  • How do I record a video with sound on my SD780IS? Please respond.

  • why cant i hear the sound of the video when i play it back on the camera..i can see the video i just cant hear it?

  • @bangon9 - I'm wondering the same thing. My Mute is off.

  • @bangon9 You may have to bump up the audio in the setting menu.

The volume of the speakers is not very loud. I was bummed out about the weak in-camera audio playback.

  • What Video editing program do you use for this camera? Windows movie maker and videospin dont seem to work with my camera

  • can you use Zoom when recording movies in HD ?

  • @youyou501 No you can't use zoom while recording in HD

  • This is the Canon IXUS 100is in the UK

  • what camera are you using to record this video ?

  • @Pspmpression Canon PowerShot S3 IS.

  • HOW DO I IMPORT IT INTO I MOVIE PLEASE RESPOND

  • @dude07x You can either download directly from your camera via USB cable or card reader.

  • @LEXPIX can u please make a tutorial im begging u! please just make it private wiTh me i need a lot of help please man im begging

  • Can i record videos of myself and post them on YouTube with this?

  • @JedDeTV You certainly can.

  • does the camera pause? & i heard the audio was horrible. like a crunchy soft quiet noise. or is it decent?

  • @LovePuppy28 Not sure of the pausing but the audio is pretty good. i did not notice any crunching sounds, although I did notice the audio pause for a split second now and then. Not sure if it is the memory card or what. I don't' have this camera anymore so i can't test it.

  • Hi LexPix. I already bought a 16GB micro sd card and adapter. Restarting another video shouldn't be a problem. And I also bought an extra battery just in case. I appreciate the help. Cheers.

  • it wouldnt load for me ;( Also, is the SD card required?

  • Hi LexPix. I would really appreciate your help. As a new teacher, we're required to purchase a Kodak zi8 video camera for our tutoring sessions. I know my sd780is can also record in 720p HD quality. My only concern is that on canon.com it says only compatible upto 4GB memory, whereas your video presents with a 8, 16 and 32GB sd card. Have you inserted that these sd cards and does they work? Also, do you know how long the sd780is can do videos? We're required to record at least 30min. Thanks!

  • @yank285 It will record up to 4GB at a time. You can restart the video and fill another 4GB on a larger card. About a half hour is what you can expect to record on a single battery charge. Extra batteries would be a good investment.

  • This is a great camera, I also recently bought a Canon SLR..the Rebel XS...all of the components are made in Japan :D even the instructions are printed in Japan, instead of China...or Vietnam or something.

  • Hi again LEXPIX

Do you mind if you tell me the SSD780IS is assembled in japan? This is the last fact I need to get my own one and start to enjoy it's great features.

    Greetings and Thanks

  • Not sure, I just sold it to a friend of mine.

I too usually look for products made in Japan as their quality control tends to be better than "other" countries.

  • @alienproject94 Mine says made in china.

  • Hi again LEXPIX, Do you mind if you tell me if the SD780IS is made in Japan? I have read certain opinions in forums that is true. Can you confirm me this please? Is the last point to get this awesome camera. Thanks

  • thanks for the review. i own a rebel t1i and was looking for something small for quicking shoot. i picked the canon sd780is from bestbuy for $150 with RZ points. what kind of SD card class do you recommend? class 6, 10??

  • Good price you go it for. I use the SanDisk Extreme III cards that work just fine.

  • hey not sure if anyone has asked this yet but what do u mean by a faster SD card? is it faster in terms of transferring pictures onto your computer? or what? thanks

  • The higher data transfer speed cards do seem to make a slight difference both in writing to and reading from the card both shooting and downloading to your computer. The camera is the bottleneck most of the time.

  • you know, i've found a couple reviews of this camera where they are showing the edge, purple fringe, and blurry corners and such, saying how this camera is nice, but image quality doesnt compare to certain other cameras.. but you know what, ive tried those other cameras, and this camera, and this camera (most canons) by far take better, more colorful pictures. so who cares if the edges are blurry.. just looking at you scroll thru your images reminded me of how SWEET the images turn out.

