Or you can just do: Click on the half white, half black circle near the layer palet. Choose Black and White. And Paint over the picture where you want colour.

that was the hard way to do it...add a layer change to black and white merge layers use history brush on areas you want colored...bam..done...none of all that selecting stuff..too time consuming

nice effect, but theres an easier way....

1st make a copy of the layer

2nd make this layer black and white

3rd use the history brush on the areas you want coloured... done!

@capatainnemo @capatainnemo for some reason this just does not work for me, however the tutorial above does. When I do it this way the only thing that is painted is black on the image OR it's reversed(where black and white is painted on the color image). This way it's done in this video is more tedious, but at least it works for me.

I use photoshop elements, not sure what a "history" brush is though, don't see that option.

@gibsboss or it's possible that you don't have the more expensive version of photoshop: there's photoshop extended, photoshop and lightroom (extended is the most expensive lightroom is the least) or maybe you have an earlier version - this is CS4 you may have CS2 or 3

when you make a selection you must use the marquee tool and then with the right key of the mouse will appears layer via copy

btw if don't works, after your selection, you can do inverse select and then you put the black and white

it is the same, but with a new layer you can apply others effects in the layer style menu,

set top layer to black & white

then just use erase tool on parts u want colored XD no problem
