I hope nobody here ever mixes whistle in a grinder, that is ridiculously dangerous. Mixing any pyro comp in a grinder/blender is begging for trouble. I have personally watched a composition much less sensitive than whistle go up doing that, and I have the scar to prove it. I like to mix my whistle in a ziploc bag with the zipper closed just working it with my fingers and rolling the bag over. It's relatively safe and you can see how well your composition is mixing.
NEVER EVER USE METAL UTENSILS WHEN MIXING OR MEASURING EXPLOSIVE COMPOSTION. Wood or plastic will not spark or cause friction ignition. Use separate utensils for each composition so you do not cross contaminate the containers (and make an explosive mixture that you do not plan to immediately use.)
@BRADFORDGOREN Or you could try cleaning off the measuring utensil between chemicals as I do here. Plus, don't worry, I grounded myself before doing this. No sparks here!
@patrogizmo Hey, well Im not gonna lie about my age, Im 13 and I've been making m80s and cherry bombs for quite some time and im starting to get into shells and I realized that most people add a little whistle mix 2 their shells. Well I was wondering if I already have flash powder, could I just substitute it for whistle mix or should I go out and by some more ingredients?
@BRADFORDGOREN Why wouldn't he? More than half of commercial whistles contain titanium flakes, which is vastly more likely to produce sparks than combining bulk composition with a steel spoon.
Excellent editing & nice methods. luv this ^^ but next time pls DON'T USE METAL tools for measuring and blending this mixture! KClO4 can easily react with metals, since they behave as a catalyst. And if I were you, I wouldn't like to be there when this stuff goes off.
@4dv3ntur3r Thanks for your reply. I wouldn't worry about the sparking though. I don't think you can see here, but when I pick up the spoons, I put a grounding wire on them. And even without that, it's not likely to react anyways. The worst thing that could happen with the amount I'm making here is a small flash. No explosions. Just a quick flash.
@4dv3ntur3r horible methods not nice methods wet mixing is the best way to go using something like ethanol methanol or acetone is a much safer way than you mix the past which is relatively inert and you get much better whistle than what was made here
@pyrocrazyUSA Well apparently it is, considering you couldn't see what a great site it is. You even decided to post something incorrect on my video. So yea I'd say it is.
ok this is bullshit this mix is not THAT sensitive ive rammed this mix before with out any problems, jeez ur treating it like antimony trisulfide flash powder man
anyways who the fuck are u to say anything, do u have any vids........ i dont think so, so watever u guys keep treating this mix like a time bomb or something
@eddynelly1717 im on your side. its not sensitive to pressure, because i have pressed motors like this before. but i never ram any whistle mix, it needs ALOT of force to keep it from CATOing.
yea thanks but ive rammed it before and nothing happened so im not too crazy on this whole safety thing, but maybe its just my mix thats not sensitive or something
@eddynelly1717 it can be bad. but mainly if your using chlorate instead of perchlorate. im sure your using perchlorate because thats what you use for flash. i just never ram anything besides bp rockets. i press whistles for a consistant burn and sound.
I would love to answer your question on my video, but unfortunately I'm not going to be near my workshop for another five days. Wait until then and you'll have your answer.
Whistle mix is a general term to refer to any pyrotechnic composition that emits a whistling sound when pressed into a tube and ignited. It is used as a rocket propellant, particularly in small bottle rockets. Whistle mix tends to be fast burning and brisant; therefore it is also used as burst charge in shells. A typical whistle mix is made from 70% potassium perchlorate and 30% sodium benzoate, measured by weight.
The fuel in most whistle compositions is a salt of an aromatic hydrocarbon. Compositions with chlorates and gallates were used historically, but have now been abandoned as prone to accidental ignition.
Whistle compositions tend to be particularly sensitive. To achieve the whistling behavior, the composition must be formed into a solid grain; it otherwise burns too rapidly and just explodes.
The composition is typically compressed using an arbor or hydraulic press. Ramming with a mallet (which is acceptable for many other compositions) may result in an explosion. What you are talking about is very dangerous and should not be attempted by anybody without significant knowledge of fireworks. Gasoline is not a forgiving substance! Please, if you are going to make Cerealkiffer's mix, do so carefully.
But the don`t tell you the exact manufacturing technique. The ratios are right but you don`nt get good fuel with this. It will also be hygroscopic without vaseline (petroleum yelly)
cool, i'd love to see the tut :) I've been looking all over for a proper instructional on whistle engines, im planning to make 1" diameter ones with a bigass salute on top for new years eve :) that'll draw some attention i guess
and btw you can make kclo3 from electrolysis or get it from matches q: i have a video on how to.. simple but you need alot of matches before you can get alot q:

You have to use vaseline, Fe2O3 (optional) and white camp stove gasoline to produce whistle mix.
Fe2O3+ KCLO4 (or KCLO3, dangerous) to
Na-benzoate.
Pour Gasoline on this mix and knead until you ahve a uniform mass.
Dry it and you got the fastest whistle mix.
What you do in the vid is not whistle mix!

Cerealkiffer 2 years ago
so, the vaseline and camp stove gas is to make it less sensitive when pressing or something?
FOATE 2 years ago
It will be absolutely potent, unsensitive against moisture and will be dangerous as all chlorate/fuel comps are.
But....
The Vaseline stabelizes the composition.
I will do a tutorial next weekend. I see there are many open questions :)
I`ve ignited 500g of it and it was damn loud.
For example 500g of that "powder" like in the vid made a little bang but didn`t detonate.
