonesian. We own the world now. You people in the UK and USA are struggling with unemployment, government debts, that you are begging for help from your govt. Meanwhile we are here making money every day from stock market, out of your pain, cause everyone in the West are flocking to Asia. Poor u, cause u are poor. And don't think everyone on YouTube is American or European. The world is larger than u think

  • I wouldn't know about that as I'm Norwegian. So I'm NOT poor, in fact I'm rather wealthy, propably wealthier than you if you absolutely want to get into that. The reason I thought you were American was simply because of your rather ignorant "American" statement regarding music.

  • @geitepung actually most of the 60s rock musicians were inspired by blues and jazz, which is from the US. Rock came from the US, and yes there was a 60s invasion of it as well. You are making a rather stupid argument. Its like an englishman arguing with an italian guy about which country had spaghetti first.

  • I'm not talking about the origin of rock, I'm talking about today's music and who most of those rock musicians are inspired by. The biggest rock bands back in the 60s and 70's were INDEED british. I don't care who they were inspired by because everyone's inspired by someone before them so that's irrelevant to me.

  • @geitepung

who do you think they were inspired by?

also led zep stole a shit load of songs from alot of famous american blues players look it up

  • You're not FUCKING LISTENING.

You clearly just wanna argue so you just jump into one between two others that's not only outdated, but you don't even know what we're talking about. And I know led zep stole a lot of shit and I know a lot of the british rock bands were inspired by the blues, but the fuck if they were american, they were african. Even the guitar itself is an african instrument, But it's fucking irrelevant cause it's got nothing to do with what we're talking about, so fuck off.

  • @geitepung its actually from a melting pot of music... you have gospel as the orginal american music, along with folk. Then you also have the latin american influence of music with the beat, and style. So its white black and latino. You really need to learn your music theory buddy before you go off spatting about everything.

  • @geitepung dude calm down you care way to much about this

  • It's not a matter of caring, but if you're first gonna engage in an argument, don't act like a disengaging brick wall that is only half listening to what the other person is saying.

Either way, this is a month behind me and I could care less about the subject at this point.

  • The Original tune that Coldplay stole was written by CAT STEVENS in 1973....Go listen people to the last 4 minutes of 'Foreigner Suite', its on YouTube under the title 'Heaven'...

  • @CurtisHalfHalf

Heaven is not close enough to Viva La Vida. Just because 2 songs sound similar doesn't mean it's plagiarism! If it was that way, we'd have 1M plagiarism cases yet unclaimed and a 1M more up & coming!

As for "If I Could Fly" by Satriani, they definitely plagiarized that one. Viva La Vida uses Exactly the same harmony, same groove, same hook, and for F's sake even the same tempo. That's pretty insane!!!

However, I don't believe they did it on purpose. But it's still plagiarism.

  • @Erotomaniax It certainly is close enough; its slightly different but the same structure is there, the time is different and its sung in a lower key and of course ColdPlay's instrumentation makes an interesting mask.

    Cat Stevens wrote the tune.

  • @CurtisHalfHalf

The structure is not there. Each song uses a different chord structure. 2-5-1-4 (for Heaven) & 4-5-1-6 (for VLV).

The one similar thing is the groove of both songs. But that's about it. The most important thing in plagiarism is a VERY close melody line and usually supported by other factors.

Here, you're talking about two basic 4-chord songs made of standard diatonic chords. What do you expect? Any Blues song ever made is then a plagiarism of the first Blues song..

  • @Erotomaniax Im sorry,my ears work; theyre extremely close,ColdPlay split the count on the time & Cat Stevens used more than 4 chords, go look it up, and I dont believe the published music is what they actually are playing in the recorded song, they have so much layered synthesizing & of course the breaks are different,Cat Stevens end of 'Foreigner Suite' is much shorter than Viva La Vida with lyrics.

You can think Im wrong until youve heard both pieces on PIANO, I suggest you do so.

  • @CurtisHalfHalf

Ur just pointing out more differences. The "layered synths" and all that shit is only proving you're wrong because they're indeed differences.

I don't need to look up inaccurate chords on the internet. For simple songs like this, I can use my own ears and, if need be, my hands to confirm on an instrument. The CORE of Heaven is made of 4 diatonic chords, r u sure your ears work? =D

To prove anything in ur direction, Just Show Me MELODY LINES in each song that sound identical.

  • skip ads by pressing ur F5 button and 0:01 doesnt work

  • I once wrote a song that had the same guitar line of "the happiest days of our lives" by Pink Floyd, I had written the song before listening to "The Wall" album, I was like "noooo, I was so proud of myself", no kidding...it was a coincidence, that's all.

