  • Missing you a lil bit Linda,,had to come by and remind myself,,,,,(smiles)

  • lovely ! This is one of my favorite songs! Hope all is well!

  • @singingsiren2007 Nice to hear from you. All is well indeed. You singing in NY much?

  • next to A Love Supreme, my favorite jazz song of all time......you sang the hell out of it!!!! Madd props!!!!

  • @Thespa77- regardless, this was an incredibly beautiful interpretation of the song. What a voice!!!!!

  • Wow, beautiful!! BRAVO!!!

  • According to my long time friend and jazz bassist: "Lush Life is not a 12-tone piece. It may use all 12 tones of the chromatic scale, but is still a tonal composition in every respect."

  • Wonderful, Linda!!

  • Hi Linda. According to a columnist of a portuguese newspaper, yours is one of the best renditions of this song (better than Sinatra!). Congrats:)

  • @lacagel That's astonishing. Thanks so much for that amazing information. Do you recall who the columnist is or in what paper he writes?

  • @lacagel Sure, his name is Miguel Esteves Cardoso, and the newspaper is called "Público". In case you`re unable to find a proper translation, i`ll try to give you a link, and translate it.

  • super good!

  • @sistalinda:

I just disagree that this is a 12 tone piece. Please explain why you think that?

  • Nothing feels as good as a well sung standard. Very nice.

  • sista linda that was a fantastic rendition! well done.

  • And I thought I sang this well. Thank you. It was an absolute pleasure listening to you. Peace.

  • this is as beautiful as the beautiful woman who sings this song. lovely lady. lovely

  • you're amazing!!!!!

  • it means a lot, very difficult melody, perfect take.

  • nicely done - thank you!

  • How is Lush Life a 12 tone piece?

  • @altoplayer69 I'm presuming you are a musician, a saxophonist. I'm not sure how to answer your question. Please clarify... Are you interested in the theoretical principles of dodecaphony? Or are you curious about what elements in the peice cause me to have arrived at the conclusion that it is dodecaphonic? Both? Please say more...

  • @sistalinda It's very dissonant, but it's definitely not twelve tone. I really like your cover by the way.

  • @pianoman47 Not Schoenberg-esque dodecophony, but analyze the melody rather than the harmony, the use of all 12 pitches, melodic line without a tonal center particularly in the recitative portion. This is twelve-tone.

  • @sistalinda I never thought of it that way. Thank you for helping to keep this music alive.

  • @sistalinda Twelve tone technique has a lot more to it than simply a melody that doesn't sound like it has a tonal center. There is a very specific set of rules and procedures involved in twelve tone writing; Lush Life is certainly not a twelve tone piece.

  • Muito Obrigado!! Greetings from Portugal. Classic Billy Strayhorn; I have one more recent version by Natalie Cole and the only difference between both is...the Orchestra with the lush strings. Oh to team you up with an orchestra - a music producer who doesn't do this soon is mad and doesn't know just what talent is escaping him/her!

  • oh i do love this song, and your version is just as great as any of the people you listed that help make it famous.

    michael

  • Thanks Michael. Glad you like.

  • I dont think she has a sad face, She has a lovely face!! But this is a sad song so one can't laugh when ons sings it.

    And her voice......is like: HEAVEN!!!!:)

She is a very good and great jazz singer!!!

Keep it up girl!!! I love your voice and interpretation on this song!!! Its perfect!!! so what jazz is all about!!

Love from Holland xxx Patty de Gooijer

  • Encore!

  • You have a beautiful voice.

  • as always soo awesome ,Keep it up!

    greetings from Germany

  • good singing!

  • you are a jazz singer and i'm a lover of songs.

  • Good rendition-keep up the good work!

  • dear, you have a sad face

    but dont worry so much

    god bless you-

  • For a sad song I go to a sad place in my heart and mind. Then the sad face comes naturally.

To see my happy face, see Let's Fly Away, Corcovado, Wave, One Day and others all in the window on the right marked More From: sistalinda.

    Thank you for the blessing.

  • Lovely voice. First class Strayhorn. Beautifully interpreted. (You sound vaguely Brazilian. Are you one of us?)

  • "Are you one of us?" Striking question.

Yes, I am Brazilian, but none of my ancestors are.

    Obrigado para a pergunta intrigante.

  • Very intriguing indeed. Truth is I noticed (wrongly, it seems) the slightest trace of Brazilian accent

  • I love this piece. It's not easy to sing either. Nice job! I like the "huh" after "rot with the rest." :)

  • Thanks cocomaire, You are right. It's not an easy piece. But a lot can be said about it both lyrically and musically.

Though I love this composition, that line "while I rot with the rest of those whose lives are lonely too," never sat well with me.

Just between you and me, the 'huh" was my way of protesting it.

For some reason, a previous line is the real kicker for me... "Romance is Mush." I guess I like the irony.

  • WISH I HAD YOUR VOICE - AND I'M A MALE!!!

  • LOL

  • you have a lovely voice.. one of the nicest on Youtube... please feel free to check out my channel if you get the chance sweetie.

    much love

    Angelie

    x

  • Thanks Angelie. You sound really nice. Thanks for letting me know about yourself. Very impressive work.

