  • I think you pretty conveniently ignore absorption rates in this video. Additionally the satiety issue is relevant because whey protein is fast digesting just like most things you drink. So by the time your body processes it you need more food. Also whey protein is much more effective around workouts for this reason, so suggesting to people that a SUPPLEMENT is superior to whole foods is false without perspective.

  • @beaniepoker I don't consider whey protein a supplement. Yes, I do ignore absorption rates, because it's been well established that absorption rates are of very little consequence.

  • Hahah whats with the random pause in the video where you cough?! 3.54

  • what's wrong with taking bcaa's as a supplement. is it not the same as having whey protein?

  • What are your opinions on Organic Whey protein? Are the "normal" whey filled with rBGH and things like that? Is those whey refining processes remove able to remove all these stuff?

  • last time i've been sick is over two years ago. hopefully i can contribute this to my whey protein boosting my immune system.

  • even the supplement companies reccomend eating whole foods.

  • @Libthetics Did you even watch the video? If so, can you identify anything I said that is wrong? If not... uh... where's the problem?

  • @LiftingForLife No. I was clearly stating that if even the supplement companies (who only care about revenue) reccomend whole food sources, then it says something.

  • @Libthetics It says that their employees are ignorant morons, nothing else.

  • is there a difference in the micronutrients between WPC and WPI? thanks

  • @strukt87 Yes. WPC tends to more micronutrient dense.

  • Thanks Ian for helping everything make sense for me :] Keep posting vids bro!

  • @matw1x No problem, thanks for the support!

  • What about hydrolyzed whey protein and whey isolate as supposed to regular whey?

  • @TheFreshbum Not worth the price difference. Whey concentrate is just fine.

  • @LiftingForLife thank you. Keep inspiring people...

  • What do you think about soy protein? Thanks.

  • @mcmechosoudek It's a lower quality protein. Its amino acid profile is quite poor. I would suggest you stick to whey.

  • hey Ian. What do you think about the blends of proteins, like myofusion and others in the market?

  • @lucbelico I prefer pure whey BUT ultimately the macronutrient profile is the main thing that matters.

  • I need to show this video to my friends whom i tried to convince multiple times about this subject, but they just seem to have this strong belief..

  • Hey buddy, why do you take off the like/dislike buttons ?

leave them, need to click like :)

  • Awesome vid bro!!!

  • Many sense to me! Most people push for a more natural diet because some noobs will straight up drink shakes all day if you dont tell them otherwise. You should reinforce that, even though it is obvious. Shakes are meant to supplement a diet.

  • @astherushcomes13 Whey protein = food. It's as natural as it gets. You can drink 5 shakes a day and eat pop tarts if you want to.

  • Hi Ian even though I do agree that whey is indeed superior as a stand alone protein around how many scoops of whey should I take per day to get the maximum benefit from the micro nutrient perspective? Personally i prefer savory foods you see...and aside from Dan Berg's Real Man's Protein shake there is none out there :))

  • Are you a nazi or not? I asked this once before because I was told you are. Just say yes or no and I can quit asking. As i said before i dont subscrbie to nazis or any type of racism.

  • @lansky52 What the fuck? Are you serious? Have fun being blocked.

  • Is it bad LIVING off whey protein?

  • Ian how is testosterone related to muscle building?

  • casein protein is more filling!

  • Great video, keep up the good work!

  • Ian what do u think about relying solely on Whey and eggs?

  • @bigfreskgoldsgym That's fine. Personal preference.

  • @LiftingForLife Cool man thanks for answering. Only reason for asking is I will be going off to college soon where money will be tight. Thanks so much for all the info you put out!

  • @bigfreskgoldsgym its what I do except I also eat turkey but thats about it

  • Another video making perfect sense. Keep it up!

  • great info ian...i must say that protein from people younger than 20 is not really necessary, i think its a bit overrated in my opinion...

  • beef protein will pound for pound be far superior to whey protein. just because whey is a "dairy derivative" does not mean that it is micronutrient dense - ie. it has little fat therefore it will have very little solubilized lipophilic micronutrients when compared to something like an egg yolk or beef.

  • @hash1212121212 Everything you've just said is false.

  • @LiftingForLife

Then why is it that every dietician (level 5 evidence - inb4 you mad) basically advocates against teenagers relying on protein powders for their nutritional needs (as they would end up deficient in many fat soluble vitamins/micros). To say whey is high in micros is a joke relative to beef and fish (aka real food).

  • @hash1212121212 1. An appeal to authority does not mean you're correct, it just means you can't defend yourself with actual evidence.

