  • Should we turn our wrist to do the Windshield Wiper Forehand ?

  • hey will,

what level do you play at?

  • ww same as top spin ?

  • Topspin is simply generated by getting below the ball and swinging at an upward angle with a vertical racquet face. Topsipn creates a differnce in air pressure from one side of the ball to the other forcing the ball into the court. Topspin is a function of racquet speed and swinging anlge angle. If you want to increase your topspin then just increase the speed and upward angle. There is no need for this inefficient movement. Plus I'm willing to bet this movement could cause forearm injury

  • i prefer to finish my windshield wiper with my raquet facing horizantal with the ground

  • I hurt my wrist doing a windshield wiper. What should I do to prevent my wrist from getting injured?

  • @JoshuaMari relax your wrist, i used to get the same thing then wen i began to relax it stopped hurting. don't try to contro your raquet to do a windshield wiper, but let your raquet naturally whip around you

  • im still confused on how to do this

  • I suppose that one shouldn't move the wrist during the WW FH. I was under the impression that one had to forcefully turn one's wrist but I see from your video that it's all arm movement.

  • I think you forgot to mention that to have a ww fh one needs a high backswing like all the pros. Any other backswing won't do because one doesn't want to swing straight through the ball, as you point out.

  • You should make a video about how to hit a forehand depending on which on where you want to hit it.

E.G:I want to hit the ball deep(the other side) and I'm standing at the baseline and the contact point of the ball is at the knees, then: How much spin do I use? whats the follow through? Do I do windshield or normal? How hard can I hit it without busting the court? What's the angle of the raquet?

What do I do if I want to hit the same shot but the contact point is at the soulder height? Thx

  • Hey Will

Your videos are absolutelly amazing, I thought I knew a lot about tennis but clearly I don't. I was wondering: Is the angle of the racquet head( when making contact) suppose to vary depending on which shot you want to make, how far in the court you want to hit it, how much spin. For an approach shot at the knees, I'll tilt my wrist to lower the angle(less opened) of the raquet and do the windshield wiper, but if the ball is at body level, I won't tilt my wrist. Am I doing it right?

  • Good explanation and use of different camera angles...i have taught this forehand to only about 25 juniors who have already developed a strong classic forehand...This should not be taught to anyone that isn't at a 4.0 level or above, if they can't hit a regular forehand, they've got bigger problems than not being able to do this.

  • I think the key thing that was mentioned is that the follow through is a result of the forward swing. If you swing steeply up to contact then relax afterwards your racket will end this way naturally. I see a lot of players focusing on this type of follow through trying to imitate pros but because they dont get the forward swing right it wrecks their game. After the ball has left your racket your follow through cant affect that ball. I teach this stroke but I make sure the player understands this

  • This is great but what happens if I'm at mid-court or near the net do I try to add even more topspin or will I need to alter a few other aspects for example power and contact point?

  • @thedoctorthemaster dont swing if your near net unless its a so you know you can drive in. otherwise just volley it

  • Hi Will,

I would know the difference between the Windshield Wiper forehand and the Top spin forehand...

    Thank you for your help.

  • great comment Yensterrr, some people think that the wipe should be right after contact.

  • 10.000 ground strokes to avoid hitting to the net, or you could just aim higher

  • You have to remember to wipe after you extend your arm after you hit the shot. If you wipe instantly after contact, it'll create a sidespin ball that's short.

  • there is one major disadvantage with wiper forehand is that it doesn't have the power to penetrate deep down your enemy's line for a winner. however if you developed steady constant wiper forehand it will dramatically reduce your forehand unforced error. wiper forehand motion put lots of pressure on the brachioradialis which is what they called tennis elbow

  • @nico74321 has a point, im not havin a go at the coach here, or any coach teaching the windshield coz it is VERY helpful, but, has the technique allready come and gone? players are just bludgeoning the ball now with little top spin it seems

  • So basically if i use a semi-western grip, instead of swinging through, i would go upwards as i follow through?

  • lol how can u hit 10,000 groundstrokes and not loose count

  • ya I'l just hit around ten thousand and it will be all good lol... jks

  • i dont recomend this for kids cuz im 14 and i kept doing this and i was not strong to handle it and almost got tennis elbow so maybe highschoolers shud use it

  • it's probably cause you dont swing high enough. im 15 and i can do this fine.

