These kinds of things gave me fuckin' nightmares of such epic proportions that I would wake up covered in my own shit and crying desperately. The one about not playing pylons? Remember that one? I spewed with sheer fear when I saw that for the first time. We had pylons near our house and I would start to worry that one day I may go mad and actually climb one of the fuckers. How many fucking idiots have died by climbing pylons I wonder?
@Keelen35. Amy AKA Jayne Tottman was in a look and read, the part she played in the dreaded Superman film which I was no fan was called Briony. I would say Jayne Tottman is well and truly, out of the acting profession and doing a more substantial job these days.
These pifs are not shown anymore, Amy the in the vid with the frisbee going into an electrcial substation was foolish but not a murderer. Jimmy her brother was a foolish lad, he went into the substation and got a fatal electric shock silly lad.
@keelen35 The girl Jayne Tottman plays is called Amy she is the sister of Jimmy and Amy is foolish I know about her ben in Superman the movie but I was no fan of Superman and the character Jayne Tottman played in Superamn the movie was called Bryony.I have a strong feeling Jayne Tottman like many child actors has got out of the acting profession and is now in a more regular job.

@AintBigAintClever Well i was a kid when i first saw it in school i did actually think that they were killed bu tnow that im a bit older now i relise it wasnt the case but what bloody good acting and the Jimmy frizbee one was the best one but it got the message accross.
@jbclaret1983 Very well made, could easily have been "Hey kid, here's a fiver, go fetch that frisbee while we film it. Dangerous? Oh no, it's all turned off..."
The version showing Jimmys trousers burning is not, one I remember very vividly I always remember Jimmy getting fatally electrocuted and Amy his sister screaming in horror poor girl.Amy would have been traumatised for a long time after this event.
Haven't seen this full version for 30 years. Used to avoid ITV Saturday morning TV in case this came on. Did we kids really dress like that in the late 70s? And at 7:34 did we really have wallpaper like that then as well??
Substations are scary since they Hum with Electricity. It's like they hum Stay Away Stay Alive and since I Live near a Power Plant, I do. take my advice STAY AWAY AND STAY ALIVE
I personally think in the video involving the lad Jimmy getting electrocuted while trying to get the frisbee back for his sister Amy, the comments that Amy is a murderer are very strong and not an opinion I hold with one bit . Amy gave her brother Jimmy silly advice admittedly, but Jimmy was the one daft enough to go into the substation to get the frisbee for Amy. I think Amy being called a bitch is very harsh ,she did,nt tell Jimmy to go and kill himself . Jimmy should have stood his ground
Since the first victim was only knocked out by the shock and the second was badly burned, I had a bad feeling about what would happen to the third kid. D:
But I guess skirting the sensitive issue of death wouldn't make the message as strong as it is, even if it's being told by a cartoon owl and a robin. :)
Since the first victim was only knocked out by the shock and the second was badly burned, I had a bad feeling about what would happen to the third kid. D:
Says a lot for this short film that they were still hawking it round schools in 1989 when I was in junior school, though being kids at least some of our attention was lost in giggling at the flares they were wearing.
I thought power lines these days are coated with an insulator?
Someone recently crashed on my street corner and knocked down one of the street lamps that carried a power line. It was at night, and when I went to check out the accident I accidentally bumped it because it was near the ground. It didn't shock me but I can tell you my heart skipped a few thousand beats when I realized I accidentally bumped a power line.
Either that or there was no power being sent through the line, I don't know.
street lamps will be feed from underground and so will have insolated cable (probably normal mains 230v single phase) over head lines are un-insolated so they can get the cooling effect ot the air.
its really stupid choice acting towards the end, the policeman tells the woman that her daughter died on the way to hospital, and the mothers initial reaction is about the bicycle????
Those boys putting the entire town out of electricity, just from simply striking only one pylon is actually no exaggeration as far as possible outcomes from doing that. Where i live, in bournemouth, in 2005, a junkyard caught fire, and the flames from the junkyard severed the wires of the pylon that was above it, and it put the entire district out of electricity for about 6-8 hours. Luckily tho it happend at 11am, and not at night time.
I think the electricity board names not being visible was simply to show that "this could be anywhere" - the boards were regionally organised, as well as there being a national grid - although not as extensive as today's.
I saw this 30 years ago this month (Feb 2009) and I remember being completely freaked out by it. Watched it for the first time last year, and now I think it's one of the best PIF's around. The best characters in it, are Owl and Robin. : )