  • The sd780 has been on sale recently, and a ton have been sold.

Price, size and simplicity for the average user like myself seem to be the driver.

I paid $179. The ultra compact camera/video is where the market seems to be going.

There are other combos that maybe slightly better, but not at this price or size.

I was looking at Sony, another Canon and a Panasonic, but size and price won out.

BTW, nice MB riding. In my younger days, I did some trail riding.

  • Yup, for the money, this is a killer camera. The size and the fact that it shoots in 1280x720HD is nice. Their newer compacts seem to drop the HD in favor of the SD 640x480.

  • i've got this camera..i quite like it...but i have got a problem while video shooting...ii mean it records video but when i play it,,there will be no sound,So could u tell me wat's the problem?

  • No idea. If playing back on your camera, you should hear sound, but the built-in speaker isn't very loud. You may need to crank up the volume on the camera.

When playing back on a computer, you should hear sound. If not, check your computer volume settings and make sure your software is updated to see if that helps.

  • Are you playing back video with Windows Media Player or Quicktime? I had audio problems using WMP. If your using quicktime make sure it's the latest version. Like Lex I'm using Vegas to edit with and I typically render videos in AVI.

  • Hello. Great looking videos with your Canon sd780is.

Are you on a pc or mac?

    What converter/codecs are you using?

Are you viewing on WMP or Quicktime?

I have this camera on order and it will be here in less than 2 weeks. I'm trying to run down some software that will perform high quality conversions to either avi/wmv.

You would think that either Canon, Sony, Sanyo etc.. would provide some excellent software for their hardware.

It seems to be one of the main complaints.

  • Thanks, I'm using Sony Vegas on a PC converting to Windows Media file and uploading directly to YouTube.

Yeah, I never use bundled software with anything anymore.

It's a good camera, but the eye of the photographer/videographer makes all the difference since there are better choices out there for video now.

  • heeey same here but it doesnt seem to work the audio is way off. like ill be talking and my mouth wont even be moving. :/ so you import your mov file , then convert it, then edit it , all of these steps on sony vegas?

  • this was so helpful - thanks, lexpix!

  • You're welcome. Glad you found it useful.

  • image stablizer doesn't work is there a way to turn it on

  • Press the MENU button then scroll all the way down to the next page to "IS MODE" and make sure it is set to ON.

It should be set to ON by default.

  • LEX, is the flash pretty bad for night shots??

    it looks awfully weak.

  • Yeah, it's pretty pathetic, especially outdoor. I try not to use it. That and major red eye, like most compact point and shot cameras due to the flash being so close to the lens axis.

Now with that said, it is good for fill flash when you want to give it a little more light in the shadows shooting outdoors in daylight.

  • can you or can you not zoom in/out while recording video???

  • You can. But it is digital zoom, meaning less quality than optical zoom.

You can however use the optical zoom in regular picture taking mode.

  • Hi , so I just got this camera a few days ago , & I'm having trouble figuring out how to edit and then upload my videos onto Youtube. Could you tell me how ? (:

    Thank youuu.

  • @tareesax3

the video output from your camera is in .mov format, which means you can use quicktime to watch your videos, but quicktime doesn't let you edit your videos. i usually use windows movie maker for my simple video editing, windows movie maker wont edit movies in .mov format. i too have a canon camera and im hunting down for a video editing program myself, i finally found a program called Magix movie edit pro

  • this review was very helpful.

    thankyu=]

im trying to decide whether to get this camera or the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 & DMC-FT1 .

    im confused guys.

i want a camera that overall takes good pix and is slim.

but the lumix happens to be shockproof and waterproof, but im unsure if it takes good pictures...urghhh this is soo hard for me=/ i c myself getting this one tho a gold one =].

where did u go to buy yurs?

  • Yeah, camera shopping can be daunting with all the features and what not. I got mine off of Amazon, good deals there.

I'd look into the New Canon s90 which is even better than this one, a little bulkier, but nice improvements to this model.

  • Yup, P mode let's you shoot pics and I think very basic color themes/swapping is available. I don't use any of those features.