    2. I never implied anyone should "rely on protein powders for their nutritional needs".

    3. Whey is undeniably high in micronutrients. Just read the nutrition label.

    4. You're very close to getting blocked. Bring something useful to the table or leave.

  • @hash1212121212 Who says you cant get fat from other sources anyway?

  • @GusMartin2

    you sure can.

  • @hash1212121212 So why would how much fat it has matter?

  • Best intro thus far, fantastic content and great delivery as well. Glad you went from considering of stopping this channel to trying for a partnership, with ya all the way bro. niceeee

  • What do you think about Soy protein?

  • @TheJorjj It's a relatively low quality protein.

  • I think it is pretty hilarious that people feel as though the body, once food is consumed, magically decides which "protein" it is going to use... For the sake of simpicity, the body doesnt give a damn, it needs what it needs... taking your protein in via shakes simply means you have to get the rest of your macros as well as micros from other sources. In other words... you can have your chicken/ beef or you can have a shake and some almond butter... I often choose the latter for sake of ease.

  • @pt191145 Amen.

  • why every can of whey has warnings on it about possible renal and hepatic damage vs nothing on the chicken package?

  • @blankplanet I've never seen such a warning.

  • Great video, also Richard DawkinsFTW. The Selfish Gene <3

  • Whey may be nutritionally superior but does it actual confer those nutritional/health/muscle hypertrophy benefits in a 'real world' practical sense? Are there GOOD quality studies to show this (ie study population in the 100s)? Thx.

  • Is there any truth to being able to develop a 'resistance' or experience some kind of diminishing returns from consuming mainly the same type of protein over and over?

  • @03056932 No.

  • Can we trust nutrition lables?

  • @MriBackup Yes.

  • Great video!

  • What is your view on speed of digestion? For someone that only wants to eat 3 times a day is it an issue that whey protein will be absorbed so quickly and not provide the slow and steady release of amino acids that whole foods would?

  • The only problem with whey protein powder is the lack of fiber makes you shit bricks.

Also, most protein powders have sweeteners in it. Not healthy at all. The best all around I've found is Reflex nutrition's natural whey.

Then get some fiber. Eat some bamboo or something.

  • you look at pictures of antique greece or wherever, they look like todays bodybuilders. Ok one might say; but those who painted this or made those statues where gay. All right its a bit beside the point. It just seem like common sense that it must be, in the overall, more healthy to eat whole food. Work horses are very muscular, they eat grass and whole grains.

  • I think nature put fat, carb and protein together for a reason.

  • @MadManATA You make it sound like nature has a brain lol

  • @LiftingForLife genetics plays a part on how you digest and absorb nutrients from food. Your genetics is influenced by nature.

  • im gonna hav to disagree with u on this man...whole foods r ALWAYS gonna be better than man made whey protein...to be honest i think all those protein powders r a bunch of crap...all supplements r for that matter...they dont even need to be evaluated by the food and drug administration...idk jus my opinion...could be wrong

  • @12inweiner you're fucking retarded because whey protein is just the protein from food (milk)

  • whey protein was only intended for use to fill up protein requirements because body builders have a much higher need for it

  • @LiftingForLife what do you think about Casein. I was thinking about consuming Casein just before bed and immediately after waking up.

  • I was watching a nature channel on TV the other day. The chetaah was sitting under a shading tree downing a protein shake. The Chetaah was interview and he said he needed to get his Whey protein in his muscles within 60 minutes of an exhausting gazelle chase.

  • Ian forgive me if I'm wrong here, but isn't there a point of diminishing returns in terms of leucine intake? Sure the BCAA/leucine profile in whey is superior to beef, but just how much is able to be "processed" by the body? Getting this info from Eric Helms via 3DMJ article (on protein intake): "Lastly, the most recent research shows that if protein sources higher in Leucine (dairy, egg, and meat sources) are consumed, less total protein is needed to maximally stimulate MPS at each meal."

  • @kylerules "In fact, in the most recent research it has been shown that MPS is maximally stimulated by 3-4g of the branch chain amino acid Leucine (or .05g/kg of Leucine), and that it can only be maximally stimulated every four to six hours. This research is the first of its kind in that it examines not only nitrogen balance, but the MPS gene-signaling effects of amino acids. Depending on protein source, it typically takes anywhere from 30-50g of protein to meet the 3-4g Leucine requirement."

  • It's weird how so many people love supplements so much. People were muscular before manufacturers started filtering out the whey. People in prison only get regular milk (not just whey) yet they are to build and maintain muscle. Taking 100% whey is not needed in any way, shape or form. It's just convenient. Even if you drink plain old milk and not just whey you will still build muscles.

