    so amazing

  • What are those guys in the background (the more chant stuff) saying? Is it in latin?

  • @noahperkins96 yes. it is in latin.

  • Also check out James Steven's version done by the Piano Guys (on cello) ! Like this YouTube here, definitely put on the headphones. Laptop speakers do not do these justice. And crank em' loud. You blow out your ears on stupid rock, this is a far better reason. Look up on YouTube - "Nearer My God to Thee (for 9 cellos) Steven Sharp Nelson"

And James (the arranger of this for VP), You are worthy of being with the original hymnmasters, the Flowers sisters.

  • Love Vocal Point. And I love their arrangement and performance of this song!

  • I have single-handedly upped the watch counter on this song by at least 20. And I've been linking it to everyone I know.

  • 176

  • @TrueSpartan177 I love this song! (And your name. I

m guessing you tried 117 and it was taken?)

  • Free replay buttons, anyone? 00:00, 00:00, 00:00!

  • That bass is orgasmic......that guy can sing so freakin low!!

  • I wish there was a "love" click-button.

  • so.... I don't get it... what do people dislike about us "mormons"? do they hate that we're good people? and that we try to do good? helping people is wrong? being nice is wrong? being chaste? not doing bad things is wrong?

  • @TrueSpartan177 Would you (or anyone else) know what that monument is? Just wondering. Thanks!

  • what's the other song in the other language they're singing? it's beautiful....

  • I wanted to see what the latin part in english was, so I put it through Gtranslate, and the result was amazing: The moment of death the powers of heaven to me. Not fear God's help for ever. Direct us, Lord, to the August through narrow. All my song shall be Near my God, to Thee, Direct us, Lord, to the August through narrow. Higher than they go to the stars! (repeat) Love this song. :)
  • @DaneAgathon You can get a better translation by just clicking the show more button above. :)

  • This guy sings higher than like all of the altos in our choir. Ridic.

  • OMG THIS IS SICK!!! This is the one of the best acapella pieces i have ever heard...and it's in Latin :-D

  • I would like to dedicate this song for Mr. Steve Jobs. the great man of the century. God bless his soul.

  • Perfect.....

  • no argument . best voices out of anyone ever herd. GHS SEMINARY

  • these are some wonderful voices singing a piece very well and it's completely impressive... but you mormons are still craaaazy!

  • Awesome song. I'm going to rework it a bit simpler for our church a cappella group. Pity they're not pronouncing 'caelitus' correctly.

  • @igitur1978 That completely depends on whether you are speaking Classical or liturgical Latin.

  • Oh my gosh. I am so gonna try to join this group when I transfer to BYU provo after my mission!

  • Oh my freaking gosh, I love this song! GO BYU VOCAL POINT!!! Anyone who doesn't like this is, no offense, in need of hearing aides. Just as stated by keithasan75

  • thanks for the upload man. i love this song.(:

  • Hooookay. I love reading comments on this video, but I hate hate hate seeing religious discussion. I posted the video because the piece is one of the best acapella bits I know, not because I'm religious. (I'm atheist actually.) Enjoy the music without analyzing it too much yeah? It actually makes the piece far more enjoyable.

  • @wowdanalise The problem with that theory is that God isn't a deity, He has a body and actually exists as a physical being. If we all stopped believing that Neptune is really there in our Solar System, would it cease to exist?

  • One word..."Beautiful." I'm not trying to start an argument, but if you dislike this you either can't hear or you are so completely tone deaf, you don't understand what you're listening to.

  • I imagine the army of God's angels fighting Satan's army, and just out right whopping up on them like nobody's business!

  • beautiful

  • He holds that one note for 24 frgn counts. That's absolutely amazing.

  • The bass vox in this group is amazing.

  • so good D: and yeah, its 7/8

  • is there any way to get the sheet music for this?

  • we used this song for our marching band show of 2010 and i had the solo part on the saprano sax...i loved playing such a beautifull song...i almost cried every time i performed it because i love playing to our creator

  • Does anyone know what time signature this is in? I have been trying to figure it out for a while now.

  • @justbeingthatguy

It alternates between 4/4 and 7/8.

  • @justbeingthatguy

    Sounds like 7/8. 12 12 123 12 12 123.....this pattern starts at 0:53.

  • @Brivixxycej8 It most certainly is 7/8. It took me a while to figure it out, and I'm in university for conducting.

  • awesome - love it

  • Got chills @ 2:40.... This is truly amazing. I can't believe I've had this in my watch later pile for so long...

