Hi Phantom1946 My guess is that he never lost the love of performing, he just needed a reminder of what he missed. I think he put things in perspective with his illness, but there's a middle ground - he doesn't have to go to extremes like he did when he was younger in order to entertain. There is nothing like the buzz you get from performing in front of an audience. It will be interesting to see what kind of roles he's offered - clearly he wants more of a challenge than WOZ can provide
@bookworm7087 Oh yes, I'm very familiar with the buzz you get from doing a live performance, and I know he loves it too. I'm hoping he gets some good opportunities that will catch his fancy.
Phantom1946 (sorry, I don't know how to respond directly to your post), I'm glad as well. His voice always mesmerized me on the original cast recording CD, but it was only after the Phantom 25th concert that I got interested in his career as a whole. I'm going to London to see him in the Wizard of Oz (twice, including his final performance), but I suspect based on recent comments that we shall see him again. I hope so - there's nothing he can't do and do brilliantly. He's also so likeable.
@bookworm7087 He's very personable and yes, very likeable, and he does indicate he'll be doing some more in the future, We've been waiting for some years till he told us he would do the Wizard, and he obviously got back in the groove, again. He got thunderous applause when he came out at the Phantom 25 performance, as was noted in the writeups. There are a lot of his fans that are going multiple times to the Wizard to see him from the US and abroad.
The concert DVD is phenomenal. I see others below also agree, which I'm glad about. What a storyteller he is - he's truly gifted in that way. He doesn't just tell a story, he acts it out - the Gene Kelly story is priceless. I think some of those things are embellishments, but it doesn't matter - they are downright hilarious. I wish Americans knew more about him besides that he was the Phantom.
I heard this song for the first time a couple of months ago and now it's one of my all-time favorites. Michael sings this incredibly well - as he does everything. This version is on the ALW CD, but I do adore watching the concert/DVD version. He makes everything look so easy - he is able to bring out all the emotion without looking as if he's straining to do so.
@caviekim The key would make a difference in this case, as A4 is pushing it for the chest voice - I'm pretty sure both these singers only use chest voice in this song. Trying to sing a note right on the limit takes a lot more effort than singing one a tone below. From what I can hear Michael Ball has pretty decent lung power and he definitely sounds better technically to me.
there is no one that can sing this as well as michael crawford.my girlfriend when i was young had that as her favorite song when we split.[thats a long ,long time ago.]
i still love it . how is it a man that acts so stupid can have such a lovely voice.
@azaz09095 LoL, you explained how; Crawford is an ACTOR, Frank was just a role he played very well just as he actually became the Phantom; and he's a singer, and he can do just about anything, he's Sooo versatile.
@caviekim That's because it's in another key... Michael Ball sings a high A and Crawford is singing a high G... No way to compare them. Besides, Michael Ball has a better vocal technique.
I love Michael's rendition of this song. I have him doing this on his DVD "Live in Concert" and it's even better when you see him singing it. He also does Gethsemane in it, and it's mind blowing; the best I've ever heard. The emotion is palpable, he's liviing it as he sings it beautifully.
@thephantom1946 - I have his "Live in Concert" DVD too (as well as the CD), and I get chills every time I see/hear him sing "Gethsemane". He blows me away.
By far, it's my favorite Michael Crawford song and album/DVD! =)
@vShaede Same here, his DVD "Live in Concert" is just terrific. How about those standing ovations! The audience was was in the palm of his hand. He came out before the concert and talked to the audience and he was very nervous before he started, as it was his first concert after hip surgery from the injury in EFX in Las Vegas. Once he came back out after the intro, he was definitely in the groove again with his opening number of Gethsemene. Jaw dropping!
@ElkGroveNews I've noticed that Michael often conveys emotions in people. Be it reminding them of their childhood or of thoose they love or just of a time where they felt safe and happy. And.. I'm glad that i can help making people happy by posting some of his songs from time to time.. :)
@ElkGroveNews You are not alone in this. THis beautiful song was a favourite of my beloved Tess, who passed away in 2009. It always brings her back to me for a moment. Thnks to CharmedBalthazar for posting it.
The Best ! Better than Ball !

@bookworm7087 Crawford is the most versatile and talented actor/singer that I've come across. Glad you have discovered this living legend.

One of my favorite songs that Michael sings, he did a great job. His voice is beyond compare.

@caviekim its not your imagination, crawford can perform this song better than ball...

Is it just me or does Crawford hold that last note WAY longer than Ball ever did? Amazing.

That's because he's better.

@DTSDT What key it's in has nothing to do with how long you can hold it. That's sheer lung power, and Crawford can walk all over Ball in that arena.
caviekim 2 months ago 2
@caviekim
Not the same note. The original is a Bb and this is an Ab.
Nemtudommianevem 2 months ago
@caviekim Michael Crawford has a better technique using both the voice and breathing, so he can go on and on with ease
