this makes me want to change from English dressage riding to Western riding <3 What a wonderful man and smart horse. I love how sweet and soft he talks to Trigger, like just as he's leaving and says "come on Trigger" and the horse nods his head - you can understand why they had such a partnership! Roy Rogers sounds like soft butter <3
@vixitrixalina It was a partnership, almost akin to Astaire & Rogers.. Just as Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards, and, in heels. Roy and Trigger had it like that; only, unlike Astaire & Rogers, Roy Rogers & Trigger never parted; that is, until age retired Trigger, who lived to be thirty-three..
My wife and I once encountered Roy at his museum in Victorville. There was nobody else there at the time, so we got a personal tour of the museum from Roy. After the tour, he took photos with us. This was one of the highlights of my life, since he was my hero as a child, in the 1940s. He was even a greater guy in person than in the movies and television.
@curiousgirl11 there out west , here in new mexico, I pro rodeoed 10 years in the late 70-s thru the 80-s then I settled in New Mexico, I live in Roswell , but work in Hondo , as a real range detective 5 nights a week , the pay is good and its a peaceful life, Im on myspace as russell the wizzard
Once I heard a commentator point out his unprecedented equestrian mastery and showmanship, I've never been able to ignore it. Polish on stage personified.
War Babies too may I add. We've been lumped in with baby Boomers, but at the time when so many men were off fighting WWII, the adults considered us quite special and separate.
The only fan letter I ever sent was to Roy Rogers when I was in 2nd grade. I got an autographed picture of him on Trigger in return. I believe I invited him and his family to come visit and stay at our house in VT.
@CelticSouthland That a HORRIBLE thing to say, why is it still on YouTube? Roy Rogers would be sad at your comment, he was a good, Christian man with love for all mankind.
Does it really matter? Roy and this Trigger are great...wonderful entertainment. Yes, there were several horses...but enjoy the nostalgic memories...and in these times we could use some positive role models.
Oh...I guess I will have someone post something negative about my comment. I met Roy as a boy at his museum...a true American Hero...and I love his 'horse' Trigger too!
In Solent Green if we were Edward G Robinson watching images of nature & life before we died....well old Roy, Dale, Trigger, Buttercup and some guy in a jeep with a dog cahasing him will be running for us to see.
This horse is Trigger II (a Tenn. Walking Horse). The original Trigger was part warm blood and part TB. This name was Golden Cloud before Roy got him. Trigger II did most of the fancy dancing. Both of them are mounted in his museum.
thats not the "real" trigger. trigger had only one white sock ,and its on hisleft rear leg. roy had about four triggers. the original he used for all close-ups and "beauty" shots. he was to valuble...
good to see old video clipping of roy and trigger, after many year i now have my own trigger, you can see him on my youtube posting, also on my web site, tex lavallee the western performer
Babyboomers only? I'm Generation X and love this stuff, so do many others of my generation...this great era of TV and REAL role models is not forgotten, thanks for posting!
Singing cowboys like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry were great. I'm more of a fan of westerns like Maverick and Bat Masterson, though. Of course, Roy and Gene were more than just tv stars, which is part of their appeal, I suppose.
For those who may not know, Trigger was a movie horse before Roy got him. If you've ever seen the movie "The Adventures of Robin Hood" starring Errol Flynn, he is the horse Maid Marion is riding when Robin and his men captured her and the Sherriff of Nottingham's party. Roy purchased him not long after that movie was released and named him Trigger.
I had the rare opportunity to meet Roy and Roy Jr. at the opening of, (of all things) a Roy Rogers Restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA in the early 80's. I was walking down the sidewalk and here came the two Roys walking in full cowboy outfits down the sidewalk. I was shocked, said hello, and followed them three blocks to the restaurant where they performed on a makeshift stage outside for 30 minutes. Wonderful to meet them and Roy was very gracious and sang well.
SWEET footage! Roy is a dream... just makes me smile to watch and listen. Trigger is AWESOME!! He starts and stops on a dime! And he's totally motionless while Roy plays guitar on stage! Thanks SO MUCH for this clip!!!! The good old days, fer sher.
Man was he cute or what! Trigger is amazing!! I use to watch his show when I was a girl. Just watched this movie Hollywood Canteen and had to see if this was here YAY it was!! Thanks so much!
This is a very "callous" video. =p

@vixitrixalina Great little piece of trivia: Trigger was the horse used by Olivia DeHavilland in the Warner Bros movie Robin Hood with Errol Flynn.

Was it the "real" Trigger, or just a Trigger imposter? Possibly a Hollywood extra?
Too much brouhaha over both Roy and his horse ... little mention of Miss Dale and her part in this whole play.

Trigger really was amazing. I've seen many a Grand Prix dressage horse that couldn't top his passage/piaffe sequence.
