This is a great review! Thanks, I was looking for an affordable wireless mic, but actually wanted 3 so up to 3 people can speak at a time. That leaves us with 3 unbalanced mini jacks at the stereo mini jack HV40 input. Do you know of a tripod mounted conversion box (not as expensive as beachtek or juicedlink) that will combine 3 inputs into 1 without much signal loss?
Do you have experience with some of the other wireless lavalier mics availabe on ebay at much cheaper prices? For instance, the Bolun WR-601 or the Pyle PDWM96? The Bolun amazingly has several listings for under a dollar!
@piper4seeformerly To see how the Bolun works, view the YouTube video 'Testing a Bolun WR-601 '. You'll see why the price is so low - it's pretty much worthless as a microphone.
I see the PlaySport gets a slightly better rating. Does it have the external mic port? If not, are there any other highly-rated cameras for under $200 I should look into? Thanks again.
@BethNovickpt The PlaySport has an external microphone port. The next camera up the price scale with an external microphone port is the Canon HF M40 - $349 at Amazon.
Bill, will this work with a Flip Cam? If not, what will? I'll be making exercise videos in 2012 and need better audio but want to avoid buying a new camera, if possible. Thanks for your help.
@BethNovickpt The Flip cameras do not have an external microphone port, so no external microphones will work with it. The Kodak PlayTouch and Zi8 cameras do have external microphone ports, and these will work with those.
@KLovelien The Panasonic HDC-SD90 does have a microphone in port, so you can use external microphones with that camera, including the wireless microphones reviewed above
Hey Bill, i have sony hdr sr7e and i am wondering if this'll fit my camcorder. I have been told that i need a hot shoe adaptor so that i can have universal mics to fit my camcorder. but will this one fit too?
@AriaTelevision According to the sony hdr sr7e user manual, it does have an external microphone port, so you would be able to use any external microphone, include the wireless ones shown in the above video. You do NOT need a hot shoe adapter unless you want to mount the microphone to your camera. For that, I'd recommend a $12.00 camera light bracket which attaches to the tripod screw.
Bill, Was the audio portion of this video cleaned up with software at all? I just got this microphone system based on your video and although it sound better than the camcorder mic, it sounds like i am talking on an intercom or a radio?
@RCINFORMER No, the audio wasn't cleaned up in any way on the above video. I did use a alkaline battery as recommended, and did make sure the lavaliere microphone was placed closed to my mouth so as to record loud enough.
@107098 The A/V jack is not an external microphone jack. To use an external microphone, you MUST have an external microphone jack on the camera. The A/V jack won't do.
@siklesbelgium The SONY HDR-AX2000E has XLR mike connectors, so to use the above microphone, you'd need an mini to xlr adapter. If it were, I'd get a Sennheiser G3 Evolution wireless system. That's a better match for your camera.
@guerillabill Will this work for a camcorder such as the Sony HD Handycam? I found it at Best Buy for around $250, give or take. I loved the camera and I'm thinking about getting it but I want to make sure I get a good external, wireless mic that's small, affordable, and easy to haul around. Would it connect well with this camera? Also, when you get this set, it comes with two mics, correct?; a hand held mic, and the clip-on?
@BlackHawkGaming External microphones only work with cameras that have external microphone ports on the camera. I don't think any Sony camera under $1000 has a external microphone port.
@AwesomeFilms101 Each wireless microphone will need a transmitter. According to a message posted below, you can use two microphones/transmitter with one receiver. But I haven't tried it.
@OrcSoldat With the WMS Pro kit I purchased, I got a wireless lapel microphone and a wireless handheld microphone and one wireless receiver. You can't use both of the wireless microphones at the same time as they are both on the same channel and will interfere with each other.
Someone please tell me, just to confirm: If I buy the Azden WMS Pro, clip it onto myself, get up, WALK AROUND, there will NOT be a wire for me to trip over and stuff because it is WIRELESS. Correct?
@cleber0001 In one of the messages below, someone said you could use two microphones. But they'd both have to be connected to the wireless transmitter.
hey....my camera records HD 1920x1080 ..its amazing SONY HDR CX130.....but da only problem is it doesnt hav an option for external microphone...it only has an inbuit mic.....so wat are my options?? shoud i buy a seperate device for recording audio???
@saadcoolshot The best option is to get a camera that has an external microphone port. While you could get a separate audio recorder, it will mean a lot of extra work trying to import and sync up the audio with the video from the camera you have. For a low budget HD camera with an external mic port, consider the Kodak Zi8.
@saadcoolshot I have the same problem. Got a absolutely FANTASTIC Pansonic camera BUT, no external mic. What I have done, is got an ipod touch and used the voice memo app and plug a mic in. However you need to get an adaptor to convert the standard 2 pin jack to 3 pin. These are extremely cheap and there is an advantage of not having wires coming out of the camera
You can hook up the 2 mic's at the same time! You can buy a Y connector from Radio Shack 1/8" male mono to 2 1/8" female mono and use both mic's at the same time... works great! The Azden WMS-Pro has 94db SPL and uses crystals in the transmitter and receiver instead of synthesized audio chip used in other wireless systems.
The Azden really is a good system for what it is. My video productions class in school uses these and the audio sounds great. They are quite sensitive to wind though
