The sandal-wearing umbrella is taken from Japanese myths, where just such a thing exists... it's what happens when an umbrella turns 100 years old. It grows an eye and a leg. Yeeeah, I don't get it.

The one-eyed umbrella wearing a sandal is a monster in Japanese mythology. Supposedly it floats into childrens bedrooms at night and steals them away.

It also turns up in Super Mario Land 2. Don't worry, though, until I found out where it got its origins I thought the developers had smoked a whole bunch of crack, too.