  • @GyalisAndino I don't consider whey protein a supplement. Of course it's unnecessary, but that doesn't mean it isn't nutritionally superior to whole food sources of protein.

  • @GyalisAndino

Where in the world did you get that people are saying it's necessary? Everyone knows there are plenty of routes to getting results, this isn't a matter of ruling anything out but rather arguing which is the most efficient. If you want to debate the position that people are defending then that's one thing, but don't come in here and start arguing against claims which have never been brought forth in the first place. Supplement companies do not represent the true fitness community.

  • @GyalisAndino

people in prison are probably taking steroids. people in prison have natural high levels of testosterone (which sometimes cause them to commit such crimes)...so the comparison is not fair...

  • @GyalisAndino I drink a half a gallon of milk a day, but still add whey to my diet. I always wondered how whole food is different from liquid form.

I eat a lot of chicken and stuff to etc.. I eat a combination of whole foods, milk, and whey....

  • Im sure you do your homework and got all the different aspects at whey vs whole food proteins, but call me old fashioned if you will, but i love eating :) Not that i dont drink whey - I do and in fact i think its an important part of my diet at this point, but I prefer eating most of my macros instead of drinking them :) And here where I live, whey isnt cheaper than whole foods, but thats offtopic :)

  • btw these vids are great, you touched on beta-alanine i would love to hear more especially for long-endurance sports

  • @UpalKashey Have you seen the video I did on pre-workout formulas?

  • @LiftingForLife i have i guess if thats all there is to say then thats it, it was a bit short for me. iv done some research on it and it seems to be extremely useful, my fear is of course with such enhancing sports formulas like creatine and beta-alanine, and wether or not it is worth it, its risks, dangers, long-term effects, personal experience. your experience on these things trumps mine thats what i'm looking to get out of these vids.

    thanks regardless

  • @LiftingForLife watching again, thanks!

  • great points. im not sure quite honestly whats better. only thing i can go by is feeling and thats not the kind of channel this is. i feel far better now eating whole foods over the basic protien i would eat. but i also saw some excellent gains when i was drinking whey isolate, but then again im making those gains now by eating more. i dont know...

great topic though and yes it is 100% cheaper to substitute your whey for milk at the end of the day.

  • great points. im not sure quite honestly whats better. only thing i can go by is feeling and thats not the kind of channel this is. i feel far better now eating whole foods over the basic protien i would eat. but i also saw some excellent gains when i was drinking whey isolate

  • btw wtf happens at 3:55 i the vid?

  • @Urahara8o5 A message pops up to explain immunoglobulins and lactoferrin... do you not see it? I guess annotations don't work on phones?

  • @LiftingForLife um nah man dont get that message and ive watched this video twice on a pc. I just see a timer go down on the top left of the screen.

  • @Urahara8o5 Did you disable annotations?

  • @LiftingForLife ah yeah I did, silly me, thanks for the heads up Ian.

  • people that seem to be bringing up stuff like "ah pros advocate only eating whole foods and supping in whey" and seem to be ignoring the fact that your body responds to nutrients not foods, just look at Greg Plitts diet ffs,the guy just slams down shakes and has a world class physique.

  • people are taking this as "eat only whey all the time". That's not what he's getting at. He's saying that it is a really high quality protein source and should definitely be frequently included in one's diet.

  • The point about immunoglobulins seems really speculative. I don't know much on immunology but how do immunoglobulins really improve your immune system? Immunoglobulins are massive proteins - and surely they will be broken down by pepsin, and peptidases in the GI tract before they can even be of use.

  • You are thinking way too hard about this. Nothing beats whole foods. Whey is great but does not compare to chicken breast and green beans/broccoli. You are extremely misguided in saying that whey protein will fill you up more than chicken, turkey, beef, or steak. I find it embarrassing that you are recommending whey protein over chicken or fish. No one in their right minds would substitute whey for chicken, that's just idiotic. You did not clear misconceptions, you created more.

  • @TheTwatterson I take criticism seriously and if such criticism is valid I do my best to correct any mistakes I may have made to generate such criticism in the first place. In this case your opinions on the matter are wildly off base and frankly not worth an intelligent response on my part. If you choose to disregard the *facts* that I have presented in this video that is your prerogative but please do not turn around and insult me because of your deliberate choice to remain ignorant. Thank you.