  • yea it puts alota strain on the wrist dont try and force this forehand wait till it devlopes on its own if it dosent its not for you

  • I've been hitting this forehand for years and I'm trying to avoid it, when I was a kid I had a beautiful flat powerful forehand, and now I can't hit it, I miss the feeling. Heavy top spin makes you feel good because you are swinging away, there is more consistency but a lot of times the ball just falls shorter and bounces higher. My problem is that sometimes I can't finish the point like I used to, this motion is embedded in my muscle memory and I want to get back to my flat Lendlesque style.

  • Windshield wiper is soon becoming more popular than traditional...gaining popularity fast. (Nadal hits it.)

Amazingly effective for spin, but nearly useless when you're going for winners.

  • You gotta look for winners differently with this shot, like a short and wide ball, you can really pull a person way further out of the court with it.

  • almost all pro male players use windshield wiper fh's.

  • is it harder to hit high bounced balls with ww forehand than traditional forehand?

  • nice power with it

  • You can't be much of a tennis player with that remark!

  • Is it fair to say that many pros use a forehand that falls somewhere in between ww and classic?

  • i have a question. can you still hit a windshield wiper with an eastern grip?

  • nice thanks

  • hit about 10,000 ground strokes *insert sarcastic emote here*

  • Well, 10 000 times is an approximation of many times you need to gain muscle memory for any complex movement.

Pitching, performing a slap shot, making a serve, hitting a golf ball and ,what interest us now, hitting groundstrokes.

But, it means 10 000 times with a correct technic.

  • At least, as correct as the number of time you played it allows you to.

If you do this, you don't have a solid stroke, you have a master stroke, probably suitable to play some ATP players. 10 000 times literally means you will end with an almost perfectly timed, very controlled and natural swing you don't have to think about.

  • now do it two handed backhand

  • can somebody tell me what`s the best grip to hit the windshield wiper?

  • semi-western unless u like full western

  • semi western

  • No "best grip" but the WW motion becomes easier the more extreme your grip gets. However, extreme grips can make it difficult to learn how to swing through the ball. So there can be a trade-off.

  • Also extreme grips aren't good for your wrist or elbow.

I broke my wrist with a semi-western and full western grip.

    I got a weird grip.

  • @FYB2007 this is a huge help thank you for all of your videos - i was practicing this against the wall and was only doing a 1/4 turn or just facing the wall while hitting and i noticed you were saying to turn sideways with the racket pulled back pointing to the fence - would this be to impart more topspin on the ball via having more trunk rotation ?and also having more of a follow through - i noticed by follow through was more limited with only doing the 1/4 turn.

    thanks Will !

  • you can still generate good topspin when you drive through the ball normally. just go low to high my dougie.

  • has anyone noticed that wen doin the shot u hear a nice 'swish' because the racket is brushin it. it just feel nice

  • Its not that hard. We callin it "fan"ing the ball. When federer playing and they say he has a strong wrist thats what they mean. Its most wrist

  • Looks hard as hell.

  • and extreme toppin like spanish players.?

  • hi FYB2007

i can hit topspin ball deep but how can I get aggresive topspin balls,?

    greetings

  • faster swing speed which is easier said then done lol

  • Surely this forehand is more useful for short put-away balls versus long drives at the baseline. Maybe I'm a bit skeptical, but I'd like to see someone hit consistently deep windshield wiper forehands into a strong wind! You definitely need the "through" action of a classic shot in that circumstance. Good that you said this is an advanced technique. I may be wrong but I think teaching this to beginners would destroy their stokes! Any pro who uses this shot is ALSO capable of a classic shot

  • hi

what about the lasso forehand which sharapova, davenport and clijsters hit

would you teach that ? or just leave it to the pros?

  • what i've kinda noticed is that that lasso or reverse forehand is useful for when you want to hit a sharp crosscourt shot/passing shot when you're pulled out wide on your forehand side, when you want to hit a topspin lob, and when there's a high ball you want to hit heavy topspin on

  • thats correct

    but

i have noticed shazza hit that lasso forehand when planted in the middle on the baseline lasso-ing the forehand crosscourt.

watch the utube shrapova vids, u'll see wat im talking about

    nadal does it too

are these bad habits? or can we do them?