That is incredible. It sounds great. I need a solution for adding real-time comments to video of kids hitting off a pitching machine. I can't drop balls and stand by the camera at the same time. I'm ordering one tomorrow. Thanks for the demo!
@jakarooski The audio is exactly as recorded. Nothing done to it, no effects or enhancements. Just recorded straight into the Sony Vegas timeline via firewire from the camera, then rendered out to wmv for YouTube.
@guerillabill isn't there some small device or something out there, to put in middle, so I could insert mini jack in it and on the other side where XLR output, which can be inserted in Canon XL2?
HI Bill, My JVC GZ-HM320 doesn't have the hot shoe to receive the reciever. Any way to get around with it? Or you know of any other wireless microphone's receiver does not need hot shoe to connect with? Thanks.
@andyleearts You don't need a hotshoe, but do need an external microphone jack on the camera. If you do have an external microphone jack, you can use a $12 flash holder to mount the microphone to the camera.
If you don't have an external microphone jack on the camera, you can't use any kind of external microphone.
@whitebub I used a Sennheiser Evolution G3 wireless microphone in my Beaches DVD. The Sennheiser is a great microphone system, and works well out to over 100 feet in all conditions.
You can find my review of the microphone at my web site.
I just bought the Canon Vixia HF M31. specifically so i can get this wireless mics.. i make videos much like this one I just watched... just to make sure all i need now is a mono to stereo adaptor that plugs in to the camera and ill be all set to start making my videos is this correct?
@jjrudy41 Yes, all you need is a mono to stereo adapter, and you'll be ready to go. Be sure to use alkaline batteries in the microphone transmitter and receiver.
Awesome videos thank you. Im actually planning to do aviation and surf tutorial videos so im looking fo a cheap video camara so i can use it for interviews and to leave it standing at a tri-pod so my question is: which specs. has to have the camcorder to install this wireless mic, im planning to buy one aunder 200 dlls at walmart or Kmart online. Thank you for helping!
@WTVLIVE A good low priced video camera with an external microphone port is the Kodak Zi8. You can get these at Amazon for under $90. I have one and have used it in several productions.
Since last few months I've been trying to buy a Azden WMS Pro. in Brussels.I'd visited many local electronic shops but didn't find.I found only online but I'm not sure if those online are new or used?
Where I can find these in western europe, any idea?
2ndly How we can make this mounting shoe like U've on ur camera where we can fix wireless receiver?Normally I ddin' saw such mounting shoe in camcords.
Bill,my camcorder DOESN'T have an external mic jack. Are there any solutions that can solve my biggest consternation without having to buy a new camcorder just for that little hole? Thanks in advance!
@Bonecrusher27WTF The easiest solution is purchased a refurbished Kodak Zi8 camera from Amazon for $78. It shoots HD video and the camera does have an external microphone port.
@guerillabill Hi Bill thanks a lot for that! The reason I didn't do this was I already purchased a Panasonic HDC-SD60 so was hoping for solutions for that. Thanks again!
Bill: You are awesome, I've learned a lot from you. I own a Kodak zi8 and after watching your video I bought the Azden WMS Pro. Even though I turned the gain way up, I have to hold the mic in my hand to get decent volume, which is not conducive to good golf videos. I recently bought a second Zi8 so that I could record from two angles at once and mix them together. Will I be able to use one mike with these two cameras? Should I just use the two channels to do this? Thanks man love your stuff.
@golfprogress If you are using the lapel mic, the audio volume should be good. If it is not, there is either a problem with the mic, the batteries, or the connection in the Zi8.
Always use alkaline batteries in microphones for best results.
And you can only use one of these mikes as the same time, as they would over-ride the same frequency on the mike.
@guerillabill Thanks Bill. I'll check on the batteries, it could be that. The follow up question is, can I use one Mike with two Zi8 cameras and two receivers and just set the channel on both to the same?
Great review. We have two cameras and want to have working lavaliers for two people. Would you recommend buying two azden wlx pro's and putting them on the different channels? Or in your experience does one channel tend to have more interference?
@BizarrelyFunny Two azden mics will interfere with each other, due to limited channel selection. For much better results, get two sennheiser G3 evolution wireless mic systems ($500 each).
@Doghousepictures Any microphone with a standard 3.5mm mini plug will work with that camera. When it comes to wireless microphone quality, adequate will cost under $200, great will cost around $500 (sennheiser G3 evolution).
@godfather15228 No, you can't use two wireless microphones with just one receiver. Each mike needs to be on a different channel and have its own receiver.
You can use a portable audio mixer to connect the mikes to the camera.
You'll usually want to spend extra money on wireless microphones that auto select available unused channels. We use the Sennheiser Evolution G3 series for that.
First off, thank you for posting this video! Secondly, is this still your best option for something under $200 that is wireless. I do a show late at night near night clubs and I'm never very far away from the camera. However, I do need a wireless mic because of all the people walking around us. I just want to make sure this is still the best option for the money.
@retailjunkies It is the best option for a wireless microphone in this price range. But if I were shooting video were getting great sound in all conditions was important, I'd get a Sennheiser Evolution G3 system. That's what I use when shooting video for DVDs. Cost around $500 but well worth it.