  • @LiftingForLife You talk about amino acid profiles in whey and act like it is so much better than any other source, yet you forget to speak of total amino acid profiles in complete meals such as 6oz chicken, cup of broccoli, carrots, and brown rice or pasta. Secondly, you mentioned that turkey breast has more fat than whey, which I find funny, because the 1g of fat found in a serving of turkey breast is the same 1g of fat found in my 100% All Natural Whey from Optimum Nutrition.

  • Respond to this video... If you are saying that whey is amazing and should be used, then I would agree. But it doesn't seem that you are saying that. It seems like you are saying FORGET FOOD BROZ AND JUST MAKE WHEY PROTEIN SHAKES. The whole argument about satiety is a joke as well. Whey protein is processed more rapidly than any other source. Some studies show it's out of your system in as little as 15 minutes. Not very filling compared to chicken breast with complete protein and fats.

  • @TheTwatterson Excuse me into* your system. Meaning it's passed the stomach and being absorbed.

  • Lastly, I do appreciate your ignorant response. I find it funny when people make outrageous claims so they can look important and then pull the FACTZ OMGZ and OMGZ YOUR IGNORANZ cards. Pathetic.

  • @TheTwatterson 1. Adding carbs and vegetables to a whole food protein hardly helps the amino acid profile at all because a) you're not adding much overall protein and b) the protein you're adding has a poor amino acid profile. Thus, that whole argument is moot.

    2. Please rewatch the video. It is possible to process whey to the point that it contains ZERO carbs and ZERO fat. Good luck finding a food that hits those numbers - not that I even claimed it was necessarily superior in that regard.

  • @TheTwatterson 3. I never said whey should replace all food, nor did I even imply it in any way.

    4. The argument about satiety is fact and is supported by empirical research. The fact that whey is absorbed more rapidly than other protein sources is irrelevant. NO studies show that whey is fully digested and absorbed in 15 minutes. That is utter nonsense. Even though whey is "fast digesting" we're still talking about a matter of hours, not minutes.

  • @TheTwatterson 4. You call chicken breast "complete protein" - whey is a complete protein as well.

    5. I am not making outrageous claims, I am stating fact. Period. Everything I have said can be substantiated by reading the nutrition facts on a tub of whey, looking at data in a food database and doing a search on Pubmed.

Again: please do not insult me on my own videos because you don't like the facts I present. Go watch some LuiMarco videos if you want someone to cater to your ignorance.

  • @LiftingForLife lol ignore this idiot he is retarded whey is obviously more filling but he is ignorant and does not realise that the reason he is hungry 1 hour after taking whey is because it's a very fast protien

  • @mouthforwar93 No, milk and diary contain 80% casein and 20% whey. Not comparable.

  • the problem is whey portein isnt cheap , but turkey , chiken, eggs are cheap protein sources

  • @liucas2 I would encourage you to double check that because the reality is that whey protein is the cheapest protein source - by a fairly large margin in most cases.

  • @LiftingForLife well at least here in brasil it isnt cheaper it is like 1kg of a good and cheap whey is like 80R$ and well with those 80R$ i could by 320 eggs

  • @LiftingForLife i can get 50 lbs of whey of around $200 bucks nuff said

  • lol dont you not even drink protein. or you only like isopure

  • @dgwear69

Isopure=whey isolate so I'm assuming it's pretty much the exact same thing.

  • @dgwear69 Just Isopure for now - I haven't found any powders I like lol

  • @LiftingForLife well atleast that shows your not just saying this cause your to lazy to make meal proteins.

  • I'm watching this video,....waiting for Ian's ermz.

  • very informative video! yeah buddy

  • @TheKevstreet Thank you!

  • When i eat i high protein meal after my workout my body stays sore...When i take whey protein after a workout my body has a lot less ache..Why is that??

  • @MusclePimp because whey protein helps your muscles recover faster

  • @MusclePimp More protein = better recovery (to a certain point)... whole food protein would have the same effect.

  • @MusclePimp personal stories dont mean squat i have both. after i eat im sore after i make a shake im still sore another day its the opposite why is that? placebo effect maybe?

  • @thunderheart226 Chill out broseph. I don't think he's trying to prove anyone wrong :)

  • awesome bro

  • @genericteen Thank you sir!

  • Nice vid! I'll be saving money on sirloin and making more ogus cakes!

  • @BERGATHLETICS I like real cake lol

  • Really good unbiased video, I am still doing exclusively whole foods, however 140 grams of protein is very easy to do for me without powders.

  • @666janeair I get all of my protein from whole foods as well but not because I think it's superior to whey.

  • @LiftingForLife

I just love to eat LOL.