@ldge I must say the way Jimmy is fatally electrocuted, in an electrical substation full of dangerous live electrical apparatus and burnt to toast taught me a vital lesson stay well away from electrical substations and also electricity pylons if I lost a frisbee or a toy of any kind in an electrical substation I would not attempt to retrieve it myself I would leave it and buy another toy. In the case of Jimmy he risked his life, and died pointlessly his sister Amy who saw him die was very upset
@Homerball667 The girl Amy who told Jimmy to go into the substation is not a murderer, Amy is foolish but Jimmy did go into the substation and got fatally electrocuted and fried silly boy. It is often the case someone is led astray but the person who is led astray is responsible for their own actions.
I remember seeing this in middle school!! I also remember them as p.i.f's on tv, but not the last one with the boy throwing the chain at the pylon. Was that one ever shown as a p.i.f on tv like the rest?
I remember watching this at school, and seeing the bit where the kids legs are on fire, which isn't in the version of that clip that was shown on TV. Freaked me out, big time!
although i had nightmares after id seen them video at school the images were hard hitting and very serious they should bring this video back and show the whole 10 minutes of this on the BBC and ITV as well
i remember watching this film when i was 9 or 10 at school it taught me not 2 go any were near plyons and substations i felt sorry for the lad who went 2 get the frisbie on the orders of his sister and ended up being hit by 66,000 volts hoped his sister felt gulty afterwards
R u scared of pylons? I used to go to an infant school and next to the school was a pylon on the field. I remember me and my whole class going to that pylon.
I take it we call the "overhead power lines" Telegraph Poles, or am I getting a bit mixed up with something else?? Has anyone got the "new" lot of these things in their area?
The insulators on these ones are a bit bigger and longer in size, almost identical to the ones on Pylons, albeit shorter in comparison to them plus they stick upwards?
This is good filmmaking at its worst. The images, along with the with the sound(The occasional "BZZAP!" making you jump, getting your attention), are meant to shock(nice choice of words) I'd imagine this movie would scare the bejesus out of most children, painting the picture that a substation is a metal monster, throwing bolts at all who dare enter. I'd dare say there probably wasn't all that many substation accidents after this was made.
I think so too, we were shown a video like this but not this actual one and it scared us senseless, I dont get why someone would want to go in a substation, they look SO scary.
Does anyone know where that Substation PIF was filmed or where the substation is? It seems that particular one has managed to achieve "A-List" status, with the amount of times it was broadcast.
You are right on the nose, Simon. It is indeed the 132Kv HV Substation, also known as Sovereign Substation, feeding Eastbourne into the NG as well as supplying a partial downstep switch facility (132Kv/33Kv) to Willingdon.
you notice the electricity board for some reason at the time taped out their name on the fences as the engineer gives the ballback?! Dont know why! Wasnt as if they were in breach of advertising regulations lol!!
Technically they could have been. This video was broken down into a set of PIF's, or Public Information Films, which were sometimes shown on the BBC, which as you may or may not know, has a strict no advertising policy.
These days they would be in breach of health and safety never mind advertising regulations for using a sub station without the correct authority! I lost count how many times I heard the words "risk assessment" in y head watching this! its easy to forget in this risk assessment culture that we live in today that Health and Safety was just as much an issue back then as it is today but it just seems we make more of a song and dance about it now. Shame though that they still don't show this one!
I don't know about anyone else, but i think we should ditch the current PIFs and replace them with the sort like this one. These were more realistic and really sent the message across, compared to today's one which don't seem to have the same effect. Presumably this one came out before I was born, but when I was growing up in the 80s & 90s PIFs like this scared the living daylights out of me!
These days, most substations are protected by an electronic fence, well two that I know of are. We pass one on the way to Asda, my eight year old sister says the buzzing noise scares her, and the station is on the other side of the road, but buzzes loudly enough to scare kids.
@scorchx3000 Ah yes, Power Fence. Try climbing it and you get a nice little taster of what's inside. A 50,000 volt pulse every 1.2 seconds if I remember correctly. Like a cattle fence but nastier.
This film always used to freak me out as a child. If it was meant to be super-scary for kids, it certainly worked pretty well.

you notice the electricity board for some reason at the time taped out their name on the fences as the engineer gives the ballback?!

Yeah, nowadays they dont show you what could happen if you play near substations or powerlines. i say bring them back!

@keiranhancock

FYI the clip with Jimmy has the same suspense as does RESCUE 9-1-1- which aired on April 18, 1989