  • duh, winning.

  • que lindo perfeito isso mesmo Deus merece o melhor .gabi

  • Thank you. This is beautiful, powerful, and moving. It reminds me of sunrise.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm pretty sure it's impossible to make a more powerful arrangement than this.

  • I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS SONG!!! And not by the words so much as the chords. Oh my goodness, first hundred times I listened to it I cried! I LOVE IT!!!

  • amazing. I absolutely love this rendition! You are amazing! :)

  • Nothing but voices.

  • Is there a piano playing, or are there some reallllly deep voices in this?

  • @daileydevotion No, they are all voices. But yeah, some true bass there

  • @TheAlexanderRabah The basses are so deep and beautiful here that it makes my hair stand on end. I'm serious.

  • *o*

I can't even describe the felling I have right now.

This is my favorite hymn and it just got better. I seriously feel like crying right now because this song is so beautiful.

  • That was fantastic! Why are they so good?! Haha

  • hermosa himno lo mejorr se sientee el espiritu deveras gracias por el videoooo lo mejorrr!!!!1

  • the first time i have ever heard them was at the start of my mission....a year and a half ago in the MTC! ^.^

  • Best acapella song I've ever heard! Just awesome!

  • This sounds great, guys! I love the arrangement!!

  • Wow.. damn.. nice solo vocals there.. damn..

  • if you are religious appreciate the message behind this song- the lord watches over us always. he will guide us to heaven if we but put our trust in him. if you are not religious appreciate the beauty of a song performed perfectly and appreciate the beauty of their voices and how well they sing.

  • This is beautiful- and boo on haters; don't focus on the religion if you aren't religious. Focus on the voices.

  • Amazing! The base is so powerful i love it! Go Cougars! :)

  • Glad to see that this finally getting up there with the number of views. Sadly though that will attract the kind of people who will start flame wars about religion. Arguing on youtube is like winning the special olympics. You may win but at the end of the day you are still retarded. (no offense to those who are challenged).

  • @Cuchulainn131 Truth. Guys, just enjoy the music, be smarter than the average YouTuber.

  • @Cuchulainn131

How is that supposed to not offend those who are challenged?

  • @Cuchulainn131 Poorly said. And there's no way that can be construed as anything but offensive to some.

  • @Cuchulainn131 Bad analogy brother.

It's like wrestling with a pig, whether you win or lose you still end up dirty...

  • That's some powerful music.

  • thanks for posting the sheet music to this awesome arrangement

  • I don't think I've watched a single video as much as I have this one.

  • This is my all time favorite song. Ever.

  • I am speechless.

  • Gänsehaut .... :)

  • I hate to make this all sad and mushy, but my friend just died in a car wreck and this song has helped me a lot these past days. Thanks BYU.

  • @raindrops2rainbows im sorry bout ur friend :(

  • It's a shame that religions such as that practiced by the ancient Greeks and

Romans (before the adoption of Christianity) have died out. The deities in such worships were clever, astute, and often violent. The Norse gods would be another example but they still carry a small and diminishing following.

So much better then the fruitcake god of the Islamic, Judaic, and Christian religions(each evolved from the same events and tales but and are differently matured expressions of the same god).

  • @wowdanalise One could say that since those other gods DID "die out" as you have said, along with their cultures, that they weren't actually REAL after all. As for the God of the Judeo-Christian religion, well, He's still going strong so far. I guess you and I will meet at the end, and see if there is any fruitcake. (Hopefully not. Nobody likes that particular dessert. It's harder to get rid of than zucchini bread. LOL)

  • @Qwinkly3

While your comments about desert are very true, It's sad that a deity only exists so long as it's worshipers continue to practice. According to this rule, if all worshipers ended their glorification instantaneously, all gods would cease to exist giving reason to believe they were none but ideas all along.

I need to go to sleep, have a good night scrubs.

  • @wowdanalise If you don't share our faith, don't go off about why we're wrong. Let us worship in peace, enjoy this music by this amazing group, and move on. Just because you don't agree with what we believe, doesn't mean you have to right to bash us because we don't agree on some doctrines with one another. We can agree to disagree. Please, just enjoy the music; don't focus on bashing everyone who actually appreciates the message it brings.

  • @luvfldhcky6

I was just putting your comment about now dead religions to work on still existing ones, not trying to bash any faith in particular. I'm sorry if my words were taken too harshly.

