The beginning section of this composition can be heard in the "Natural Treasures" Object Theater of the Rochester Museum and Science Center (NY). It is played during the water scene...and I am so happy that I finally found it! YES!
@Xiphos0292 philip glass scored many of Errol Morris's documentaries, but I don't believe Floe was actually used in any of them. You might be thinking of some of the music he composed for Fog of War
I'm not very familiar with the theory of music but I love Philip Glass' style, his music, his way making fast appearing slow, his way to make simple melodies so complex, to conduct simple melodies from complex therories.
I don't like these recordings as their quality isn't as good as it could be and the interprepation is poor. I'm thinking about uploading the Glassworks I have even though they are not flawless either. I hope some of you could check them and leave a comment of your thoughts.
Glass once stated that he attends to the spaces in between the notes as much as he does on the notes themselves. Over the years he has fallen from his reverence for silence, and the resulting blur of noise is all but unbearable.
does anyone else hear in the opening theme the melody from the third movement of Sibelius's 5th symphony? i suspect it was an intentional nod from Glass to Sibelius.
This track will forever remind me of a certain time in my life. I had just bought my first car (used of course) and the previous owner had left a couple of cassettes in the center console, one being Springsteens Born to Run and the other being Glassworks. I still to this day thank the previous owner for accidentally introducing me to two awesome (but very different) artists. If I close my eyes when I listen to this I can imagine myself crusing down the freeway with the windows down. Freedom.

I remember imagining a fairy's playground when I heard this, dusk through a lush forest area all scampering about in some unknown game of hide n seek n then run like hell.
haha as some one who listens to technical death metal as well as compositions such as this I find it funny when people feel it is a little too chaotic for their tastes. It is mild to my ears.
I cannot believe you can be that good a composer that nearly all your pieces are amazing soul-grabing master-works !?! Phil Glass is a real genius in his style.
I think Philip Glass' music is more relevant than ever. With Facebook and the endless stream of repetitive information that is in essence just 0 and 1s, basically Maths, the sedate friendly but structured and automated sound of Glass is highly relevant.
This is partially the reason I stopped rocking in cover bands and started mutating minimalism, techno, violins, and pianos instead. Thanks for posting this; "Floe" truly changed my musical life in 1985. Peace :)
im sure if you locked someone in a room with this music blasting for two days, they woudl go completely insane.lol philip glass is great though, i like this.
this one took me a few times before I could really appreciate it listening it. I need to focus on the big lines, otherwise it'll makes me crazy. great music though!
I first heard this track in 1983 while living in S. Calif and was shopping for a trip to Hawaii. I had to buy it before I left and listened to it on my walkman on the beach over in Maui. Great woven fabric with lots of beautiful colors.......
@tedpas interesting you say that about the walkman. i read somewhere that glass wrote this work (i.e. glassworks) because he wanted to write something "walkman suitable". i guess he succeeded there with you! *grin*
I've looking for this type of music for so long. One that doesn't represent a certain ideology, doesn't make you feel like you have to idolize and emulate the writer (in a superficial way, i mean), and can still draw an emotional response from the listener. Thank you, Phil.
I write music and some have compared some of what I have written to Glass which pissed me off to no end. However, there is great value in this music, something I did not understand until now.
I write nothing like Glass—but I recognize this beauty.
Often it's just because Glass is the only composer they can think of. I get the same thing when people hear my music too but I think I'm as much like Glass as I am like Palestrina - not at all. I suppose it's a compliment though.
I think this is the best track on the whole album. Really interesting texture and energy. It's your typical early Phillip Glass work but for some reason this one resonates with me more than most. Thanks for posting!!!

This is one of his best; it's too bad the version with Dora Ohrenstein doesn't have a better recording.

There's a great version of this piece in a film called "The Church", it's truly fucked up. I've been a fan of Glass and Italian horror ever since.
