There are a few things that you don't do in life. One of them is you don't try and remake something that doesn't need remaking, such as the Shelby Cobra 427. There's a reason why it was and still is in the top 5 best muscle cars in the world. And I know he says it isn't a remake, but you know, I know, and he knows that it is, he just wanted to take credit for American and British engineering brilliance.

The correct term would be Shelby Cobra, not AC Cobra. As for the notion that the Cobra was 'British'. The 289 Cobra roadsters were re-engined and slightly tweaked AC Ace's, but Shelby American shows as the manufacturer of record. Call it Anglo-American, and legally a Shelby product.

The 427 Cobra was another animal altogether, designed by Ford and Shelby American, with a body and chassis manufactured under contract by Auto Carrier. No different than AO Smith making frames for a Vette.

@SiouxGER This is little better than a replica ac cobra numb nuts, look it up, this is probably the most technologically advanced car to ever come out of a small tuning company. It has fully independent suspension, its made out of carbon fiber, and uses a special electrical system that is very similar to the systems used in Formula 1 cars that isn't used in any other car on the market. To add to that it also has EFI, 800 hp out of a naturally aspirated motor, and goes 0=60 in under 3 sec.

The real cobras (racing) were built by Carrol Shelby using the AC Ace with a modified body, suspension, brakes and of course engines. AC didn't build a "real cobra" until after Shelby ceased production.

Really? Shelby himself has said that the car's biggest advantage was how soft it was. The body actually twisted so much that the wide tires it carried stuck to the pavement at all times, which is what allowed it to carry such large motors.

he meant carol originally approached chevrolet . they turned him down then he went to ford. I saw an interview with carol, he said the 289 is a better everyday car. The 427 is too heavy, and tends to get too hot which robs horsepower. Iconic should have used a modern 4.6 supercharged to eliminate both. It can produce same horse and get 30 miles to the gallon in that light frame.

The Ac ace was a 2.3L V-6 and carol shelby, a racer of astons and the ace at the time, had an idea to put a ford 289ci engine in it. then they put the big 7L 427ci engine in. Its not american, just the engine, and ford have bought the name "Cobra" thats why the new cobras by AC are called "Superblowers". the suspension was completely redone, the chassis had to be substantially reworked and stiffened. the body was widened, and flared. the drivetrain was trashed and replaced. so yeah the car was crap had to be completely rebuilt and thats almost a direct quote from shelby himself-put that in your pipe and smoke it.

The history of the AC Cobra is that AC was British, but Texan racer Carroll Shelby came along and approached AC with the idea of fitting a Ford V8 engine into the AC. He also slightly modded the body of the car. So yeah part of its heritage is British but i would say it is more of an American car!

Originally, the car was the AC Ace, which was 2 liter (i think) and wasn't anything special.

Then along came carol shelby, with the idea of taking an ace, and jamming a huge engine in to it.

The ace body had to be modified to get things to fit and work properly, and then evolved over time.

So how english is it, how american is it? I say 70/30 uk/usa. We created the ace, which carol made into the cobra, which we then built.
