  • You need to practice a little more piano. tempo is a little off at some parts. Not even a mechanical piano can keep up with tatum.

  • hi can you maybe tell me how you made this video? i'm doing a school project and wanted to do a similar thing but i don't know how to film this any tips/ideas? also what program did you use for this?

  • i think art tatum has 4 arms

  • Nice MX100 from Yamaha... have suchone in white.

Para... wir sehen uns dann am Mittwoch in D´dorf ... aber diesmal ohne das ich Klavier spielen muß.

  • this has to be my favorite version of this song. great job! :)

  • I believe it was Ray Charles who said, "He ain't got but 10 fingers but it sounds like 10 hands".

    Amazing. one of a kind.

The closest is Oscar Peterson RIP.

    Nobody else comes close.

  • @loocee95 Ray Charles' comment says a lot.

  • Hello. Can anyone tell me how toget this MP3 please? thanks

  • This is obviously MIDI...every note is hit with the same pressure. It sounds shallow, expresionless, and fake. Fortunately, player technology learned to give "expression" to rolls produced in the 20s and later, which took some of the flatness out of them. Thus I would take the old player/paper roll technology over this any day.

  • this is kinda scary :S

  • Thank God I got turned on to Art Tatum. He's incredible!!! I play piano & love different genres. I make a lot up myelf. My Mom & Dad bought me a Steinway Baby Grand when I was a kid & I play it a lot! :-{)

All the Very Best 2 ALL in 2010 :-{)

  • excellent !:)

i have this midi file on my site ... :)

do you know the other version of T42 ( willy the lion smith ? : ) )

    @+

  • I agree that original piece should be played in some other way to enhance its beauty and as time evolve it will go better and better.

  • Very cool!

Is this your piano's sound or a Midi upload?

Sounds kind of "fake" to me.

  • Qué grabación tan estupenda nos brinda pianoplaylist de este famoso jazzista Art Tatum quien, aumque no lo vemos tocando el piano, nos deleita con su interp`retación

  • I'm surprised the piano didn't burst into flames

  • There's a difference at 0.12?

  • This is not how Tea for Two was played in Art's recording. I heard something different, something better than this. This is a joke that attempts to pay homage to the actual recording. Tons of inaccurate transcribing.

  • Well, you know more than I do about it, but this this is created by a computer as his recording is played. It's supposed to be accurate, perfect rendition of the same notes, supposedly.

  • An "accurate, perfect rendition of the same notes"... that really doesn't make it the same, there's no depth to the whole piece, no feel to it. Playing piano (and even more so jazz) is not about playing the right notes at the right time, it's about feeling and this video has none. It's a shame, because the original is so much better.

  • @Sun1fang it's only a machine for goodness sake ! and sounds fine given that !

  • Can you post the original recording? It was done in '33, wasn't it?

  • Art Tatum did many many renditions of this tune.

  • Of course he did. Nobody is going to play it the same, note for note, decade after decade. It evolves just like any other artist's art and style.

  • If this an inaccurate "joke" version of Tatum's performance, then my mind boggles to imagine what the real thing is like!!

  • It is, and if you want proof, you can watch my video of the actual version of how Art plays this piece.

  • @CBasie2856 I hope it is now obvious to you that the version of this song you have on your webpage is not the same one which was duplicated here?

  • @Huckabeezer

    That is correct.

  • @CBasie2856 Purism is for neurotics.WHO cares about "inaccurate" transcribing? Tatum ain't Chopin, although gifted with the same technical abilities, he didn't compose, he improvised, and if asked to "replay" this or that passage,he would have played it differently from 10 sec. ago. His recordings' sheet transcriptions will always be "moments musicaux", your sole concern must be: DO I SWING or not? Not ONE classical pianist I heard play this from sheet music is able to swing. Just enjoy.

  • @12rosebud12

actually he did compose a little. He has a few songs that he wrote, but they were never made mainstream pop tunes in his days. I don't remember what the songs were, but I do know that he wrote a few.

  • @CBasie2856 True, but seriously, I think a completely accurate transcription might break the poor piano.

  • @n3wrx

    lol I don't think so

  • nice paformans!?!?

  • in regard to the oguzstyler's comment, its a player piano. its not a person playing it.

  • it cant be possible, how could to played like this, he was an octopus? look left hand section, he need two left hand . i cant believing

  • Wow, Left handed orchestra and right handed horn section.

And half blind or 30% vision out of one yack, No bad eh?

  • Yeah, he was quite good

  • it really doesnt get any better than this

  • This is a supreme guide, not just to the genius of Tatum, but to how tea for two should be played -- with joyful exuberance, as if a swinging 2-5 is the most beautiful thing in the world.

  • dag how many hands did this guy have?!?!....great post

  • There's some good posts out there about his playing methods and how he made it sound like he was playing many more notes than he actually was. It was somewhat of an optical illusion, except to the ear.

  • Yes it was an auditory illusion, then!!!

  • He had BIG hands-seriously!

  • this looks familiar here....

  • razor old buddy, for information,i spoke today to my classical concert pianist friend, who is to perform in new york second half of october about tatum/horowitz.he said

'it's quite clear who was the better pianist' i asked 'who?' he replied without hesitation

'tatum of course'. rather made my day.also spoke to a former teacher at the chopin school of music warsaw who knew well of tatum and tea for two and commented how difficult his stuff was and so forth were.will try to get her to try it

  • 'better pianist' - that needs to be qualified, surely. horowitz wasn't a great improviser as far as I know, and i haven't heard tatum play chopin scherzos

  • well of course the statement is somewhat subjective but interesting . he probably meant that tatum had a greater scope in his mastery over the keyboard ! am not sure , was only a brief tel call and he's in aus and i'm in europe . we rarely talk ! at the end of the day i wd guess that , with practice , each could play the other's music . we'll have to wait till we get to the great piano room in the sky before we find out ! ! !

  • Wow this is great! They actually got Irwin Schwartz's MIDI transcription on a real piano. Still, someone has to post Tatum's original 1933 recording of this piece.

  • It is great! Thanks to Irwin, I was able to record this for the world. It is a shame all my other videos are gone now because of Time Warner Cable.

  • Ever since Google bought it out there are all these copyright issues. The truth is they're jealous because Google/YouTube has gotten so much bigger than them. I'm having some problems with my uploads, too. Even if I change the name and video, Google's "beast" knows whom the audio belongs to and won't let me upload some items.

  • The best thing to do with this is to take "old" ideas and make those old ideas "better". It's best to be creative. Copy old ideas and "vary" them.

You can transpose the key of the tune, and I've read that YouTube doesn't recognize this!

Always provide a description of the video, since this is further demonstrating your "creativity".

For example, what I did with my Stardust video was to take a Art Tatum picture off of Google and then edit it to make it look more "realistic".

  • But even if you take a picture off of Google and edit it with Paint or Photoshop or what ever image manipulation program you have, I am pretty sure that you have to give credit to the person or the people that originally posted the "old" photo in the first place. You credit the person in the description of your video.

  • Another thing that I do is post a video every once in a while. Most people don't post every day, and I'm pretty sure those that do get caught pretty soon.

If I don't get enough views for my video, than I delete it. Since nobody watches the video, what would be the point of keeping it on YouTube anyway?

I think certain file types are more susceptible to being illegal.

  • Always delete videos every once in a while so you can make room for new videos. You will gain more respect from YouTube if you do this.
