I am so glad that so many people have hunted this down. I hope that fans take the time to check out the other clips on my channel. As well as more from this concert, there is stuff from Monk, Dizzy, Mies, Ornette, as well as some great British jazz from Victor ~Feldman, Bill LeSage and Tubby Hayes.
@peopleinsorrow As I had never seen film footage of him before, I was not 100 % sure in stating Vic Sproles. drjazz86's comment below has given me confidence that it is, however. The "S'Make It" album from 1966 that the Messengers were touring when this was taped features him. He worked extensively in Sun Ra's Intergalactic Arkestra with John Gilmore, and is from Chicago, where he recorded with Ira Sullivan, Red Rodney and Johnny Griffin.
For Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1966 the influence of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and Eric Dolphy are transparent. John Hicks was always on top of his game and this performance was no different. Gilmore, with the help of Blakey, was able to take his tenor sound up to new heights as Blakey cued Hicks and Morgan to change key structures. Lee Morgan was at the peak of his creativity driven only the way Blakey can do. Egyptian is performed here like no other.
Gilmore outside of Sun Ra's purview: Art Blakey: 'S Make It [nov. '64] /// Art Blakey: Are You Real ['65 - this date] /// Paul Bley: Turning Point [march '64] /// Andrew Hill: Andrew!!! [june '64] /// Andrew Hill: Compulsion!!! [oct. '65] /// McCoy Tyner: Today & Tomorrow [feb. '64] /// Elmo Hope: Hope from Riker's Island [aug. '63] /// Dizzy Reece: From in to out ['70] /// Chick Corea: Bliss ['67] [actually Pete LaRoca's date - Turkish Women At The Bath] + co-led date w/Clifford Jordan!!
Gilmore is an UNSUNG hero! Lee is at his best with is fantastic Constellation..a very heavy trumpet that was a must in the sixties...and Bu... Jesus Christ!!!!the piano is John Hicks?
@ganelio Actually it's a silver plated Conn 8B Artist model, it's got a smaller bell than the Connstellation and no 1st valve slide trigger/saddle. Freddie played one throughout most of the 60s and 70s as did Woody Shaw, definitely give one a try if you ever get the chance, once you play one you'll see why those cats chose it over the 38B Connstellation, I've got a '65 and I love it!