How does this compare to a Nady 351VRLT Channel B Wireless Lavalier Microphone? They're both in a similar price point and I'm looking for something simple, decent quality, full of features, and of course inexpensive. Thank you for your great advice!
Appreciate your advice Bill. I purchased the HF S100, great camera, thanks. However, I am having a lot of background noise. Will appreciate your advise on how to cancel or minimize the background noise. Also is recording in MXP OR FXP mode make a bid difference as to recording in LP or SP mode? Thanks for your advice.
@diakitefamily Background noise from the microphone is either caused by low batteries, not using alkaline batteries, interference from other radio waves.
On the HF S100 it will make a big difference in lower quality if you record in LP or SP mode.
@guerillabill What mode would you prefer for shooting a documentary? Someone recommended MXP. Also with the Azden WMS-Pro, would adding a Camcorder Mini Audio Mixer help to further improve sound quality?
@diakitefamily I always shoot in highest quality mode. And if shooting a documentary, I'd use a Sennheiser G3 Evolution wireless microphone to get best audio.
@guerillabill Bill, please 1 more question for you. How does the Sony UWPV6 / 4042 Wireless Plug-in Microphone Pack compare to the Sennheiser G3 Evolution? Appreciate your advice.
Appreciate your advice. I looked into the Sennheiser G3 Evolution. It only comes with 1 microphone. Is it possible to find an extra one at Radio Shack that will be compatible with the Sennheiser? And lastly, What do you think about using a Sony HDR-XR550E 240GB HDD XR550 HD Hard Disk Camcorder. I will be shooting a documentary in Africa consisting of a series of 21 interviews. I greatly appreciate all your advice. Thanks again.
@diakitefamily The Sennheiser mics always search for a free channel, so they won't interfere with other mics you use - regardless of brand.
Regarding the XR550E . . . I would never use a hard disk camcorder outdoors or travel with one. For the kind of video you are doing, I'd get a Canon HF S10, or HF S100.
I am going to be conducting an interview. Is there a camcorder out there that can support 2 wireless microphones at once? Appreciate your prompt response.
@MsJas666 It is good for short shoots in a relatively radio free environment. For independent films, or stage use, I'd use a Sennheiser G3 evolution system.
@Buzzman182 Not really. It is good for short shoots in a relatively radio free environment. For independent films, I'd use a Sennheiser G3 evolution system.
@Passivesoul these mics are all on the same channel, so there would be feedback and interference. If you need multiple wireless mics, get a Sennheiser G3 evolution system.
@guerillabill Thanks for your quick reply Bill. For the Sennheiser G3 Evolution System how can it use multiple wireless mics? Is it something to do with the frequency? Each product seems to only come with one mic and a receiver. If I buy a separate sennheiser mic and a receiever could I use it with system?
@Passivesoul The Sennheiser G3 system uses 1680 tunable frequencies, so you can put each mic transmitter and receiver on a different frequency. You'll need a mic transmitter and receiver for each person you want to put a mic on.
You can use a mixer at the camera to bring in multiple mics if your camera doesn't have that feature.
I'm wondering, would the same procedure work to connect a wireless mic to a field recorder, like a Zoom H4 or Edirol R-09? They have mic inputs, and I'd like to have a wireless mic connected so I can interview people as someone else works the camcorder. Also, do you know of a lavaliere mic that would work for this, it would be less conspicuous than a handheld mic (the interviewees always know they're on, so I'm not hiding it from them). Thanks.
I took your advice and have found that this mic has a lot of static and poor range. The internal mic on my canon actually is far clearer than the azden wms pro mic. The range is not 250 ft as stated on the box. It is between 40 and 60 ft and the static gets worse as you get farther away. It's going back to Amazon today.
I would not recommend this mic to anyone. I do love my canon zr 960 and plan on buying a better quality mic (yes, I'll probably spend $300-$500).
My camera does not have a mic input jack, so, can i still use this wireless mic if i connect it to a digital voice recorder and sync the audio in editing?
@ConnersTutorials I guess that could work. But it will be a lot of trouble syncing the audio in your video editing program. Be easier to just get a camera with an external microphone port. IE Kodak Zi8 from Amazon for $117
@StephenPerkinsBlog No - the Sony Handycam DCR- SR42 does not have an external microphone port, so no external microphone will work with that camcorder.
@guerillabill Thank you so much! Your demonstration is very clear and easy to follow, and I am getting this mic for my son, who is studying film in college.
Hey, great little video. Very helpful. I have used the Azden Pro on my JVC Everio and it works really good. Bill, your how to video is really clean. Thanks much.
Hey Bill, will this mic work for dubbing/recording sound on a computer? Will it plug into the mic jack of a computer?
Also, is that Canon HV20 that you use an HD camcorder? I've been looking for a good reasonably priced ($300-$500) HD cam with good manual controls (Like iris control, shutter speed, focus, white balance & optical zoom) as well as an external mic jack and shoe mount. That cam seems to meet all my needs. Do you reccomend it?
This is a great review! Thanks, I was looking for an affordable wireless mic, but actually wanted 3 so up to 3 people can speak at a time. That leaves us with 3 unbalanced mini jacks at the stereo mini jack HV40 input. Do you know of a tripod mounted conversion box (not as expensive as beachtek or juicedlink) that will combine 3 inputs into 1 without much signal loss?

