@btarrh I agree with the ford 8.8 and you get the disc brakes, use dodge Dakota rear flex brake lines it's a direct fit.

Piss on the 44, save your cash and do what I did. Go to the clunker yard and pickup an 8.8 from a 95-01 Explorer, be sure your gear ratio matches. Most of these axles can be picked up for around $100. Spend the $250 on the axle brackets from Rocky Mountain Off-Road and weld them on. Now remove your Dana 35 and sale it for $300 on Craigslist. The 8.8 is much stronger and cheaper than any 44. Cheers!

I would expect it was a busted hub or axle.The backing plate was covered in plastic like he didn't want mud and dirt to get in.I've driven home(not far)on a flat spare already.It was a plain steel rim that I had a few of.So you can assume he had a damn good reason for not using the spare.

it's obvious they popped the retaining circlip that holds the axle in the spider gear of the rear differential assembly. thus causing the axle to come out of the housing along with the wheel. notice wheel and axle as an assembly in back seat. though a very effective way of avoiding a tow bill..
