The H in the jersey stands for "Hockey" for "Club de Hockey Canadien", which is where "The Canadiens" comes from and thats what the CH on the jersey resembles.

Theyre called the habs because someone made a mistake and said during a press conference that the "H" on the Canadians jersey stands for "les habitants" which is what the people in France use to call the people in canada in the 1800s, this mistake stuck and "les habitants" was later shortened to "habs"
