Sad thing is that Ubuntu is getting worse and worse, I tried 10.04 LTS and it's horrible, nothing works right. They seem to be taking steps backwards since version 7 or so...
@PCWizKid I've looked for good video editing apps for linux and i couldn't find anything. Linux is a great OS, i just don't think there is a large selection of apps for it...
the Disk Utility of Ubuntu 9.10 which I have too is almost exactly like Disk Utility from Mac OS 10.
Ubuntu 9.10 is the fastest version of Ubuntu I've ever used. I've always done the install inside windows option, and it still took as long as windows with 9.04, but with 9.10 it took like 7 seconds to boot up.
I some how removed my network icon from the top panel do you know how I can get it back. I have an older Ubuntu with the add/remove in applications so I see the box is checked for network manager but I still can't find the icon when I click the top panel :(
What if I install this OS on my main drive will it wipe out the files that I have on my recovery disk drive too? I was about to format all the the files on my main drive because I wanted to use ubuntu. But the problem is I wasn't sure if it's gonna delete my recovery partition files too! pleasse answer me soon!
Ubuntu is pathetic. I Installed this on my second HD to try it out. # no sound can find drivers (ac 97) # Monitor resolution keeps at 65 Khz even though Nvidia X is installed, no other options, # Ubuntu claims my other HD has "defective sectors" even though various other windows apps find NO errors, etc etc. And if you want to install or change stuff, you have to type code into a friggin console. WTF
@bicnarok all HD get bad sectors due to the natural oxidation of the spinning disc
Ubuntu is a lot more effective at detecting defective hardware but unlike windows which will hide it Ubuntu will tell you about any defects, just click the box to tell it to stop notifying you... it's normal for hard drives to get bad sectors after a time...
Ubuntu is a lot more powerful than Windows dude... but u gotta be intelligent enough to set it up, some people aren't...
@neb967 intelligent enough to code your own drivers, yep your probably right seeing as Ubuntu hardly supports any hardware, and those it does doesn't work properly
@bicnarok huh what are you talking about ? what does coding your own drivers have to do with anything I was referring to. Ubuntu supports a lot of hardware, in fact it's far more backward compatible than 7 or Vista is.
My old printer doesn't work with 7 I had to install all these BIOS & firmware updates to finally get it to work - with my Ubuntu laptop it just worked...
I work for Microsoft & I love their stuff - but when you get down to facts - Ubuntu is faster & less of a resource hog anyday
@neb967 Well Ive tried installing it on 3 different machines lately (1 laptop). On all it had no working drivers for the graphics (2 x Nvidia 1 x ATI), on two it wouldn´t let the monitor refresh rate go over 65 Khz. No Wlan for 3 different Wlan sticks etc I could go on and on about the problems. It looks good & I like the feel of it, but its so incompatible its sad, why don´t hardware companies support Linux?
@RealNeurotiq Cool - that's nice to know... the ONLY thing that I can't yet figure out mainly because I'm too busy is how to configure my iPaq to work with Ubuntu. Any ideas ?
i think that it maybe a proprietary unit, if work with ubuntu you mean access, you may encounter some problems. does your ipaq work with osx? do you mean recognize linux? cause it takes a lot of extra software to make windows see linux, but linux will see windows.
@RealNeurotiq I have a Compaq HP3760 iPaq it's REALLY OLD man (2001)... Linux does not seem to pick it up at all.... the iPaq runs Windows mobile... I figure I have to install Linux onto it to get it work properly but I have NO CLUE how to do that without turning it into a total brick...

@PCWizKid would u reccommend Ubuntu 9.10 for gaming? im tired of windows. i use my computer mostly for light gaming and burning movies watching hd movies and such.
@MrsRandomMadeMeDoIt You should get WINE for gaming. It's a compatibility layer so you can run Windows games :D. Just download the latest version from the Synaptec package manager

