In fact, I contend that the line "felling at home and you're all alone, flesh and bone on the telephone" is a reference to sex lines. I'm a Christian myself, but I absolutely understand the points being made.

Personal Jesus may be about idolization of someone you love, but I feel that isn't totally a bad thing, if it helps you to find the real Jesus later. The song actually doesn't have anything at all to do with religion. It's about how people tend to idolize other people and make them like a "personal Jesus." It's a brilliant metaphor really. The Johnny Cash version is good, better than the lame Marilyn Manson version, but not as good as the original Depeche Mode version. Still, it shows that he was more than just another country singer in that he was able to successfully cover songs by the likes of Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt").
