chaos97 ,the cover makes it appear to be one long continous bag look at the rear of bag and you'll see gold fringe trim on scarlett cover we can't see the cap
@chaos97 the bass drone is an addition. Yes it looks like one of the old pipes made by the first union pipe makers. Either kenna of Mullingar or Hugh Robertson of Edinburgh in the 1760s. It could also be a conversion of a pastoral pipe set as the instrument evolved. Its quite rare to hear very old union sets being played.
I think the tradition uilleann pipes were small-bore sets (pitched lower than the more common D concert pitch). I'm not sure if small-bore D sets were around, but I'd suspect so. I find it really hard to get definitive historical info about these things.
Traditionally, uilleann pipes had narrower bores. It wasn't until the second half of the nineteenth century that larger bored "concert pitched" instruments came about. Narrow-bored pipes pitched in D were being made for quite some time before that.

Scottish Pipes are the Great Highland Bagpipe, While this video is of Uilleann Pipes or Irish Pipes.

is that a really old set? ive never seen a cap on a chanter like that, except once in an old painting i think.

That set was made by Colgan - made sometime between 1820-1840 (best estimate). It's pitched in B, as were many of the deluxe sets of the time.

I had a C-Sharp set made by J. Henebry, around 1920. It had just such a chanter cap. I believe that Jimmy has that set now.

Is this a small-bore chanter he is playing? I thought they are a rather new invention?

Mighty Sfuff. He's become an even mightier piper and a real role model for those of us who strive to keep this kind of music alive.
