  • When you make a science documentary you should hire a narrator who can pronounce "nuclear" correctly.

  • Star Hustler music at 4:18 (Arabesque). Miss you Jack Horkheimer.

  • @6:26 middle figure at mirror.....

  • I hope it's not just a measurement error..

  • Since when does a faulty connection make things go faster than the speed of light?

  • @TheInterestedIn when doesnt a mistake happen and its a break though discovery?

  • it was an error as the person before me wrote

  • It was a loose fibre optic connection apparently, and once it was fixed everything went back to observing the laws of physics, haha. I just read that the other day.

  • @jtathaizzosh try rereading your source or reading a source worth reading

    quote:

"But the team also said they found a problem in the optical fibre connection between the GPS signal and the experiment's main clock - quite simply, a cable not quite fully plugged in.

In contrast, the team said that effect would increase the neutrinos' apparent speed."

    bbc report.

the problem seems to be in their timing method not the fibre optic connection.

the research will be repeated in may 2012 onward.

  • @advers1078 So a loose cable increased the apparent speed of the neutrinos, that is exactly what I said... P.S. I never claimed to be the world's foremost expert in the area, cool your jets.

  • @jtathaizzosh once the loose/damaged cable is plugged in well it would increase the speed of the neutrinos not reduce it. The fibre optic cable was a connection between the GPS satellite signal and the main clock, if its not plugged in full the data is reduced not increased and as such the main clock would be slightly off; I just hate when people put the effort to read the news and yet somehow be able to miss inform tht's all & like I initially said the problem is most likely in the timing gear

  • just a theroy but these particles are smaller than atoms there passing between them hence yes they will go faster because there is nothing to stop them... so light being a certain atom size and things being bigger than the atom of light light atoms are hitting other attoms in the vacuum of space aka dust etc and it maxes the speed out.. just a thought

  • 6:46 Thumbs up for the 3rd movement of Beethoven's Tempest sonata = D

  • hmmm....

  • 6:29 flipped me off

  • @kimbobrand7 lmao

  • There will be final observations being done in May 2012 to finally resolve the issue!! But, by now they think they made a measurment mistake.

  • I heard that they redid the calculations and found that there was no faster than light travel after accounting for the fact that the particles were traveling in a non-uniform gravitational field.

  • @charlesvan13 Nope, they redid the calculations and found it still correct.

  • so his ultimate conclusion was that the neutrinos took a shortcut through some sort of dimentional space? & then you have people saying that it was wrong the whole time because of gps? even if it was gps that failed, the distance reference should back that up but it doesn't, no - neutrino's & light moved much faster at the start of our universe, this has been observed, it's only natural to conclude that if cern was creating conditions like of that after the big bang then maybe they succeeded?

  • Their text scenario is stupid, if the neutrino is faster than the speed of light, then that means Einstein was wrong. So their text message lottery situation shouldn't take into account relativity. Bunch of idiots.

  • The zero point is in space and not the earth Where they meet

  • things being relative when a object traveling at more than half the speed of light passes me and I'm on an object travelling also slightly more than half the speed of light in the opposite direction the first object passes me at more than the speed of light, right??

  • @frost1947 nope, see the 'Twin paradox' it has to do with Newtonian mechanics, only the twin that has undergone acceleration will have its clock ticking slower and will stay young.

  • 33:35 is where the video gets interesting.

  • Turned out to be a mistake

  • Just this basic explanation blows my fucking mind. It's insane that he figured this out.

  • Light is, I believe a particle because it moves like a billiard ball; it bounces off something and then goes straight ahead. This is just what I believe; many scientist believe the same thing.

  • @jlr92958 it's the duality , it behaves as both a wave and a particle, and is also bent by gravity

  • @VERGIS92 Only if matter is in its path; then it goes around it using gravity as a stream.

  • We are a primitive race in the cosmos; we have who knows how much to learn and discover in science. Don't put anything in stone yet; the class is not over.

  • One idea is there are many ways to look at string theory; watch the presentation.

  • Did anybody ever consider that gravity surrounds matter and that matter does not create it?

  • Einstein's theories were based on physics of the early to mid 20th century; we have discovered many things that question his theories since then.