  • Such an annoying voice.

  • Coldplay did not steal it . Why would they steal it there already making millions, they would not risk it.

    Was this news report american

  • @PS3UltimateUK yes they did, they even admitted it, in fact they admitted to stealing tons of songs from other people

  • @thrasha666

Really?? Coldplay admitted blatantly stealing songs??? Hard to believe... You have any links or proof?

    Cheers \m/ (-_-) \m/

  • @Erotomaniax yea they have, not sure what it was called but theres a video on here with quotes from coldplays pussy frontman, and when you follow the links in the description it proves the quotes to be true...im doing this on my phone so i cant easily look for it, but ill look for the video and send it to you when i get home, your just pissed that coldplay has no originality

  • @thrasha666

I didn't purport any personal opinion about Coldplay, but whether they have originality or lack it, it's NOT like YOUR WORDS can determine that.

B.t.w. I'm a metalhead too, but I don't need to prove metal is the only "right" music. I leave that to opinionated shits ^_^

I'm only asking whether you can prove your claim that Martin admitted to blatantly stealing (which I doubt). & I ask that simply because, if it's true, that'd be interesting from the music Industry standpt.

    Metal

  • @Erotomaniax oh alright, i apologize for the attack at you, i thought u were gonna be one of those faggots that think coldplay (or justin beiber or etc) are the be all end all and try to claim that satch ripped coldplay off, that and im still on percocets from my motorcycle accident and they give me an even shorter fuse then i normally have...when i get home ill look for that video and send it to u

  • @thrasha666

Thanks for the links buddy. However Martin's admission about "ripping off" Jeff Buckley is just another way to say Coldplay is heavily influenced by Buckley. That makes sense, Buckley was one of a kind.

Similarly, Rob Zombie once said any metal song ever written is just a Black Sabbath riff played differently. That's just a manner of speech, of course.

The press will always try stir shit & sensationalize. That's unfortunately a pathetic side of their job.

    Send me the video :-)

  • @Erotomaniax alright well, when i get back from vaca. ill look for the video and send it to you, my flight home is on the 4th so ill have some free time on the 6th or so after catching up on everything...just remind me as my pain meds make me forget shit easily

  • @thrasha666

Yeah whatever dude. If that video is out there, somehow it'll come to me.

Hope you recover soon. Enjoy your trip!

  • @PS3UltimateUK

because stealing things is how they made the millions in the first place.

  • @PS3UltimateUK Youre a person who needs to have his hearing aids fixed...Coldplay stole the tune from Cat Stevens.....go listen to "Cat Stevens - Heaven".....written in 1973

  • Comment removed

  • Why is Chris Martin moves like a gay..while he surely isn't?

  • @delshayDiCamilliano Coldplay is the farthest thing from the most original band out there. The media portrays them as this unique, artsy band because they have a little more substance than all the other garbage on the top 40, however, there are many other bands who are way more original, and way more talented. For example, the artist Joe Satriani, from whom Coldplay stole subtstantial portions of their Viva La Vida melody from.

Joe Satriani is more talented than all of Coldplay combined.

  • @MrApocalyte That's your opinion. They're ONE of the most original. And of course there will always be better- in other people's minds. No one is right or wrong. Their music is philosophical. And that's it. And wtf. They did not "steal" anything. When you have over fricken 1000000+ songs on the market today, you're gonna have songs that sound the same. It's bound to happen.

And again- that's your opinion. I very much disagree with it. I see no purpose or meaning behind any of his music.

  • @delshayDiCamilliano Of course it's just opinions. I like Coldplay compared to the other top 40 soulless trash. I still assert that they aren't very original, they are just portrayed that way because they have a little more substance than all the other crap.

From a musician's perspective (and I play drums) I respect Satch for being a self-made axe man who can create epics with emotion, without needing lyrics. He's also taught many of the great guitarists of today.

And yea they did steal it :)

  • Chris Martin is a fake

  • bahaha thats if i could fly by satch

  • Coldplay is really great band of our dayz. I don't care if it copied or not because Viva La Vida is not that great anyway. Coldplay much more beautiful songs (Clocks, Speed Of Sound, Fix U, Trouble, etc, etc, etc,) and it is just beginning :)

  • Who the fuck are the Creeky Boards? Isn't this whole lawsuit about Coldplay vs JOE SATRIANI?

People say that the 4 chord sequential is just a coincidence and I would believe that, but you can't tell me that the melody is a coincidence to since it's IDENTICAL to Satriani's lead guitar part. Not to mention coldplay is being praised with that song and they've won several awards for it, and Joe got nothing for his. If they were inspired by him, couldn't they have at least mentioned his name?