I have always believed that people would be happier if they submitted to blind faith. While science brings revealing light to the world, the knowledge that I am made of coiled up strings, and those made of small electrically charged balls is altogether depressing. I wanted to work in the word dismal.

  • @wowdanalise I understand. Thank you for clarifying. I appreciate it.

  • VIctory! I have finally mastered the Latin and can keep up with them ! Whoo hoo! (I still want to know - Where does this Latin text come from? Is it another hymn? Part of a liturgy?)

  • What were the 4 dislikes listening to?

  • Am I going to sound like an idiot if I ask where does this Latin text come from? Is it another hymn? Part of a liturgy?

  • I always go back to this song when I really want to be moved by some really good music. Thanks BYU.

  • calming...thanks..

  • Man this is so clean! Love this song!

  • Superb!

  • AAhh Amazing!!! <3

  • @NoFuturePete

Uneducated statements such as the one you posted on this video are the cause of your username.

  • Can I marry this boy? Haha :)

  • @titsandbeermakemefat I think you mean Bb. (Bass clef) But even so, it's amazingly low.

I was impressed by the final tenor note personally. My jaw literally dropped to the floor... okay maybe not literally, but it was pretty close.

  • @NoFuturePete Whoa...hold on a minute. You can't possibly compare this to a teenage-BS-drama-filled series T.V. show. Good to know you have a personal opinion but if it's "pretty gay", you make a version of this and post it :)

  • this brought God nearer to me...

wait, hes always right next to me....

it brought me closer to him...

  • Doing this in choir. Best song to learn ever..

  • I've been looking for the music for doing with my choir. i only found the 9 part male arrangement. Is this the only one out there or do you have a different arrangement. I'm going crazy right now because I really love this song but don't have the abilities to do a nine-part guy version. Thanks so much!

  • Very impressed!!!!

  • I can't stop listening to it! Love these guys. :)

  • Thanks for uploading...thanks guys of Vocal Point for using your talents; you have blessed my life personally. You just made the world a better place by singing this song. Please never stop sharing.

  • I love this version of this song! It is amazing!

  • No matter how bad life can get for me sometimes, I just listen to this song and I know everything will be ok. Thank you so much for uploading.

  • Can't stop listen to this... !!!

  • i love this song.

  • THIS IS AWESOME. I THINK IT WOULD SOUND SO MUCH BETTER WITHOUT THE ENGLISH LYRICS. JUST USE THE LATIN AND IT WILL BLOW PEOPLES MINDS

  • That was epic :)

  • ...dear god..I am speakless and bow down ****

  • my bishop/close friend has recently passed. thank you for this. it has helped me cope.

  • When the bass sings the low Bflat, BELOW LOW C, my heart leaps. Incredible. I've watched a video response, and it was terrible. These guys are incredible.

  • Oh, my gosh, this song is incredible! The soloist's High C was superb! Favorite!

  • James Stevens is the soloist AND the arranger of this hymn. He has been directing Vocal Point for the past 6 years and arranges a lot of their music. James also recorded and mixed their NON-STOP CD. One of my most favorite James Stevens arrangements is found on the new MERCY RIVER CD which James produced. His arrangement of "Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing" will also blow your mind. Yes...I'm a fan of BYU Vocal Point and James Stevens.

  • Deo Adjuvante Non Timendum...a beautiful phrase...and it makes a beautiful tattoo, This song is incredible

  • You guys should really hear Fountain Valley High School's a capella group do this. It's awesome!

  • You guys should really hear Men of the Mill sing this song, it's beautiful.

  • Holy flippin' cow.

  • Absolutely breathtaking. It's so beautiful....

  • Absolutely stunning.

  • Is there any place to buy this? I love this arrangement and was so bummed when the video of vocal point doing this song was taken off. I need to make sure that I don't go without it in the future.

  • @Mikeyondadrums

You can buy the MP3 on Amazon for $0.99. Look for Vocal Point's album titled "nonstop".

  • BYU is the best school ever.

  • Wonderful

  • Love this song. So excited our marching band will be playing it for our show, with a Sax on the saprano voice. Wow this is gonna rock!!

  • The best way to make a bad day good

  • I have been watching, well listening to this over and over... no better way to make a bad day good

  • i love being lds and going to byu!

  • ...dear god...so great *****

  • Geeze people! Auto-tuned or not this song is beautiful.

I'm sure "being nearer to god," means to argue the topic of auto-tuning. Goodness.

  • @sexynat50 Its not autotuned, i've heard them live

  • my acapella group is singing this piece at a school talent show. No auto-tune needed. We'll see how it turns out.