  • It's strange, whenever String theory is brought up cymatics is never encorporated. Why is this aspect of science silenced? Another strange silence of science is "entanglement" isn't this effect instantaneous making a speed limit a null concept?

  • @wiseyeffect Isn't string theory a hypothesis? Why do people talk about it as if it is fact?

  • One day I was doing this chick in the butt so fast it had to be faster than the speed of light I was like totally doing her SO fast.

  • @NEOSPORINZ Did you cum like a bastard?

  • 57:00 - yeah but the problem is - how many LHC's are there in the world?

  • Lol....Eienstein's paper had no references ....

  • No wonder this world is going down the toilet; nobody knows what to believe. there is total confusion on what everybody believes; no continuity.

  • Thanks for posting this. It is good to know that there is freedom from the shackles of Einsteinian dogma.

  • The speed of the neutrinos was compared to the speed of light in a vacuum. The speed of light used is wrong. The speed of light we use now is the speed of light in dark matter. Light travels slower in dark matter just as it does any other matter. Air is transparent and has an index of refraction. Same for water. Mass slows the speed of light. Once you correct for this the neutrinos are going just slower than the speed of light. Look at my channel.

  • in these comments: bunch of people with very basic knowledge in physics arguing about the complex nature of the universe and thinking they are right.

  • @lineikatabs Hahaha... Great comment.

I think that even the most honored physicists themselves have to sit back and wonder if they are right in the end, given the number of things that are involved in the calculations they use to base their findings on.

Scientists know that just as a fast growing child sheds old clothes that no longer fit, science also sheds old ideas that no longer fit the growth of what technology reveals.

I think they could learn from your post. A dose of humility we need.

  • He said the possibility to go back in time to win the lottery or kill our grandmother...... well its impossible to go back in time to win the lottery, but you can just kill your grandmother

  • this doesnt matter if anything is faster then light because non locality exist (when 2 particles react to each other immediately even if they are a light year away)

  • The discovery of superluminal particles will shake up science but we will not have to "throw away all the textbooks"; that is oversimplification.

  • I RUN FASTER THAN LIGHT

  • This measurement, considering its antiquity, method of measurement, and 17th century uncertainty in exactly how far Jupiter was from the Earth, is surprisingly close to the modern value of 2.99792458 x 108 meters per second. These modern values are obtained using devices called laser interferometers, which can very precicely pin down speeds and distances. " Kindly copied and pasted from "Curious about astronomy" webpage

  • "The first true measurement of light-speed came in 1676 by a fellow named Olaf Roemer. He noted that the time elapsed between eclipses of Jupiter with its moons became shorter as the Earth moved closer to Jupiter and became longer as the Earth and Jupiter drew farther apart. This anomalous behavior could be accounted for by a finite speed of light. He calculated that the speed of light was something like 2.14 x 108 meters per second.

  • If the S.O.L. can be hindered than it is not the universal speed limit.

  • @jlr92958 Speed of light >in a vacuum< is supposed to be the universal speed limit, and yes, it can be hindered (slowed down) by passing through matter, such as water or glass.

  • @dcs002 If space dust is removed, than light would probably go faster.

  • @jlr92958 Sorry to butt in, but space dust propels the photons....

  • @jlr92958 did you not watch the video? light goes exactly the same speed no matter what.

space dust would hinder the intensity of the light over time, it has no relevance to the speed.

a burst of light would be lets say a sheed of paper for example, particles of dust in space in contact to the light bean would be me poking holes in the paper.

I hope this clears your understanding.

  • @llparasitell

Wonder why light has to keep moving at it's speed all the time, why not slow down and stop in space in front of us. Any idea pls.

  • @utubenagoya light has no rest mass, that's what makes it different

  • @VERGIS92

Well, even if a beam of light was slowed down by making it pass through a medium, once it is out of the medium, it would move again it's same speed. Wonder WHY?

Pls search for "Using BEC to Slow Down Light" in youtube and see the first few mnts.

  • @utubenagoya light is electromagnetic wave not a balistic projectile powered by an initial kinetic energy, light as an E/M wave travels as follows: a magnetic field is induced, then this turns into an electric field in the direction of movement, then this electric field creates another magnetic field again, and in vacuum it does this process at C speed

  • @VERGIS92 Light is a particle!