  • Joe is realy the owner

  • coldplay is GREAT .VIVA COLDPLAY

  • this "show" or whatever you want to call it is horrible! please don't make any more of it

  • joe should get a damn life i swear to god who cares if you had a song that sounds simelar WTF

look if i were a artist/musician iwould totally have the new guys have fun i mean you know i wouldnt be pissed but you know people are turning dumber and dumber every day just be aware besides i dont even like viva la vida my least fave song of them but i like the album but joe is a whiny buttwipe for all i care he can jump from a building

  • @liam7887 after all the work he put into the song id be pretty pissed

  • Comment removed

  • joe has not been forgotten dumb ass they didnt discover this song caz everybody hates it and the rythem was changed and the words are diffrent so it is coldplays not joe whatever and its not coldplays fault they re did it better then his beside at the same time they made joe more popular so were is coldplays thankyou

  • WTF?... If Joe has a legitimate argument then somebody should do the story. Why the hell are great musicians forgotten and dipshits with one third the talent given the spot light? Are most people really stupid? I guess I answered my own question.

  • satch owns that bunch of crybabies

  • Comment removed

  • joe is the owner [2]

  • @nickcg check out enanitos verdes, cat stevens.. and you'll see

  • Comment removed

  • it´s Satriani song in did!

  • coldplay is a commercial crap..

    Satch is a real artist!

  • go fuc··· satch

  • joe satriani is the owner.. of music

  • damn straight

  • The song was simply stolen by Coldplay , see Enanitos Verdes, the real authors.

  • @caravaggio31 JAJAJAJ ENANITOS VERDES

no se si lo decis en serio igual pero me dio mucha gracia

  • Anyone who doesn't hear a resemblance between the 2 songs must be deaf. whether or not it was intentional can't be proven.

  • a damn commercial... same as with Gaga

  • I guess this is what Youtube is coming to, forced commercials that you can't skip.

  • @oryxfreeride Actually you can. Press F5 when the commercial starts and it goes straight to the video with no commercials.

  • @oryxfreeride

    press f5 to skip commercials.

  • @oryxfreeride you press f5 to skip vevo ads.works on almost all ads.

  • @oryxfreeride It's one of the facets that keeps the website up, though.

  • @oryxfreeride

would backfire if everyone went out of their way to especially NOT buy whats being advertised! ;)

  • I wet myself, who's him? hahaha

  • you are not a muci expert...

  • Fuck you Matt if you joined a band you would suck compared to the beatles

  • The chord progression is so simple, I'm sure it's been used before more than once.

  • coldplagio, o nx zero americano

  • VIVA LA VIBA HAHAAH xD

  • It's not ageism. What i'm said is: give 20, 40, or 100 years, and wait they REALLY compose something SO GENIOUS, similar to anything that Satriani created with only 5 years of work.

  • Satriani = Incredible themes Guitar Einstein

ColdPlay = New Kids on the block...

  • 20 years ago you could of said that Satriani was a new kid on the block....

    Ageism is stupid...

  • Satch=A Has bend

Coldplay=Best band ever, with its like Clocks, Trouble, Fix You, Lost, and much more.

  • I respect your opinion! The only thing that I can to affirm is that I have the sure that you are not musician...or it thinks it is! lol...hehehehe

  • @DanM25456

Coldplay isn't the best band ever, idiot.

  • Satriani may be a virtuoso, but so is John Petrucci... Neither write good music.

  • But apparently Coldplay does? You can't be serious.

  • According to you. I think you're a moron

  • Your obviously retarded... They are both amazing song writers..

  • Petrucci sounds like Nintendo! Hehehe

  • this whole youtube news thing is very haughty and ignorant. and one-sided.

  • Coldplay didn't copy any song it's stupid!!

  • The way he sings the lyrics sound like joes guitar playing. The rythym sounds the same. I pretty sure he did.

  • I think it is obvious coldplay stole the tune from Satriani. One listen says it all.

  • they didn't steal the tune is SIMILAR but the type of music is different

  • Of course they weren't going to make an exact copy of the song they mimicked, but it's still plagiarism. Coldplay has enough not-so-hard-earned money, why must you defend them?

  • Coldplay is an awesome band! I personally think its okay to take some parts of songs and use them in different ways. THAT IS COMPLETELY LEGAL! if joe satriani just keeps complaining, it shows that some people never learn

  • ur stupid satriani is a master of his instrument fuck coldplay and there copying

  • No it is not, it is violation of intellectual property, and Satriani is not complaining, he is suing them and has good chance of winning.