  • i need the chords for this song...haha

  • ...dear god...speakless !!

  • The soloist owns, but its hard to tell how well the rest of the choir did, I mean, its not hard to sound good when you run everything through Auto-Tune...

  • Therefore, we are to assume they can't actually sing anything like that? Beyond that, though, it's the (stunning) arrangement itself which we are meant to enjoy.

  • I agree completely with that last bit, but you definitely took what I said out of context. Nowhere did I imply that they couldn't sing, but whether or not you can sing, auto-tune can improve vocal quality measurably. I would have preferred a little less production on it so I could hear what they really sounded like. But I guess that's what the live version is for. (Which I HAVE heard)

  • Forgive the defensive conclusion-jumping.

  • @m8cct TROLLIN' LIKE A PRO.

  • whatever dude, I was just giving my opinion on the song's production. I'm just wondering why a group as talented as Vocal Point felt the need to use auto-tune in an a cappella track. If you can find anywhere where I insulted Vocal Point or made any inflammatory remarks, please point them out.

  • everyone uses auto tune. no one is ever perfect on pitch. and if this is a song that is listened to over and over then it needs to be perfect. human voices aren't metal strings or bronze tubes that are ridgid and dont change shape easy. small things like tension and stress change the tones and pitches drastically in the human voice

  • Not everyone uses auto tune, nor does anyone NEED to use auto-tune or be perfect, even in a recording. There's beauty in the imperfection of the human voice in its natural state, without auto-tune, that I believe should be embraced. I don't mind auto-tune being used for a specific effect, but I don't like it when it is used subtly by artists to perfect a vocal performance, they're not being true to themselves.

  • I feel as if you are being too idealistic here. Go listen to an unmixed, unedited version of an acapella song yourself. Over and over. Then compare it with the mixed/edited/master version. If you dont think the latter is better I don't know what to tell you. They aren't less of artists because they are cheating. Clearly they have a great performance when they sing live, so whats the big deal if they have the best product they can have in the studio?

  • I don't advocate that a track is completely unmixed, but I personally prefer to hear actual unprocessed vocals over auto-tuned vocals, at least, when it comes to talented singers. I think it's a matter of subjectivity, which is really kind of pointless to argue over. It's the same reason many people prefer naturally grown fruit over GMO fruit, or find plastic surgery to be ugly.

  • @imwithoutwax Hmmm...explain perfect pitch. I beg to differ.

  • @THSChoir perfect pitch meaning the exact numerical frequency of vibrations in the air that make up a musical pitch. what do you differ with me on

  • great consistency, amazing song!!

  • simply amazing

  • absolut geil....

    Thank you for posting !!

  • we do the intro of this song as a warm up in chorus... sooooooo epic.

  • Amazing Song! thanks Vocal Point you guys are cool oh and if dan is around, your friend elder cooper is serving in my ward and he gave me your band to check out sme kool church songs:) sweet brother

  • This monument, in Andrews Park, Southampton, England, remembers and lists the 35 ship engineers who remained at their posts as the Titanic broke up and sank.

    The inscription reads:

Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his live for his friends

To the memory of the engineer officers of the R. M. S. "Titanic" who showed their high conception of duty and their heroism by remaining at their posts.

    15th April 1912

Erected by their fellow engineers and friends throughout the world.

  • i dont think you can listen to this song too many times. it is sooo gorgeous and has an amazing message.. seriously makes me cry.

  • This is the best song that they have ever put out, its so explosive and incredibly in tune, just beautiful....

  • Wow! That is just plain amazing! They are definitely one of my favorite acappella groups!

  • Comment removed

  • ear-gasmic

  • HOLY WOW. if this song doesn't give you chills i dont know what does.

  • Too bad they didnt go on the singoff, they would have absolutely dominated

  • @Thelazyone55 there are many groups that would have dominated!! it seems they picked reeaally amateur groups to perform

  • I'm sure there are soooo many great acapella groups that would have been amazing...Idk if BYU's would've been allowed to go though, they're like 3 peat national champs or something like that...I think.

  • no, the only won once, which is still freaking impressive. I think the only group to have ever won it more than once is the UC Men's Octet.

  • That is true music

  • omg Omg OMG!!! THAT WAS AWSOME

  • Depth @ 2:40 is mindblowing.

  • This song is so comforting and BYU has done such a great job. I keep listening to this song over and over.

  • This is absolutely breath taking. i cant help but listen to it over and over again. thank you so much vocal point. you lift my soul