WTVLIVE 11 months ago
@WTVLIVE A good low priced video camera with an external microphone port is the Kodak Zi8. You can get these at Amazon for under $90. I have one and have used it in several productions.

I have a flip ultra hd camera is there any good mics for it :(. Hope you can help me
purple89 1 year ago
@purple89 The flip ultra hd doesn't have a external microphone port, so there's no way to connect a microphone.

Bill,my camcorder DOESN'T have an external mic jack. Are there any solutions that can solve my biggest consternation without having to buy a new camcorder just for that little hole? Thanks in advance!
Bonecrusher27WTF 1 year ago
@Bonecrusher27WTF The easiest solution is purchased a refurbished Kodak Zi8 camera from Amazon for $78. It shoots HD video and the camera does have an external microphone port.
guerillabill 1 year ago

Thanks man love your stuff.
golfprogress 1 year ago
@golfprogress If you are using the lapel mic, the audio volume should be good. If it is not, there is either a problem with the mic, the batteries, or the connection in the Zi8.
Always use alkaline batteries in microphones for best results.
And you can only use one of these mikes as the same time, as they would over-ride the same frequency on the mike.
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill Thanks Bill. I'll check on the batteries, it could be that. The follow up question is, can I use one Mike with two Zi8 cameras and two receivers and just set the channel on both to the same?
golfprogress 1 year ago
@golfprogress If you use two transmitters on the same frequency, they will override each other, might even generate feedback.

