  • Thanks for sharing this!! I love how RDI highlights the building of RELATIONSHIPS (unlike ABA), how RDI strengthens the inner core of the child of WHO he is as a person (connected to others first and foremost and twirling in space by himself), and how it addresses the core deficits in the child's development and creates a place in which you can get a "do over" with your child (also vastly different than ABA).

Thanks too for keeping the "fight" in there! Makes me feel not so alone!

  • Ok - I feel the need to both clarify and defend myself. I guess what I am saying is this - how do you know that your "RDI Approach" is working (using data vs. opinion/emotion)? I'm only asking for clarification. With clarification of this... perhaps, RDI may work in a comprehensive treatment program.

For those who think there is no room for ABA (and only RDI), I challenge you to re-examine your opinions and read the research. I realize I need more training about RDI, as you do with ABA.

  • Hi, children are tested using the ADOS.

  • ABA = Applied Behavior Analysis.

There is a very inexpensive book, written by a parent called "The Verbal Behavior Approach" by Mary Barbera. It gives a very good overview of one of the ways ABA is used. Another popular program used with Children who have Autism is the Competent Learner Model (CLM) - CLM also uses ABA principles.

To reiterate what I said previously. The fact that ABA approaches are SCIENTIFIC and data driven + WELL RESEARCHED is why I always recommend them to parents.

  • oh..sorry, i guess that was a bad joke. of course we know what ABA is! Henry receives ABA at school and it has helped him a lot with language acquisition and learning how to read. however, RDI addresses the core deficits of autism that limit someone from being able to handle living in a dynamic environment (eg our world) and building long lasting relationships. this is what we're working on with RDI. i can send you research studies supporting this therapy, just send your email address. thanks!

  • Well I have read the book. How is her son doing now? How many friends does he have? Can he make fluid talk like you?

  • Although I do not have first hand experience with the author's son, I can tell you from first hand experience and direct work with students who have treatment through a VB/ABA approach that yes indeed - through an increase in communication skills, using ongoing data to drive instruction and decision making - social communication, friendships, and subsequent relationship building is established. For more information, I'd suggest attending a workship put on by "Establishing Operations."

  • Can you give us some statistic about success of ABA. How many special kids have grown up and living an independent life undergoing therapy?

  • ABA or VB develop skills and RDI develops ability to think and act in this dynamic world. Life is not fixed set of protocols. if you want to make your kid a Robot do ABA.

  • ABA says do it my way, I will reward you. RDI says guided participation is the key. The approach is parent driven and more of a lifestyle than a therapy. I admire fatakw for rightly demonstrating how a simple handholding activity could be an such a powerful activity to guide him to various stations like dish washing, changing beds so on. This is the start a journey of sharing, joint attention, spotlighting, love, collaboration and cooperation.

  • I applaud your strong efforts and work to help your child! You are amazing parents! With that being said, as a psychologist, I have real concerns about RDI. If you have not done so already, please look into ABA teachings (I.e. The Verbal Behavior Approach). I do not work or associate with any company/person associated with the selling of this. However, I am a school professional and have seen AMAZING results in kids - interventions have been scientific and data driven-the way it SHOULD be!

  • what's aba?

  • re: schpsyc77-It is very nice to offer another approach, but I feel as if you are not educated on the what RDI, is really all about. Being a school proffesional, explains your apprehensions about RDI, beacause most schools teach the opposite way that RDI does. Our family, signed onto the RDI program, for our son in August. This program is to remediate one from the disabilites non-neurotypical(ASD), children as well as adults, may have. Please research your scientific data, you will be surprised!

  • i think you guys did an awesome job! although i havent tried this with my students, i know i do a simular activity using chairs ..holding hands the whole time..although i think in my case its just pacing. i wanna ask my boss who is a consultant about this. i like the idea of just hanging out =)

  • i think what we can say though is that we are just working on getting comfortable with hanging out with Hank without there being any specific reason or objective. He's getting comfortable with our presence, not withdrawing from it.

  • yeah..unfortunately due to legal constraints, we can't really say much specific about the objectives in an open forum. Those objective numbers were just made up by our consultant...we can't include the real #s.

  • Can you explain more about what Objective 4 is and how this targets it? We are working without a consultant atm and would love to try some of this, but I am having trouble figuring out what you are spotlighting if anything.