  • i would think if you're trying to hit a wicked high topspin shot like nadal, it might be useful. i wouldn't do it for most of your forehands like sharapova, especially when you're trying to drive a flatter ball. you can see all of her shoulder injury problems she's been having the past couple years. i'm guessing it has at least a little to do with that reverse forehand.

but what do i know lol.. im not a tennis pro

  • i'm no pro as well but I completely agree. A lasso in my opinion is your ticket to early arthritis. pro's train on a different level with specific strength training to develop the supporting muscles around their joints. their wrists, elbows and shoulders are conditioned to take alot of stress unlike recreational players having a leisurely session.

  • *this

  • In wich situations do you use thins forehand?

  • What's the grip of Windshield?

  • you can use any acceptable forehand grip

  • Comment removed

  • wow. Despite his young age, this guy is pretty competent with the mechanics of tennis and has an engineer like teaching skill. Good stuff!

  • If you use a semi-western grip you're natural forehand will look very similar to this.

  • Great advice! keep up the good work!

  • i didn't know that the guy from tranformers was a tennis pro...

  • wow is that true...which character is he???is he the main character???

  • I'm pretty sure Kuznetsova hits this forehand

  • you got a medal for that?

  • this will break the string more... but i love it

  • The more you brush up on the ball the more likely you are to break a string. More spin = more string breaks!

  • its called pop guys =P

and its either because your slicing upward to much or you misshit a lot

    gg

  • i've been able to hit consistent with my windshield wiper forehand, but the problem is i dont get any power. i have a lot of topspin but i have no power

  • find the balance between swinging up on and swinging through the ball can be tricky. just takes practice... gotta experiment a little.

  • what's your forehand grip?

  • heel pad bevel 3 index knuckle 3 1/2... close to bevel 4.

  • these past days, my forehands have never been consistant. like sometimes there's days where i hit almost all of them in, and then there are days where i hit so many balls out and even hit the fence. i realized that my form is consistant. do you know how to improve my form?

  • i use ww forehand and i break strings at least once a week and i use luxilion strings.. is it just me? and i seem to frame more than i would using a classic. how could i lessen the frame shots?

  • Not surprising that you frame more shots -- your swing path is more vertical than it is on a classic forehand. No silver bullet to reduce frames... just have to practice a lot and improve your timing.

  • I mean Federer and other pros(tim hemmon) forehand are ww. The important point to stress is the follow thru should not be in front and rather should be behind your back same as the over the shoulder thing.

  • which is just forehand with a lot of top spin on it basically.

  • Hi fuz yellow ball. I played with a guy who hits with ww. Every time he hits the forehand, the ball dumps into the net cause he just brushes the ball and theres no forward push. His racquet strings got so much friction that they broke all the time. Worse he used his elbow and wrist to twist and not the shoulder so he had tennis elbow big time. So this technique is not for the novice. Unless you are pro like Rafa who is strong. Theres a reason why the classic over the shoulder is proper

  • Hi yokio. I agree that a novice shouldn't practice this technique. However, you don't have to be a pro to use the windshield wiper forehand. Club-level players can and shoulder learn how to hit this shot once they've master the classic forehand.

  • Hi fyb. Glad you agreed and disagreed with my comment. Shows you are a true pro who handles criticism. And I agreed with what you said. Federer's forehand is not truly ww. He does not just wipe the ball in front. Instead of following thru the stroke at the shoulder level, he follows lower under the shoulder almost at the elbow to keep the ball low and adds control. You shouldnt do the ww unless you have guns like Nadal or you are a body builder. Hugh forehand strength

  • How are you going to time the racquet with the ball if you're taking it of the line of the ball so soooon.

  • Hi Lucie. Can you be a little more specific... I don't fully understand your question.

  • O.K: How you going to hit the middle of the strings with a stroke like that?

    Thanks.

  • It's a matter of timing. You have to hit about 10,000 of them before you get the timing down -- before you can hit the ball in the middle of your strings consistently.