  • can you shoot pictures in a 16:9 ratio? if so, how many megapixels?

    thanks

  • No, there is no "wide screen" crop mode. You can always crop it to that dimension in any photo editing software if you want.

  • but under the image size, there is an option "wide"

    at 9:26

  • Ahh, okay. Yeah, it does let you crop into the image, but it does not change the sensor resolution. The LX3 does let you do that though.

  • Does this model offer the time lapse feature?

  • Nope, they omitted the intervalometer.

  • Excellent video review! I'm ready to buy now!! Canon should definitely pay you for your work. You provide more information than any website out there! THANK YOU!

  • Thanks, I appreciate it. Glad it was useful.

  • Also, is it true that this camera has a "3rd flash" option for when you're in dim lighting?

  • I'm not familiar with the 3rd flash option. There is however a slow sync mode which tries to balance the light from the flash with the background lighting in a low light situation. You'd need to use a tripod for this since the shutter remains open a little while longer after the flash has gone off.

  • Ahh that could be what they meant by the 3rd flash option. thanks. =)

  • how long can each video last with the Canon Powershot SD780IS?

  • Up to 4GB per video clip. or 30 minutes in the HD 1280x720. You can restart the video recording and continue on.

So one hour of video is possible with an 8GB card in half hour increments, however, your battery will die before you fill the 8GB card.

An extra battery (Canon brand.) is highly recommended.

  • can u recommend a battery? i'm afraid of getting one that wont be compatible with the camera? are there different sizes?

  • Get the Canon NB-4L. This is the Canon factory brand that comes with the camera. I use nothing else.

  • cute and sweet, i want one. :)

  • Thank you for going into such detail and explaining all the functions.Very thorough and very helpful. I just bought this camera and am really excited about starting to use it now!

  • You're welcome. It is quite a capable camera for being so small.

I think Canon should give me a kick back for my hard work. LOL

  • Hi sorry for any offense, but this is 1 of the lamest review I m seeing ..

  • I sorry 2, maybe you make good 1, yes?

  • hmmm.. i m not 1 to make review on this cam , i was goint to buy this cam and searching for review @ youttube .. your review didn;t do a justice to this camera .. between i got this cam today after my last powershot 1000 flash stopped working .. let;s hope this cam comes to be a good buy for me ..

  • I wonder if it does 640x480 60 fames per second.

  • Nope, 60fps is not available.

  • Thanks for the info sad news but thanks..

  • 60fps is not necessary. Broadcast quality video (eg what you see on TV is only 30fts)

  • True, but higher the fps, the smoother fast action seems to play back.

  • That is not true in actual fact 30 frames gets flickery on playback.

60 frames is perfect flow of really smooth framing but unfortuatly it only has a resolution of 320 which is crap...on cameras.

They should do a 640x480 60 frames and a 720P 60 frams for perfect smooth clips.

You see when you use memory it's not like using free flow video tape which at 30 frames it is actually fine and smooth..

They work differently thats why you need more frames for memory chips to be smooth.

  • i mean video samples)

  • Hi there..

Well, with this video review and another ones I've read in other sites, I'm convencing myself to buy this great camera, one thin I noticed was that you used a 16GB SD card. In the specs, is [suposely] 8GB at max capacity supported... The camera can manage 16GB without any problem?

I didn't have a good experience with my Olympus FE-280, [I sold it], so, I think my next step could be this camera. Any idea to get the best pictures with this one? Thanks for your help. Greetins!

  • It reads my 32 GB card with no problems. You jut have to play around with it to get the desired effect with this camera.

  • Just got this camera today. Love the sheer small, but still controllable, size of it. I'm gonna bring this wherever I go cus I can! Plus the video is awesome from a camera this small! *whew Still amazed by it.

  • Good Camera i Like it.

  • great vid lexpix! hav u heard of d new canon sd940?it has similar looks but with a 2.7 lcd, new menu and cost 300 bucks..which do you think is better?thanks for d infos man..hope to see your sample pics especially in low lighting..