Can you tell me how that works, especially the installing of it and how to boot up in either of the 2 OS. Really need some advise. Thanks in advance.
@dovaje - Go to Best Buy or order the Thermaltake BlacX esata Docking Station and a regular HD. Then you can set the boot options in your BIOS to boot from that drive when you want to boot to Linux or back to your internal when you want to boot to Windows. It's the safest way to go and will have no effect on your Windows drive.
@TurboRonin83 - Make sure you have enough memory and drive space to allow the guest OS (Ubuntu) to make use of. You will have to set this up when you set up your Virtual Machine. There are certain performance and other limitations that may arise due to running this application in a Windows environment. One good thing is you can always remove the Virtual Machine if you don't like it and it doesn't effect Windows.
I run Ubuntu on an e-sata external using Thermaltakes BLACX docking station. Only have to switch drives in the BIOS when I want to switch back and forth between OS's. Keeps my Windows drive with space and allows me to learn Linux and play around with it on my own time without committing my system to having GRUB take over the booting.
I am running this on PIII Dell Dimension XPS T500Mhz 500Mb of ram. 100fsb. It runs little slow at times but its runs ok. You dont get all the bells and whistles. The computer is around 10years old.
YOu dont even have to burn it on a cd. YOu can just install it from the ubuntu site and have dual boot. I t worked fine for me when i dual booted with windows 7. Ubuntu Puts Windows To Shame.
it probably won't bcuz the wireless drivers are missing and u can't activate ur wifi :P that's really stupid.. I tried it and still there's no solution for this prob :( but it looks amazing :)
there is a solution, you have to enable the wireless (don't remember how to now) and then connect the laptop to your router trough a cable, and connect the wireless, then you should be able to use wireless ;)
oh.. ok.. and can you remember where's the how to at least... And because I've never done this before.. in my update manager says 'new released distro 9.10 is available - UPGRADE' If I click on that am I going to lose all my setting and files and do I have to use that howto for the wireless after upgrading ?
I used it on my Acer Aspire 3630 laptop, and it worked great (YouTube lagged, but else its fine) I used the netbook version, to set up wireless network, connect the laptop to the router trough a cable, google "wireless network on ubuntu 9.10" and then you should find it :)
Ok, i have to admit that until Ubuntu 9.04 i was experiencing troubles with the wireless card of my laptop (HP Compaq with Atheros wi-fi). But remember that those issues are mostly related with the hardware manufacturer for not releasing official drivers because of "incompatibilities" with the GPL and the license (mostly closed) of the manufacturer. Is not a problem of Ubuntu itself :p
what about intel video driver settings?I know they are built in ubuntu, but what about the performance and quality settings? If I want better performance than quality and vice versa,do these have settings?
You could of gone to a terminal and typed in "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf", enter your password, then look for where it says "800 600" and change it to the resolution you want. Like "1280 1024".
hey i duel boot ubuntu 9.04 and vista on my other computer..i havent been able to get on it cuz my charger broke..im not very techy and i was wonderin if im in ubuntu if i could just find a way to just "update" it and it will install it self or will i have to delete it and install 9.10?..sorry if this is a stupid question :(..i just hope this time 9.10 i can get my wireless internet to work :( :(
i love ubuntu i dont like this 9.10 , i love how my pci-e ati graphics card causes it to have a stroke and never reach the login screen .................. Yay there goes my plan to experiment with gaming on linux.....
windows 7 appears u gay bitch... ubuntu is piece of shit.. u asshoole.. windows is the only os that introduces new technology and everyone copies them asshole
how can you complain about an os with as many features and free software that ubuntu has thats completely customizable and FREE!!! with windows you would be spending hundreds on the os alone plus god knows how much all the software would cost, you may not like ubuntu and thats fine, and windows may have a few better things going for it, but thats only cuz they have millions to invest in it, but all in all ubuntu is a superior product.
hahaha ubuntu is far superior? u fucken asshole.. i will fuck u up.. bitch. have u seen linux software library, first of all .. all the fucken open source free software is shit useless just tries to be like microsoft but they cant. i have office 2007 and open office is garbage u asshole dont be mad cuz u cant afford shit go fuck yourself .. and yea i also like to play the latest games on my pc, so i can be cool