  • hahahaha 10 thousand LOL

  • I use the same grip as you! Though sometimes when I hit my forehand, it feels like I am hitting it with an open racket face. Should I try to adjust my wrist so that I am always trying to hit with the top of my frame?

  • switch to a semi western, should help with the roll in the end. the semi western should help with the angle of the racket. also it's adjustable if you want to hit it at an even more extreme angle.

  • I think it is a combination of many different variables that creates a stroke. Natural instincts, placement, power, finesse, comfort, situation, how you practice. So everybody commenting on this video is correct. Just use what you think is comfortable and you will have a combination of different types of stroke mechanics. Look at the pro's they are all different.

  • What program are you using to compare the two forehand motions??

    cheers!!

  • I use close to an eastern... in between and eastern and a semi western.

  • thats federer's grip

  • I have read about windshield wiper forehands, but i dont know what they mean by brushing the ball, then hitting over the ball. Can anyone tell me what this means about hitting over the ball?

  • Last thing, do you pronate your wrist as your making contact on windshield wiper forehand?

  • On a "Federer winshield wiper forehand" yes you do. But that isn't what we're teaching in this video. The way Federer hits his forehand is VERY difficult to master. Learn the stuff we talk about in this video. Then you can try and get more complicated.

  • Can someone tell me what I might be doing wrong? I brush up at the ball, but the ball goes out long.

  • Hard to tell without a video. Do you have one on youtube?

  • do you pronotate your wrists in ww fh "checking the time" as you do in classic fh?

  • Yep. That happens during the follow through in this particular WW. If you hit the "Federer WW" it happens a little bit earlier. But that's pretty complicated and a high-level shot.

  • well i really want to know about the fedex ww.a very good video that analzes his fh is..type "federer borg comparison" on you tube..please do so.

  • i feel federers fh is as follows.

1.prepare as you tell us to do so in the first 2 vids of fh

2hold extreme eastern grip or eastern grip

3pronate your wrists and finish at shoulder or at the pocket depending on the ball

  • forget federer. i hold a semi western grip...i prepareas you tell in the first 2 vids...i really concentrate on the other arm being parallel to the ground...after that i try to hit ball with rim....it is really difficult to get complete 180 degree pronotation that way.....could you suggest anything

  • i also want to know whether you should intentionally create the rainbow type fh as you do in this ww.what do you think after preparation?

  • Can anybody tell me what he means when he says you can't take classic mechanics and tack on the windshield wiper finish?

  • Hi tennisperson. Your follow through should be the most natural / comfortable way to slow the racket down based on how you were swinging prior to and at contact. Thus, if you hit a classic forehand you should have a "classic forehand follow through" and not a "WW forehand follow through."

  • Its all about where you want the ball to go. IF you use a WW forehand and finish at the pocket, your ball will travel lower over the net and fall shorter in the court.Finishing up higher, lets say over the shoulder will put the ball higher over the net and deeper in the court.Federer uses boths types of strokes in different situations. His forehand is with modified eastern grip, making contact as far out in front as possible, releasing his wrist and finishing somewhere bt his shoulder and pocket.

  • You're completely wrong about the strings always facing the net. Roddick almost always (if not always) hits with a windshield wiper forehand, it's only natural for his forehand grip. But he extends through the ball extremely, which has the strings facing the side. But when he continues across, they face the net again. The only necessary part of the windshield wiper forehand is the rotation of the wrist which applies extra topspin. Agassi hit like this, but had a classic finish.

  • Also, your statement that combining the classic swing and the windshield is impossible is completely false. FEDERER HITS THAT WAY! Wonder why he hits so hard and with so much spin? He has the best of both worlds, heavy spin from the wrist action of the windshield wiper forehand, and the pace and penetration from hitting through the ball the classic way. But he can combine both techniques in dozens of different ways, sometimes being pure in either direction, or mixed in any combination.

  • That is the reason why Federer's forehand was so much better at the end of 2003 to the start of 2005. He hit with a much more classic style back then (but still with many modern concepts). That gave him the incredible pace and consistency he enjoyed. Later on, his forehand moved more and more to the normal modern forehand. He generates more spin, yes, but he lost the power he had, in addition to the consistency (due to more shanks), and control (since flat shots have better directional control).