  • @jlr92958 nope! light is photons, and they have ZERO rest mass, a particle must have rest mass or else it's not a particle

  • @VERGIS92

    Thank you.

  • @llparasitell This may be the natural speed of light, however, humans are know to overcome the natural laws of nature. It is just a matter of time before we learn how to harness the energy need to go beyond that speed.

  • @jlr92958 humans are knows to overcome natural laws?

name me one law that humans overcame in the past, if a law is over ruled than the law wasn't true in the first place.

and to answer your other question,

String theory is a THEORY, lmao its even named t-h-e-o-r-y

Do you even know what string theory is ?

Its a multitude of many theory to explain everything.

so far the math behind most of the theory makes sence,

  • @llparasitell The sound barrier, breaking free of earth's gravity; in the past scientist said these things could not be done.

  • @jlr92958 breaking the sound barrier was never a law, it was hypothosised and proved wrong, theres a difference because you are talking about a hypothesis not a law.

breaking the speed of light is mathematically impossible, unless like in the video states, there was a special circumstance, which is probably true.

this means e=mc2 is not wrong, because it is still right.

and because of how little the speed is over light speed in this situation, its most likely a measurmental error.

  • @llparasitell Part 01: String theory I don't know if you have watched this but it shows that string theory is a hypothesis at best; it has not been proven.

  • @jlr92958 lol? You act as if you dont know string theory is a combination of many theoretic multitudes, many many equations to explain certain things.

so tell me what part of string theory are you referring to,

because alot of it is theorized.

  • haha the title immediately made me think of brian griffin's book title

  • Just because einstein said something doesn't mean it was true, he got a lot of things wrong, but they act like if a jew says it is has to be true.

  • and as we all know there are galaxy's at edge of our known universe traveling at speeds way beyond light..

  • Don't forget dark matter and dark energy ? we know nothing about either and they make up 95 % of everything.. ok so we really cant say anything til we have found out a little about each of those.. case closed and i will be accepting thumbs up now !!

  • @koodahquake Dark matter and dark energy are simply place-holders. They are variables currently used so we can keep our current theories intact until we gain a better understanding of how gravity works, which might be mediated by them, maybe not. Physicists sometimes talk about them as if they were real, which we don't know. They are two hypotheses to explain observations. There is no evidence yet beyond these (retrospective and so far non-predictive) hypotheses that either exists.

  • @dcs002 Well the quantum world has many more shocks for us.. and nothing in the macro world really apply s..to me anyway.. plus I think they took a short cut to the mountain like dood said.. having access to "the Bulk".. If i where a nutreno and had access to other dimensions and was created from an unnatural event i would fuck with everyone too..lol

  • rofl @ 6:28 hahahaha, he flipped the bird! :D

  • New Killer Bomb...

  • the difficult we do immediately the impossible takesss a little while longer

  • No no no time travel is impossible! Because time doesn't even exist. It's just a delusion created by the brain, this is how we construct our experience of existence. Causality is an illusion. Existence is timeless, eternal, everything happens all at once. So "you" can't "go" "backwards"!

  • @Atlantean24 Time travel is possible but only into the future. Time is influenced by your velocity relative to the observer. If you were to circle the earth in a space ship travelling at near the speed of light you would travel into the future. If you did this for a year you would age 1 year, whilst earth and everything on it would age 10 years.

  • The speed of light 180,000 M/s in a vacuum, but space is not a vacuum. In that case I belief that the speed of light is variable. When light shines through water the speed of light will be 90,000 M/s. When light particles collide against matter the particles will change their speed. The universe has dark matter, energie and a lot of things we do not know. Space isn't a vacuum, so in that case light speed must be variable. A vacuum can only be simulated on Earth!

  • Nice presentation. I'm just sorry that the narrator doesn't know how to properly pronounce the word "Nuclear."

  • @georgegoss1 Mr smarty pants, every country have their own accent. Does that make any difference to the show?

  • We should not say it's impossible but that we believe it's impossible; for now we can not prove it either way. So don't state hypothesis as facts.

  • 0:50 travel back in time is impossible, even if you are going faster than light. I hate when pplz say that, they dont understand sh!t

  • Light Speed experiments should be done totally in space; our experiments are to find out if anything can travel faster or if we can achieve such velocities. We need to conduct these experiments within the solar system not the earth.