  • god what a song! thanks for posting this. lovely voice - and you didnt pick an easy one either.

god bless billy strayhorn. may his memory be evergreen.

keep on singing and keep on dreaming.

  • You're inside this song. Beautiful.

  • @REBrandenburg Yes. Yes.

  • wow your voice is beautiful

  • Thank you Latoya.

I just read your profile. I'm sending you something.

  • This is without a doubt one of the truly difficult ballads to sing. Great job!

  • now this is talent...when are u going international girl?

  • I'm a homebody. I guess I'll have to rely on youtube to make me 'international.'

  • Hey I heard this song today in my intro to jazz class and loved it. You did a good job singing. One of my favorite lines is romance is mush stifling those who strive.

  • INTRO TO JAZZ. Excellent.

Yeah, that line has a way of stopping many of us in our tracks the first time we hear it.

The utter irony of the lyric "romance is mush..." is so compelling and yet antithetical for the hopless romantic personality that singers often have.

Lush Life may be the quintessential jazz piece of the 20th ce. Enjoy your studies.

  • and quite cathartic as well,,,,,,,,,,,,thank u

  • *wink*

  • Total relax 4 my "jazzy" soul *_*

  • Thanks Jazzy Carlos.

  • wunderbar!:)

  • Vielen Dank!

  • gorgeous

  • Pretty good! I have this dream to sing this for some strange reason and I chose your video to study. Thanks!

  • zkyles,

Since you have chosen to study me, please let me know if you post a recording of yourself singing Lush Life.

I'd love to hear your interpretation.

  • Beautiful! Wow.

    Nicely done.

  • tough song..great job...

    -Emile

  • such a talent,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • I'm honored, Cartier.

    Thank you kindly.

  • youre welcome love and from one music lover to another,i must say that,,,,,, i noticed you chose to record this unadorned and in a very calm, relaxed and natural state,,, well my sweet that choice spoke volumes about not only your character but also about your willingness to be transparent and exposed, further heightening my cathartic experience,,,,,,,,,,, yes you are truly remarkable and special,,,what a wonderful gift you have,,,,,,

  • You read me like a book. If we were face to face, I might have blushed.

I do prefer transparency, and being natural. But I admit to playing dress-up now and then.

Incidentally, in my humble opinion ROMANCE is NOT mush. But like so many songs, this merely expresses temporary melancholy... a sentiment I know intimately and can express with honesty.

    Once again, I am honored.

  • I would pay a kings ransom to see that blush and smile,,,,,,(smiles,,,,,,,and yes i know all too well that sentiment and the solace it seeks) so maybe its a good thing you werent here i'm certain i would be overwhelmed by your presence and tempted to play for keeps,,,,,,,,(smiles) take care Mon Cheri,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • Hey SisLinda, I'm glad that you love it enough to want to practice it like that..... as we all know, practice makes perfect. I love it too but I'm still not sure if I have a particular genra...I really do wish that I had the time to practice it often....God bless you n thanks 4 ur friendship!..... E.

  • Sisterlinda where did you first learn how to sing like that? Need I say it is very remarkable. I'm just kind of guessing that you would be a great Jazz artist but you could probably fit into any category. May I ask what is ur fav. song of all time is? I agree with SmushyWushy, it was just Lovely listening to you. I don't know if you realize it or not but ur music seem to take me to another place. Keep up the good work! Blessings and peace.................. E.

  • Thanks for all of your kind words.

I sing all the time. Singing is like breathing to me. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a natural like some of the greats we all know and love. I just happen to love music enough to work hard at it.

    PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

  • woah. i love it.

  • Thanks girl. You deserve a WOAH yourself!

  • this is a 12 tone piece. now i don't have much to do with music - but i do know of an analysis which says that if the tone piece number is prime then the song rhymes much better and for those who don't believe just search "prime numbers music" on google ok? conclusion, i'm smart, you suck

  • LOL

  • poisonfume you're an absolute idiot. As you say yourself you "don't have much to do with music". Your comment is so ridiculous I don't even know where to begin refuting it. You read on some bullshit website that prime numbers in music is good, and you just about know that 12 isn't a prime number, therefore you're "smart" and she "sucks"? Please stick to making crappy little videos about video games, and don't attempt to write music criticism ever again you clown.

  • Very Nice Indeed !

  • beautiful!!!!

  • You have such expressiveness in your face when you sing! Who was accompanying you here? Was it pre-recorded? Just lovely!

  • Very nice! Thanks for the insight on this song. I really like Donna Summer. Her concert performance that aired on HBO years back was unforgettable!

  • Was she singing jazz. Actually, come to think of it, she probably pulled out highlights from her entire career including her broadway stint with HAIR.

Jazz musicians have a lot more respect for her than many of the pop divas who have come and gone. She really has some chops.

If you're in NY at the end of March, I'll be singing uptown - in HARLEM.

  • Thanks for making my evening after watching the Independent Lens documentary on Billy. Lush Life flowed outta you, sista, so beautifully, so mello and blue...Thank You!

  • Glad to be a part of your evening.