  • Well a WW forehand is where the strings stay facing the net during the follow through. If the racket ends up on edge at any point during the follow through it's not a WW. You are correct when you say that Federer combines a classic swing w/a WW finish. But his WW forehand and the one I talk about in this video are two different shots. He swings "classically" through the ball and creates a WW effect by pronating as he hits.

  • Thus, his swing path is not responsible for much of the topspin on his forehand NOR the WW finish. In the forehand I describe above, the opposite is true: the swing path creates topspin AND results in a WW finish. We taught this type of wiper, which is VERY common on the pro tour, as opposed to Federer's because his forehand is extremely difficult for most players to master.

  • wow 10000 groundstrokes, he said that so calmly

  • how do you go up with the racket

  • how you make the winshieldwiper motion.?

  • what racket do u use? the 98 or 106?

  • LOVE YOUR VIDS 5/5

  • Is this the technique that Federer uses?

  • yes

  • most pros have forehands that are based on windshield wiper forehands

  • If by "yes" you mean Absolutely Not. Federer's technique is absolutely the classic form and a slight variation of the eastern grip. If you want a good example of the WW forehand, check out Novak Djokovic.

  • im sou glad your left handed!! me too its hard to find someone left handed

  • i shouldnt really matter, since your looking at a screen, it will be flipped around, so he is actually on our right side, but you should be able to flip it in your mind, if not then......

  • Ay thanks i've been wondering what one was.

Turns out my forehand is a WW forehand.

    THANKS

  • well i hit with the classic and ww and the over your head or over the shoulder shot (the one nadal is known for). in terms of feel and fun i would say that the ww is the worst out of the three. ive seen alot of people with just the ww hit and they have far less power than other hitters. i think the over the head or same shoulder you hit the ball with is just as effective for topspin but gives more power. the ww is good for when you are close to the net though. good job on vid

  • trc138 doesnt know a lot about tennis-nadal uses the technic like all pros on tour

  • Thanks for this vid....it'll help a lot for me i developing my topsin. I might as well subscribe to you.

  • asian -- ya but you can hit w/a lot more topspin that w/a classic forehand.

  • isnt that just like a topspin forehand?

  • trc -- we say in the video that the path of the racket is what determines spin. you "swing up more" on a WW forehand. nadal's reverse forehand, which you are referring to, actually has the same swing path. he just finishes over his head b/c his body rotation stops right after contact on those forehands, making the WW follow through difficult to pull off.

  • in my opinion, i don't believe in this particular stroke technic. Nadal plays with the most spins on the tour, and rarely he uses this technic to generate spins. Instead, it's the angle of the racquet face at contact to the ball, and the racquet path that decides how much spin.

  • thats the same thing as wat he's showing u...

for the windshield wiper all u do is change ur swing path and racquet angle...

  • hahahahaha 10,000 groundstrokes

    nice detailed video :P

  • lol i know right!!?! i said the same thing! 10,000 but the sad thing is, hes probably right!!

  • very nice vid. it was easy for me to learn this because i am also left handed. thx for the help, my shots are landing deep in the court.

  • nice vid (as always :) ). my coach taught me the classic one, i will definately try the windshield wiper forehand

  • americapie

how you go get more spd, power and controll

    on topspin

    thanks a lot

  • Joon,

Thanks! Most of the time I hit with a double bend. I do hit straight arm on occasion though. Depends on the situation / type of shot I am trying to hit.

  • Great video. Very informative. I can now successfully hit a windshield wiper forehand because fo your vid. Do you hit a double-bend forehand?

  • i jus call this tha up and over shoot, lol

  • spankerer,

You can use any acceptable forehand grip... from an eastern to a western. I'm using close to an eastern when I hit these shots.

  • Doesn't this require the semi-western grip?

  • finnaly! a lefty. its different learning from a righty.

  • very good as usual keep up the good work!

    from a fan.

  • Thanks guys! Let me know how it goes.

  • This was helpful dude! I am going to go out and try 10,000 returns today!! Ok maybe a few less. Good Lesson! Better than what I pay for from a pro.

  • Great vudeo man..!! i love da way u explain the technique.

  • Great video.. I'm going to try this!

  • Ooo awsome thanks for the video :D, I'll definately try that out