  • No. Couldn't it be just a coincidence that they sound similar?

And Satriani hasn't won at suing.

Not even "once" out of the many times he has tried.

  • Atomikadarkhero...

    Thankyou.

  • :) It all depends on the person. Some people don't even hear the resemblance.

  • Hey maggot, why dot you get your fathers dick out of your mouth before you speak to your superior, you have to learn to respect the dick that keeps you mother happy boy, I may even be your real dad..... But who really knows, what we do know for sure is that I'm your "brother in law", well more like your sisters fuckfriend.

  • what a lovely sentiment

  • Anyways please tell that little slut you call your girlfriend to wash my boxers, I left them under your pillow. Oh and about those love stains on your bed, don't sweat it man... whats a little DNA ammong good fellas Right.

    Fuck You very much.....

  • They copied off joe satrianis if i could fly. dam why do over rated bands copy hmmmm.

  • you know... i dont care if coldplay copied someone with something... its the best song ever! it makes you feel good that is what a song is all about!

  • i loveee coldplayy

  • People should just LISTEN to music and appreciate them and just stfu about anything else

  • Did The rolling stones ask Jonny Buckland to play for them?..NO....did deep purple ask Jonny Buckland to join the band as replacement for richie blackmore ( if Jonny Buckland was playing at that time ) NO...joe did that..he toured with the rollings stones and with deep purple but he didn't want to replace richie Blackmore..so definitly joe is way way better than Jonny Buckland.

  • Please learn how to use the english language properly before you reply to my comments.

  • coldplay rulez

  • Wow, i pity your insolence fool.

  • Comparing Joe Satriani with a pop band is an insult. Joe is a guitar virtuoso who has inspired millions of people to pick up guitar. Well, I am sure most of you people would have never heard of him before since most of you wold only listen to regular stuff on radio.

  • FUCKING AMEN!!

  • i gotta agree with TulPPP, i never heard of Satriani untill this controversy. i think Satriani is amazing, and so is Coldplay. i think each song has its own personality and style though. no robbery.

  • anyone who listens to metal or is into guitar has heard og satriani. idk about what music u listen to but satriani is indeed a big guitar idol and very famous. i doubt i know many of the artists u listen to

  • you're one of that kind of persons i'm looking for to help me with this battle xd.

    jk.

  • coldplay are bullshit satriani rules wankers!!!! satraini cover!!! joe satriani can rape all your fucking asses OWNED TOSSERS

  • fuck off.

  • ooh im scared! wht u gunna do if i dont? cyber-bully me? im shitting myself... not!

  • haha no, i'm not going to decrease myself til' your level.

  • ok 'the guitarist' is jon buckland.

    so call him that way.

and joe satriani has to thank coldplay. now everybody knows satriani. before this whole bullshit nobody knew him.

he's just jalous that coldplay did get a hit with this melody, and he did not.

    hahaha

    joe satriani, dream on.

    coldplay rules.

    ilovethem.

  • XD oh dear god... oh... joe being inferior to coldplay, thats freaking hilarious, well obviously coldplay knew about him considering they copied that part.

oh and coldplay must be *jealous* of joe's skill

  • gosh i hate satriani and i don't like all the satriani lovers. but, i admit, it wasn't that clever to put a look-a-like-satriani melody in viva la vida. but come on, be happy for coldplay. coldplay is a huge band, with much more fans than satriani. now satriani has fans too, because of coldplay!

i'm not loving coldplay less, i loooooooove coldplay.

    it just wasn't that clever.

but satriani is just being lifeless.

  • I didn't even hear of Satriani until this lawsuit.

  • me neither.

  • If you really want to put this argument in perspective: Take the four-chord progression that forms the backbone of this song, and figure out how many songs share the identical progression. There would literally be thousands upon thousands.

The point is, accomplished musicians (and Satriani certainly is one) understand that artists will inevitably borrow from each other, more often than not unintentionally.

Truly, Satriani has to know this. This issue is about Satriani trying to make money.

  • I'm sorry but don't compare a masterpiece(Joe Satriani), with a mediocre song like Viva la Vida.

  • lol... That's only your opinion, to someone Viva la Vida might be a masterpiece and Satriani's song mediocre...

  • YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND?

    Great! listen to Coldplay.

  • ...in hell!

  • Who cares if they copied the rhythm? I'm sure there are a million songs like that! They wrote their own lyrics and added a lot of their own things, so it's their song. End of discussion.

  • All care you dumb ass!!1

    DO YOUR OWN WORK!!!