On w/7 and after its latest updates it fell over, and just cheesed off with all windows problems from 95 to present time.
Bought a Linux manual with the cd in the back and installed it on an old pentium 3 . Quite amazed really, it put itself on the internet.. But i realized i was wasting my time because the pc wasent up to spec, you know, you could hear it creaking.
Put the H/Drive on a pentium 4 pc and 9.10 running like a rolls royce in every way.
I currently have Vista, but when I try to log on to any of my accounts (including the administrator) I get the message "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." Safe mode doesn't work. System Restore doesn't work. I want to try Ubuntu. Is there a way to install it without logging on to a profile? If not, I'm screwed.
you dont need to go on windows at all to use ubuntu, just put the disc in and boot it up, you can run it straight off the disc or (for better performance) partition it onto your HD
I need help!!!!!! I want to delete linux ubuntu 9.10 and put windows 7 back on my laptop. I accidently deleted windows completely....I know how to dual boot....all i want to know is how to put windows on a laptop that only has linux on it. Help please!
pop in your windows 7 CD and boot from CDROM, then just install it, u can delete the partion for linux and get install over your hard drive it will completely remove UBUNTU and cannot be REDONE once u install windows
I googled it and found that someone got theirs to work fine by wrapping the Windows drivers, you should try that.
Here is what I do before buying or after having a problem. I google "ubuntu" followed by the problem/error.
Type into google "Ubuntu Netgear WNDA3100" and look at the first result, you'll probably have it working in 5 minutes. This is not Windows, the community has usually already solved any problem you'll ever have. If not, ask on the forum. We can all rely on each other. :D
As a new ubuntu user I have to say it is honestly a very good operating system. I have installed this on 5 year old hp laptop. At first it did not detect proper drivers for the wifi or nvidia drivers. So what I did is establish a wired internet connection thru the wan/lan port on my computer and headed off to the ubuntu support section where I found the solutions for both problems. I used the terminal(command line) very litlle it was more automatic then anything. Laptop is A+&wine kicks ass
Yeah, Ubuntu really runs well on just about any machine. It makes you wonder what Windows Vista and Windows 7 need all those extra system resources for.
works with more processors than windows 7 because it works with new ones AND old ones! i've installed ubuntu on an old pentium (3?) coppermine @ ~300mhz.
So i just double booted this with windows XP and it worked like a charm. However, once i installed it, it worked for about an hour and found several bad sectors on my hard drive. It then froze and now i can only access XP and every time i try to pull up ubuntu, it freezes or gives me some kind of error. Can someone help me?
at the moment ubuntu 9.10 is experiancing some difficulties with intel GPUs, I hope they do patch up the os, because, i have downgrade to 9.04, you can select gnome with no desktop effects, it is an option in login
i have a question, my firend told me that if i install ubuntu i need 2 download a program so i can play my games. i play wow, cs , half life and much more.
any 1 can tell me if i need to install a program or just install the games and run?
you need to download WINE. Its like a compatability layer. it does require some code work to get it working for some games. But most windows programs should work just fine :)
ubuntu 9.10 looks like shit now!

The computer is around 10years old.

it probably won't bcuz the wireless drivers are missing and u can't activate ur wifi :P that's really stupid.. I tried it and still there's no solution for this prob :( but it looks amazing :)
ssiso8 1 year ago
there is a solution, you have to enable the wireless (don't remember how to now) and then connect the laptop to your router trough a cable, and connect the wireless, then you should be able to use wireless ;)
augustuen 1 year ago
oh.. ok.. and can you remember where's the how to at least... And because I've never done this before.. in my update manager says 'new released distro 9.10 is available - UPGRADE' If I click on that am I going to lose all my setting and files and do I have to use that howto for the wireless after upgrading ?
ssiso8 1 year ago
@ssiso8 no
djmoindahouse 1 year ago

What graphics driver card you had ?
NawafLol 1 year ago
You could of gone to a terminal and typed in "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf", enter your password, then look for where it says "800 600" and change it to the resolution you want. Like "1280 1024".

OK. Thanks for all the replies.
The card is a SiS Mirage 3. Apparently it's a common driver problem.

spawnhell809334 2 years ago
how can you complain about an os with as many features and free software that ubuntu has thats completely customizable and FREE!!! with windows you would be spending hundreds on the os alone plus god knows how much all the software would cost, you may not like ubuntu and thats fine, and windows may have a few better things going for it, but thats only cuz they have millions to invest in it, but all in all ubuntu is a superior product.

Yea, Very impressed with 9.10 karmic koala.
Put the H/Drive on a pentium 4 pc and 9.10 running like a rolls royce in every way.

you dont need to go on windows at all to use ubuntu, just put the disc in and boot it up, you can run it straight off the disc or (for better performance) partition it onto your HD

My Netgear WNDA3100 wireless adapter and it doesn't work in Ubuntu 9.10. Is there any way i can get it to work with Ubuntu?
CoOkiEzWithDaCreAm 2 years ago

Laptop is A+&wine kicks ass

you need to download WINE. Its like a compatability layer. it does require some code work to get it working for some games. But most windows programs should work just fine :)