  • I've heard of it but have no experience with it.

  • I plan on getting the 940 verison of this camera. Have you tested this with a high end card that can do 30MBPS? I would think that your regular standard card would never do a camera like this justice. I could not see it getting it's full potential without the best card

I am refering to a card like the Sandisk extreme 3

  • I use a couple of Extreme IIIs as shown in the video.

Often times the camera doe not take full advantage of the high speed card's full potential.

  • oh my i am really feeling jealous now. cant wait to have my own next week! im gonna get the red one.. juz curious.. how come in some place its called the canon ixus 100 and in some its the powershot sd 780.. they are juz the same right?

  • The Ixus is used for overseas models I think.

  • is there a 10 or more shots self timer with this camera?

  • No, you can only take one at a time. And there is no interval meter or "time lapse" feature.

  • You don't need high speed card unless you use for continues shooting in dslr.

  • Higher speed cards seem to yield smoother video than standard speed as well as the image coming up faster on the screen.

  • does it have a red eye reduction?

  • every camera does nowadays...

  • Does any one know what is the max Class SDHC card this camera is capable of? And what is better to buy with this SD/SDHC

  • I've used an 8GB card, but it maxes out at 4GB in terms of continuous recording.

  • Great review.

  • Thanks.

  • Does it normaly come with an SD card? Whats the memory on it if not?

  • I don't believe it does. Most cameras don't, but if they do, it is usually really small, usually less than 1MB.

I highly recommend a 4GB or higher high speed card, especially useful for video recording.

  • do u think this camera would be good for making a movie? like i know the quality of the video is great, i am just worried about the quality of audio!!! will it record voices without the hissing sound of the background?

  • I'd use a dedicated camcorder with microphone outputs and manual control for better results.

  • Thank you so much for this video! I have been looking into getting this camera and it was very helpful.

  • It's an awesome tiny camera that will take good images.

  • i just bought this on Amazon just 10mins ago! :) great review. i can't wait to get it!!!

  • Cool. You'll love it. Make sure to get an extra battery for it. Canon brand preferably.

  • is the battery it comes with not so good...?(doesn't hold charge...?)

and also, u wouldn't recommend using it for even close-up HD video?..

  • Battery that comes withis is excellent. Just get a spare since the battery life on a single charge is less than an hour. I always recommend the OEM brand battery over the cheaper, generic brands.

Close up HD video is fine, just make sure you stay in focus range of the macro.

  • I have the sd890is which takes AWESOME pictures under low light conditions, how does this camera compares to mine under low light?, im thinking about switching to this camera.

  • I haven't used the SD890IS, but looking at the specs, the slimmer 780IS may have similar performance, although it does use a newer processor, which may yield different results. The lens on the 780 is slightly wider, but does not zoom out as far as the 890. Both have the same maximum aperture of F 3.2. so in terms of light gathering from the lens should be the same.

  • thank you!!!

  • You're welcome.

  • hey can you zoom while reocrding?

  • You can zoom digitally, but I wouldn't recommend it since the image degrades due to heavy pixelation.

  • Thanks LEXPIX. Great overview. I just bought this camera today and I am looking forward to receiving it.

  • Cool. You'll love the small size which can go with you almost anywhere.

  • If you're taking video does it limit the length you can record video? Also, since it's hd video will it take a lot of memory card space??? Super informative video!

  • Yes, you are limited to up to 4GB per video clip. or 30 minutes in the HD mode according to the manual, which ever comes first. But you can restart the video recording and continue on.

  • Appreciate the comments, thanks.

  • great vid

  • This is the best review/overview of them all.

  • Thanks.

  • Why did you select the SD780 over others. And do you prefer the glass/lens of the Canons over the Sony/Carl Zeiss, Panasonic/Leica, Fujinon, etc. Also I think aperture settings vary with compacts, was this a factor in your purchase too? Thank you.

  • The small size and the 1280x720 HD video at 30fps was my main reasons for choosing this camera. Also the black is nice touch. I never cared for silver or bright colored cameras.

Most of the cameras in this category have similar image quality.