  • @666janeair Most people do... eating actually activates the same pathways as having sex. lol

  • Honestly who dislikes informative videos like this. All you broscientists need to stop hating on Ian just because hes doing something with his life and you're not. Scientific nutrition based conclusions are the future of the fitness industry, deal with it.

  • @rambo2670 Like I've said before I only pay attention to the number of likes on my videos because people don't click like for no reason. You'll notice that most of my recent videos have right around 15 dislikes which suggests it's the same group of people disliking my videos each time. Oh well.

  • another brilliant video Ian. could you please share your thoughts on carb timing and insulin response? if you've already done one I apologize. did have a look but couldn't find one!

  • @bentheballer I will do more videos on that/those topics in the future but to the reality is that you truly don't have to even think about either of those two concepts... they just aren't relevant to the real world at all.

  • You kids make me laugh, you think you know more than people who have been doing it for years and the pro's lol go back to school.

  • @krillthefish Well I DO know more than the pros on this topic. Do you genuinely believe that experience as a professional bodybuilder somehow indicates knowledge of nutritional science? Pros are pros because they are genetically blessed, work hard, and eat and take drugs as instructed by their "gurus". Most pros are actually very ignorant of science as it relates to bodybuilding. However, if you feel that experience inherently indicates knowledge that's fine - just avoid my videos in the future.

  • Whey protein should not replace food, if you want to take whey protein personally i would take it inbetween your 5-7 meals a day as a boost but mainly first thing in the morning and straight after the gym. Remember that whey protein is a fast acting protein it doesn't stay in the body for long at all which was missed in the this video! so you need casein type proteins also i.e milk, cottage cheese type products your body needs it all but at different times of the day and according to your needs

  • @krillthefish Absorption speed has no significance in practice. What matters is overall macronutrient intake. I don't advocate 5-7 meals per day either.

  • @LiftingForLife I think you need to go back to bodybuilding school mate to be honest! try telling the pro bodybuiders that. If people want to know more about body building ask someone who's what they are talking about like Jay Cutler or the like.

  • @krillthefish.

My friend, obviously you live in a cave.

Since you have no heard the obscure bullshit some pro bodybuilders have said. I'm a huge bodybuilding fan, i am competitive and it's my lifes most important thing but i realize that most of the pro's have very little correct knowledge, it's the genetics, the drive and dedication that makes them professional, knowledge pays little affect to that.

  • @LiftingForLife lol you easily could have literally destroy him in every possible way for this comment, but you didn't. Hope that positivity pays of in more subscribers :)

  • @MusixPro4u My thoughts, exactly. Ian's a very astute guy and can articulate his knowledge quite well. However, I do prefer when he simply allows an opinion to stand on its own merit (as he did here), rather than going negative. This, from an older lifter with a fair amount of experience who also recognizes that the truth has a certain ring to it. At the very least, I encourage others from the "old school" to strongly consider this young man's opinions. Great work, keep it up, Ian.

  • @LiftingForLife how many meals a day do u advocate? because even 5-6 meals seems alot. and how long should you space out your meals?

  • @krillthefish

    brb everything you said=broscience retardness

  • @walshy0001 lol, exactly

  • im watching this drunk lol

  • @thecodyz o lawd!

  • Hey Ian. Can you make a video on whole eggs vs egg whites? I always here conflicting things as to whether or not whole eggs are bad for you (too much fat, cholesterol).

  • @mtjor156 Can do! I'll get to it as soon as I can.

  • what getting laid you dont get to that ian

  • @123456raiden lolwut?

  • @123456raiden i seriously doubt you get laid keyboard warrior

  • Hahahah whats up with the long "derp" pause

  • @juan029384756 I noticed that too. Oh well. lol

  • @juan029384756 there should be an explanation of the two things he mentioned before. It just shows up every second time.

  • keep it going ian

  • @Faggit555 Will do!

  • how old are you

  • @LiftingForLife oh ok thats good you look atleast 19 or 20

  • @LiftingForLife what state do you live in

  • @MrDerrick614 lol, why?

  • @LiftingForLife just asking i live in ohio

  • @MrDerrick614 No problem. I'm in Georgia.

  • 1st. nice shirt brah

  • @aaogreekone Thanks cuuuuzz

  • What is currently your macro-nutrient intake?

  • @chaknoww Around 220p/700c/100f but the truth is I try to eat as much as I can within reason.

  • which protein brands would you recommend, besides isopure lol?

  • @Believe7291 Machine Whey by Marc Lobliner has a fantastic profile/price. Not sure on taste or mixability as I haven't actually used the product but the reviews look solid.