  • @jlr92958 Indeed my brother, we must conduct these experiments in space within and out our solar system, because space isn't a vacuum.

  • Concerning string theory, it might be applied to organic matter but not inorganic matter?

  • im thinking, and thats the only thing important!

  • ...loyte?

  • Neutrino: The bad boy of physics

  • time actually travels faster for anything on a satellite. Time slows down in a gravitational field, so although the speed of the satellite slows time down slightly, the distance from the earth more than makes up for it (the effects of gravity in this case are about 6 times more prominent). speed slows time down about 7200ns/day, lower gravity speeds it up by 46000ns/day.

I guess BBC thought that was straying too far off topic..

  • couple things dont make sense to me

    1. light cant really pass through objects, nutrions can, witch would mean it has less mass witch means less resistance, so it should theoreticlly travel faster

2 there whole concept of time travel. is using that same logic as that headstart paradox (not sure its real name). At 28:27 what would happen is ud simply be sending the text before they knew it happen. think of it like a delay in a tv. the event already happen, but they just got the message 1st.

  • @xTheDeathSaintx doesnt light not have mass?

  • It's another propaganda video in hope to make absurd Big Bang theory a bit more believable. It's politics. The person on the screen isn't even a good mathematician probably. No mathematician with higher education makes his equations without integrals etc.

  • @ibziur r u american or something?

  • @VXiuhcoatl Nope. And what it has to do with what I wrote?

  • @ibziur how can you expect most people on here to understand what you're saying?

  • @ibziur and u belive in the bible?

  • @Firelife3 and are you retarded or what? because that has nothing to do with what I've said. The Big Bang is an absurd. Just think about this. I think even your beloved bible is more believable. There may be no theory that would be worth of time, but even then believing in that shit is just idiocy.

  • Why would you even ask that question? Why does that matters for You? huh?

  • am i the only with the sound lag?

  • I love science and physics.

  • the flux capacitor is reallll someone build it

  • @problyout What makes you think that I will have not already done that?

  • @VXiuhcoatl because you havent

  • Marcus du Sautoy is bald now? I remember when he still had hair :\

  • To the creationists.... what does the book of genesis say about the speed of light. Does it violate the laws of thermodynamics?

  • @vamshiinhell let go of your ego pal and stop wasting your life trying to figure it all out and just let the truth come on its own like it always does

  • @vamshiinhell now, your going into unknown territory that they have no idea how to even begin to make a sentence on it.

  • i hope its true its really interesting

  • neutrinos may really do travel faster light due to its size, comparing it to an atom it is very small..if an atom is a "solar system" and the neutrinos are the size of a "golf ball" imagine that ultimately they have no measurable mass ..they can pass any atom while light can only travel w/ the presence of an atom particle..

  • @paulaaron777 whats the lights's speed?...

  • I guess I find it hard to understand why the threshold of the speed of light is the maximum speed an object can travel. Light is simply an object in itself traveling at it's own maximum velocity. Just like a bullet travels at its maximum velocity based on it's original potential for propulsion. I can't see why an object can't travel faster than the speed of light, it is nothing more than 1 object taveling faster than another, they are not connected physically.

  • @JessicaTG2008 If you fire a bullet from a moving car, the velocity of the bullet relative to the ground will be the velocity from which it exits the gun + the velocity of the car

If you shine a flashlight from a moving car the speed of the rays of light is still exactly constant, the speed of the car has no effect.

Nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, not even light itself.

And this thing has already been disproven i think.

  • @JessicaT As time passes and things change, it looks like everything is smooth and constant but it's not.

The true passage of events would look like everything stops and starts at an incredibly fast pace like a strobe light flickers on/off

If something travels faster than the speed of light, it is not quantum registered and has skipped actually existing for a small section of reality, that's why the constant C is maximum, it's the frequency of existence x the passage of photons.

  • @JessicaTG2008 light travels at that speed it does because it is a massless particle and all massless particles travel at that speed (speed of light), neutrinos are not massless particles although they have a very low mass, but still they do have a certain mass that's why they can't travel faster then light, in theory or "fantasy" to travel faster then light you have to have an imagenary mass hence the presenter mentioned Tachyons which are hypothetical and highly unlikely existent particles.