I need a lavalier mic for my Canon T2i...
what is a good lavalier mic for under $200
i will be using it for interviews
Ruben0918 1 year ago
@Ruben0918 You can find 'acceptable' wireless mics for under $200 like the Azden WMS Pro. But for a 'good' wireless mic, expect to pay $500+
guerillabill 1 year ago
Great review. We have two cameras and want to have working lavaliers for two people. Would you recommend buying two azden wlx pro's and putting them on the different channels? Or in your experience does one channel tend to have more interference?
BizarrelyFunny 1 year ago
@BizarrelyFunny Two azden mics will interfere with each other, due to limited channel selection. For much better results, get two sennheiser G3 evolution wireless mic systems ($500 each).
guerillabill 1 year ago
What is a quality wireless mic that is compatible with the CANON VIXIA HF-M30?
Doghousepictures 1 year ago
@Doghousepictures Any microphone with a standard 3.5mm mini plug will work with that camera. When it comes to wireless microphone quality, adequate will cost under $200, great will cost around $500 (sennheiser G3 evolution).
guerillabill 1 year ago
Can you use 2 wireless mics with one reciever? If not how Could I do that and with what model?
godfather15228 1 year ago
@godfather15228 No, you can't use two wireless microphones with just one receiver. Each mike needs to be on a different channel and have its own receiver.
You can use a portable audio mixer to connect the mikes to the camera.
You'll usually want to spend extra money on wireless microphones that auto select available unused channels. We use the Sennheiser Evolution G3 series for that.

which hd camcorder with wireless mic hole for between 100 to 300 hundred pounds thanks
HarryJamesEllard 1 year ago
@HarryJamesEllard Kodak Zi8 - under $100, or Canon HF M300 HD - around $370 at Amazon/
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill thanx except i cant find the canon one on amazon i found the other one looks good :)
HarryJamesEllard 1 year ago
First off, thank you for posting this video! Secondly, is this still your best option for something under $200 that is wireless. I do a show late at night near night clubs and I'm never very far away from the camera. However, I do need a wireless mic because of all the people walking around us. I just want to make sure this is still the best option for the money.
retailjunkies 1 year ago
@retailjunkies It is the best option for a wireless microphone in this price range. But if I were shooting video were getting great sound in all conditions was important, I'd get a Sennheiser Evolution G3 system. That's what I use when shooting video for DVDs. Cost around $500 but well worth it.
guerillabill 1 year ago
How does this compare to a Nady 351VRLT Channel B Wireless Lavalier Microphone? They're both in a similar price point and I'm looking for something simple, decent quality, full of features, and of course inexpensive. Thank you for your great advice!
bconradsmith 1 year ago
@bconradsmith They're about the same. Good for short distance, in a low radio frequency environment.
guerillabill 1 year ago
Appreciate your advice Bill. I purchased the HF S100, great camera, thanks. However, I am having a lot of background noise. Will appreciate your advise on how to cancel or minimize the background noise. Also is recording in MXP OR FXP mode make a bid difference as to recording in LP or SP mode? Thanks for your advice.
diakitefamily 1 year ago
@diakitefamily Background noise from the microphone is either caused by low batteries, not using alkaline batteries, interference from other radio waves.
On the HF S100 it will make a big difference in lower quality if you record in LP or SP mode.
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill What mode would you prefer for shooting a documentary? Someone recommended MXP. Also with the Azden WMS-Pro, would adding a Camcorder Mini Audio Mixer help to further improve sound quality?
diakitefamily 1 year ago
@diakitefamily I always shoot in highest quality mode. And if shooting a documentary, I'd use a Sennheiser G3 Evolution wireless microphone to get best audio.
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill Bill, please 1 more question for you. How does the Sony UWPV6 / 4042 Wireless Plug-in Microphone Pack compare to the Sennheiser G3 Evolution? Appreciate your advice.