  • Damn! DAMN Damit!!!! I can't believe people don't recognize true talent when they see it. You have a true gift. I just bore witness to true amazing gift. Beautiful black woman. I don't know your name but you are the truth in the light.

  • Yeahhh !!! amazing ,emocional ,beautyfull. etc,etc,etc..............I loved !!!

    from Brasil your fan...

    Jeff

  • Thanks Jeff from Brasil. Nice to have your visit. Come again.

  • Wow! What a wonderful voice - and of course a wonderful song. Do you have a CD? You have such a pretty voice.

  • BRAVISSIMA.ADY

  • I can feel it...

  • Great! That's really nice to know.

  • Meravigliosa...

  • Thank you, Sottugghiemete.

  • So powerful! You've captured the feeling.

  • Thank you, Laura. I appreciate your observation.

  • wonderful . i love the simple way you do it without a pose. carry on and much happiness

  • Thanks. I was intentionally relaxing. One of my mentors impressed me with the idea that music should sound like it's easy even when it's really difficult to execute.

    Peace to you.

  • Thought provoking comment. That single word "SUBLIME" gives me pause. I'm truly flattered.

  • Love ya-you deserve all the success in the world!

  • Beautiful!!!...

    ;-)

  • nicely sung - well done

  • Thank you.

    Do you play the glockenspiel?

    It's such a pretty instrument.

  • really great! =D

  • Thanks much.

  • Lovely, convincing performance of a song few singers can handle.

  • Thank you.

I think one has to pick the right moment. It's easier to be convincing when you yourself are convinced.

    (Heart on sleeve.)

  • You've done this song well. Beautiful and sincere effort, despite being such a difficult piece to attempt. Five well-earned stars.

  • Thank you kindly.

I guess when you have the blues, that is the best time to sing the blues.

    The human condition.

  • love it...it's great..keep singing..you have a gift..you should do club dates!!!

  • Hey, put a couple of Bossas on that CD and I'll take the next 20!

  • Oh, you know it.

  • You got it.

  • Sorry, that should have read 'complex'. Now where are those dammed glasses?

    Ronan

  • That's ok. I read TYPO fluently and speak 7 or 8 dialects of GIBBERISH. So, Nothing was missed, my friend.

  • A beautiful and coplex song sung beautifully by someone who obviously has a music gene embedded in their genetic code.

Superb delivery. 5 Stars and Fav!

    Ronan

  • Thanx for the dreamy interpretation, Linda, and for the lesson in jazz history as well! With so much key changes it must be a challenge to sing and even to play on piano!

  • It certainly trains the ear.

I was in my senior year studying modern composers' atonal pieces. This piece became a part of my repertoire at the same time. As i was learning it, I realized that every note is touched on in the melody. Quite a coincidence.

I haven't really studied the progression yet. But I will.

  • I hear Ella and Sarah. I love your phrasing and the way you ride the melody. Sing on!

  • Although I never try to imitate them, I guess their influence crept in. I listened to them from time to time as a child. My mom used to let me stay up late to watch them on PBS specials.

I also saw Mel Torme, Carmen McCrae and Betty Carter.

But Ella and Sarah are at the top of my list.

  • Influeces linger in the subconscience, embrace them. Exposure to the greats nuture the soul in unexplainable ways, enjoy them.

  • YES! YES!

I relish it. Standards get set pretty high based on exposure to greatness.

    Thank you so much.

  • Beautiful song and well done! Thanks for sharing! Five stars!

  • Lovely, lovely, lovely.....

  • That really was basic and simple, yet very excellent indeed. You're really really good.

  • Thank you, Kenny!

  • i luv it***********

  • Hey SIS!

Heard there was an explosion in Istanbul. I pray everything is well with you and your friends over there.

It's been years since any news like that came out of Turkey.

    Warm hugs to you.

  • Great performance, 5* A.D. :))

  • Thank you.

    Thanks for visiting again

    ;-)

  • You've made it safely. Glad to hear it. see ya.

  • You're amazing Linda.

  • You talkin ta me?

Hey Pat, I hope all is stable with you. We're getting word of Earthquakes in So Cal.

  • Hey Linda. The quake was a 5.4. A midsized shaker. No big deal for this part of the country.

  • Beautiful Voice!! Excellent!!

  • can we retire strange fruit by billie holiday

i love her and the song. last call though.

  • strange fruit - last time

by an artist that can sing anything.

    no more

  • Fabulous!! I really enjoyed it! Thank you, hon.

    Sandy xx

  • i so love you :) thanks again...

i don't remember you doing this before, but then again, i sometimes forget where i laid my pliers, and etc... so... glad to hear it again.

this video has several aspects that are really interesting now and will be much more interesting in years to come... the web seems to do a good job of preserving videos (especially those we wish were no longer around) but still i hope you are backing all of this up with duplicates. this is really beautiful.

  • Hey darlin,

This is a new post. The background visual is probably the familiar thing.

I do have this backed up. But I can always sing it again. I'd like to include this on a cd. We shall see. I just need a brilliant producer... or at least a smart one.

  • Smooth as smooth can be :)

    ~NICE~

  • Thanks DW.
