this was definitely an acquired taste, but for whatever reason, i decided to listen again. and again. after about the 5th play, i was crying. so beautiful.
I just read in one your comments that you're Jason's dad right? In that case, Happy Father's Day! We're from Guatemala (in Canada now), and we first heard of Grandaddy around 2002, we've been great fans of Jason's music since. You should know you did a great job with that kid!
Please tell him his great work with Grandaddy will not be forgotten. Our kids love it.. a favorite for road trips is their amazing Fambly Cat album. Tell him thank you SO MUCH.. he's given us so much joy!!
Man, if you guys think this is sad, you should listen to Sparklehorse. It sounds crazy, but Grandaddy is my 'upbeat'/happy music that I listen to.
Also keep in mind that the lead singer of Sparklehorse killed himself by shooting himself in the heart. Jason Lytyle is still alive, even though he's living in self-imposed exile out in Montana or whatever...
This makes me cry... i heard it when the plane crashed near buffalo and that's my only loved city... and i dont live anywhere near anymore... I want to go back...
If anyone's read the Dark Tower books by Stephen King, this is the song that plays when they see the beautiful rose in the vacant lot, just sitting there growing out of the decrepit concrete jungle, enticing you with it's multiple hypnotic galaxies that emanate bright yet soothing red light from within it's subtle gentle core.
Saw that show, too. Was that the one when Jason's keyboard set-up crapped out on him? Sad, but a great show nonetheless. Saw the band several times in the early Aughts.

That ringing little buzzy piano sound in the background is what makes the song so brilliant. It's such a sweet, sad song, but that constant noise in the background gets your attention. It's unnerving. It gives the song a strange feeling and the song works on you at a whole different level.
Grandaddy has this distinct ability to make me cry with their music. I can't say I love it. I can't say I don't. I CAN say that this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
there was a weeping willow outside our home growing up, i always remember it when I hear this song. I imagine i could go back there and sleep under it and be reborn somehow.
Sophtware Slump is just one of the most beautiful albums ever done, and that the band and Lytle (hidden away in Montana) would probably hate such a comment only adds to what I like about them. He strikes me as someone with at least depressive tendencies, and that makes the music. That they never had true mainstream success, but people agonize over the Spears or Beatles of this world tells you something about this world.
hard to believe i was listening to this song for the first time seven years ago....freshman year of college. and it still sounds like the tree outside my window.
I use to go riding alone around midnight around the icy cool streets of Providence Rhode Island to this song. Yeah, I was going to some tough time then. This song reminds me of "Asleep" by The Smiths. Tender melodies from a musical master.
I honestly miss them so much, like somebody going out your life too soon it leaves you empty. I was lucky to see them twice live...still not enough.

I played this album for my 81 yr old mom tonight (i live with and take care of her). She loved it, and we both cried in the car while this played.

I think this song would go very nicely with a little Andrew Bird style whistling at the end... Just a thought. x