stupid question.. so you can use both microphones at the same time.. like for an interview?
Freakdeke88 1 year ago
@Freakdeke88 You can use two or microphones at the same time. But if they are wireless, you have to use two different wireless frequencies.
guerillabill 1 year ago
Appreciate your advice. I looked into the Sennheiser G3 Evolution. It only comes with 1 microphone. Is it possible to find an extra one at Radio Shack that will be compatible with the Sennheiser? And lastly, What do you think about using a Sony HDR-XR550E 240GB HDD XR550 HD Hard Disk Camcorder. I will be shooting a documentary in Africa consisting of a series of 21 interviews. I greatly appreciate all your advice. Thanks again.
diakitefamily 1 year ago
@diakitefamily The Sennheiser mics always search for a free channel, so they won't interfere with other mics you use - regardless of brand.
Regarding the XR550E . . . I would never use a hard disk camcorder outdoors or travel with one. For the kind of video you are doing, I'd get a Canon HF S10, or HF S100.
guerillabill 1 year ago
I am going to be conducting an interview. Is there a camcorder out there that can support 2 wireless microphones at once? Appreciate your prompt response.
diakitefamily 1 year ago
@diakitefamily Any camcorder that has a stereo external microphone port can handle two microphone inputs, using a left/right to stereo cable.
Or you can use a portable audio mixer.
The big expense will be findin two wireless microphones that work on different channels so they don't interfere with each other.
I use Sennheiser G3 Evolution microphone system for this.

i want to start comedy sketches and short films would u recomment this or maybe just buying a mic
MsJas666 1 year ago
@MsJas666 It is good for short shoots in a relatively radio free environment. For independent films, or stage use, I'd use a Sennheiser G3 evolution system.

@guerillabill What if I get something like the beachtek or juicedlink adapter with several xlr slots?
Passivesoul 1 year ago
@Passivesoul these mics are all on the same channel, so there would be feedback and interference. If you need multiple wireless mics, get a Sennheiser G3 evolution system.
guerillabill 1 year ago
@guerillabill Thanks for your quick reply Bill. For the Sennheiser G3 Evolution System how can it use multiple wireless mics? Is it something to do with the frequency? Each product seems to only come with one mic and a receiver. If I buy a separate sennheiser mic and a receiever could I use it with system?
Passivesoul 1 year ago
@Passivesoul The Sennheiser G3 system uses 1680 tunable frequencies, so you can put each mic transmitter and receiver on a different frequency. You'll need a mic transmitter and receiver for each person you want to put a mic on.
You can use a mixer at the camera to bring in multiple mics if your camera doesn't have that feature.

Great video, it really helped me out!
Thanks.
sunrisesurfbum 1 year ago
I took your advice and have found that this mic has a lot of static and poor range. The internal mic on my canon actually is far clearer than the azden wms pro mic. The range is not 250 ft as stated on the box. It is between 40 and 60 ft and the static gets worse as you get farther away. It's going back to Amazon today.
I would not recommend this mic to anyone. I do love my canon zr 960 and plan on buying a better quality mic (yes, I'll probably spend $300-$500).
Brett
VitalityMassage 1 year ago
@VitalityMassage Be sure to use only alkaline batteries. Static will be caused by non alkaline batteries or weak batteries.
That said, it is a very low cost wireless microphone. If you want better, get a Sennheiser G3 wireless system. Runs about $600, but works great.

Does this work with Canon 550D?

@fyfaen1000 Only if the Canon 550D has the optional external microphone port.
guerillabill 1 year ago
My camera does not have a mic input jack, so, can i still use this wireless mic if i connect it to a digital voice recorder and sync the audio in editing?
ConnersTutorials 1 year ago
@ConnersTutorials I guess that could work. But it will be a lot of trouble syncing the audio in your video editing program. Be easier to just get a camera with an external microphone port. IE Kodak Zi8 from Amazon for $117
guerillabill 1 year ago
@ConnersTutorials You could use a clapperboard so you can sync your audio and video more easily in post.
DaveyYzermans 1 year ago
@ConnersTutorials
Yes syncing audio is about as fun as a root canal.
Every camcorder for me must have a external mic and a firewire port.
USB is okay for standard def but struggles with HD.

kodak zi-8 has an external mic input. Bought this one since the flip doesn't have the mic input.
