  • if god was a micro-chip

  • This is one of his best; it's too bad the version with Dora Ohrenstein doesn't have a better recording.

  • d-_-b

    BEST BUY

  • heard this in a Best Buy ad just now....I hate Best Buy even more, but I still love this piece

  • The beginning section of this composition can be heard in the "Natural Treasures" Object Theater of the Rochester Museum and Science Center (NY). It is played during the water scene...and I am so happy that I finally found it! YES!

  • Was on a Super Bowl ad a few minutes ago

  • The church (La chiesa)

  • There's a great version of this piece in a film called "The Church", it's truly fucked up. I've been a fan of Glass and Italian horror ever since.

  • 3:52 .... the best transition I've heard

  • esto es de otro mundo !!! Terrific

  • Amazing stuff!!

  • I am but a mere whore,

    Before such a mirror...

  • Isn't this song in some documentary? I swear it is but I don't remember which one..

  • @Xiphos0292 philip glass scored many of Errol Morris's documentaries, but I don't believe Floe was actually used in any of them. You might be thinking of some of the music he composed for Fog of War

  • @nyumetsu This song is in the "documentary" Koyaanisqatsi.

  • @scienceisknolwedge No, it isn't.

  • @CptSchmidt True, I just checked; it is not. I apologize

  • @Xiphos0292 Man on wire !

  • @Xiphos0292 Koyaanisqatsi

  • Nostalgia, all over my head...

  • omgosh Why is this my 1st time listening to this!?!? So orgasmic

  • watch?v=ZhgYCrtxqqg this is some minimalist music i made

  • why haven't I listened to more Philip Glass? This is really amazing.

  • I'm not very familiar with the theory of music but I love Philip Glass' style, his music, his way making fast appearing slow, his way to make simple melodies so complex, to conduct simple melodies from complex therories.

I don't like these recordings as their quality isn't as good as it could be and the interprepation is poor. I'm thinking about uploading the Glassworks I have even though they are not flawless either. I hope some of you could check them and leave a comment of your thoughts.

    .

  • Glass once stated that he attends to the spaces in between the notes as much as he does on the notes themselves. Over the years he has fallen from his reverence for silence, and the resulting blur of noise is all but unbearable.

  • honestly, all i could do was smile when listening to this for the first time.

  • I agree - this track always moves me. Rubric also transports.

    TheAngel . com

  • does anyone else hear in the opening theme the melody from the third movement of Sibelius's 5th symphony? i suspect it was an intentional nod from Glass to Sibelius.

  • @boringalias

you are right...it is similar...french horn part...

  • This track will forever remind me of a certain time in my life. I had just bought my first car (used of course) and the previous owner had left a couple of cassettes in the center console, one being Springsteens Born to Run and the other being Glassworks. I still to this day thank the previous owner for accidentally introducing me to two awesome (but very different) artists. If I close my eyes when I listen to this I can imagine myself crusing down the freeway with the windows down. Freedom.

  • I remember imagining a fairy's playground when I heard this, dusk through a lush forest area all scampering about in some unknown game of hide n seek n then run like hell.

  • hahaha this shit is a trip wen ur fukin blown

  • Listen to this on L. ; )

  • @savage1537 Wtf is L man

  • this song rocks!

  • haha as some one who listens to technical death metal as well as compositions such as this I find it funny when people feel it is a little too chaotic for their tastes. It is mild to my ears.

  • maxi-minimalistyeriousity personified

  • this is a little hard to hear after a while...it sounds like a bunch of pistons moving up and down...very innovative though

  • I cannot believe you can be that good a composer that nearly all your pieces are amazing soul-grabing master-works !?! Phil Glass is a real genius in his style.

  • I think Philip Glass' music is more relevant than ever. With Facebook and the endless stream of repetitive information that is in essence just 0 and 1s, basically Maths, the sedate friendly but structured and automated sound of Glass is highly relevant.

  • @6JohnRedmond6 yes good point, well said. so then this is set to become more and more relevant.

  • I love songs that make my eyes move because I think the sounds come from every direction... this one does that!

  • This is partially the reason I stopped rocking in cover bands and started mutating minimalism, techno, violins, and pianos instead. Thanks for posting this; "Floe" truly changed my musical life in 1985. Peace :)

  • im sure if you locked someone in a room with this music blasting for two days, they woudl go completely insane.lol philip glass is great though, i like this.

  • this one took me a few times before I could really appreciate it listening it. I need to focus on the big lines, otherwise it'll makes me crazy. great music though!

  • I sign up for youtube to like this! Awesome!

  • I first heard this track in 1983 while living in S. Calif and was shopping for a trip to Hawaii. I had to buy it before I left and listened to it on my walkman on the beach over in Maui. Great woven fabric with lots of beautiful colors.......

  • @tedpas interesting you say that about the walkman. i read somewhere that glass wrote this work (i.e. glassworks) because he wanted to write something "walkman suitable". i guess he succeeded there with you! *grin*

    jeez, i love this piece....

  • I've looking for this type of music for so long. One that doesn't represent a certain ideology, doesn't make you feel like you have to idolize and emulate the writer (in a superficial way, i mean), and can still draw an emotional response from the listener. Thank you, Phil.

  • @kcscene0 well said. Some music i say, music to die to, or to fight to, but with Glass; music to think to.

  • Reminds me of some scenes from 'Brazil'. :) Phillip Glass is amazing.

  • This is beautiful.

My mind is taken else where when I listen to this.

    Five stars!!

  • FN AWESOME

  • Epic.

  • orchestral acid

  • lol... this is MUCH more than acid

  • I write music and some have compared some of what I have written to Glass which pissed me off to no end. However, there is great value in this music, something I did not understand until now.

I write nothing like Glass—but I recognize this beauty.

  • Often it's just because Glass is the only composer they can think of. I get the same thing when people hear my music too but I think I'm as much like Glass as I am like Palestrina - not at all. I suppose it's a compliment though.

  • whatever. sounds like you're just bitter, whether what you say is true or not.

  • My post was obviously reconciliatory ... any bitterness you sense is probably your own.

How can I be bitter about the works of others unless my own self worth depends on theirs ?

Jake, you should mind your on work.

    —Miki, your friend.

  • Similar to the track The Grid on Koyaanisqatsi

  • yeah man sounds eerily similar to it...same kind of monotonous hustle and bustle rhythm...but still really beautiful

  • i think it is actually :)

  • This conjures up images of rippling and flowing water

  • Wow Minimal I love this!

  • I think this is the best track on the whole album. Really interesting texture and energy. It's your typical early Phillip Glass work but for some reason this one resonates with me more than most. Thanks for posting!!!

  • No problem and me too! It's the track that got me listening to Glass!

  • @saladshootavvv I totally agree with you.

  • orchestral acid!!!
