According to my long time friend and jazz bassist: "Lush Life is not a 12-tone piece. It may use all 12 tones of the chromatic scale, but is still a tonal composition in every respect."
@lacagel Sure, his name is Miguel Esteves Cardoso, and the newspaper is called "Público". In case you`re unable to find a proper translation, i`ll try to give you a link, and translate it.
@altoplayer69 I'm presuming you are a musician, a saxophonist. I'm not sure how to answer your question. Please clarify... Are you interested in the theoretical principles of dodecaphony? Or are you curious about what elements in the peice cause me to have arrived at the conclusion that it is dodecaphonic? Both? Please say more...
@pianoman47 Not Schoenberg-esque dodecophony, but analyze the melody rather than the harmony, the use of all 12 pitches, melodic line without a tonal center particularly in the recitative portion. This is twelve-tone.
@sistalinda Twelve tone technique has a lot more to it than simply a melody that doesn't sound like it has a tonal center. There is a very specific set of rules and procedures involved in twelve tone writing; Lush Life is certainly not a twelve tone piece.
Muito Obrigado!! Greetings from Portugal. Classic Billy Strayhorn; I have one more recent version by Natalie Cole and the only difference between both is...the Orchestra with the lush strings. Oh to team you up with an orchestra - a music producer who doesn't do this soon is mad and doesn't know just what talent is escaping him/her!
Hey I heard this song today in my intro to jazz class and loved it. You did a good job singing. One of my favorite lines is romance is mush stifling those who strive.
youre welcome love and from one music lover to another,i must say that,,,,,, i noticed you chose to record this unadorned and in a very calm, relaxed and natural state,,, well my sweet that choice spoke volumes about not only your character but also about your willingness to be transparent and exposed, further heightening my cathartic experience,,,,,,,,,,, yes you are truly remarkable and special,,,what a wonderful gift you have,,,,,,
You read me like a book. If we were face to face, I might have blushed.
I do prefer transparency, and being natural. But I admit to playing dress-up now and then.
Incidentally, in my humble opinion ROMANCE is NOT mush. But like so many songs, this merely expresses temporary melancholy... a sentiment I know intimately and can express with honesty.
I would pay a kings ransom to see that blush and smile,,,,,,(smiles,,,,,,,and yes i know all too well that sentiment and the solace it seeks) so maybe its a good thing you werent here i'm certain i would be overwhelmed by your presence and tempted to play for keeps,,,,,,,,(smiles) take care Mon Cheri,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

this video has several aspects that are really interesting now and will be much more interesting in years to come... the web seems to do a good job of preserving videos (especially those we wish were no longer around) but still i hope you are backing all of this up with duplicates. this is really beautiful.
This is a new post. The background visual is probably the familiar thing.
I do have this backed up. But I can always sing it again. I'd like to include this on a cd. We shall see. I just need a brilliant producer... or at least a smart one.

I love this piece. It's not easy to sing either. Nice job! I like the "huh" after "rot with the rest." :)
cocomaire 2 years ago
Thanks cocomaire, You are right. It's not an easy piece. But a lot can be said about it both lyrically and musically.
Though I love this composition, that line "while I rot with the rest of those whose lives are lonely too," never sat well with me.
Just between you and me, the 'huh" was my way of protesting it.
For some reason, a previous line is the real kicker for me... "Romance is Mush." I guess I like the irony.

Hey I heard this song today in my intro to jazz class and loved it. You did a good job singing. One of my favorite lines is romance is mush stifling those who strive.
ComfortingLie007 2 years ago
INTRO TO JAZZ. Excellent.
Yeah, that line has a way of stopping many of us in our tracks the first time we hear it.
The utter irony of the lyric "romance is mush..." is so compelling and yet antithetical for the hopless romantic personality that singers often have.
Lush Life may be the quintessential jazz piece of the 20th ce. Enjoy your studies.

i so love you :) thanks again...
i don't remember you doing this before, but then again, i sometimes forget where i laid my pliers, and etc... so... glad to hear it again.
this video has several aspects that are really interesting now and will be much more interesting in years to come... the web seems to do a good job of preserving videos (especially those we wish were no longer around) but still i hope you are backing all of this up with duplicates. this is really beautiful.

Hey darlin,
This is a new post. The background visual is probably the familiar thing.
I do have this backed up. But I can always sing it again. I'd like to include this on a cd. We shall see. I just need a brilliant producer... or at least a smart one.
