@LuckyBambooExpert no it wouldn't kill a sensor if you shot video for hours upon end but time lapses are not shot in video. They are all with stills. Check philipbloom net and search for timelapse.
@philipbloom Oh ok, because all I've heard from people on YouTube is that you can't film long videos with a dslr because the sensor heats up and it can get badly damaged. So your positive this is false?
Nice work as usual! Was the time lapse shot done on the photo side of the camera? I take it it's not to hard to integrate the footage in post? My favourite shot was definitely the smaller ranch house at night, shot on high iso with what looked like a t.v flickering in the window. Towards the end of that shot It was like they turned on the flood lights all of a sudden? Unless it was an H.M.I that happened to be lying around. It's nice that George let some British bloke wander around the estat
I'm speechless. I just got my 550d and you sir, will be my very inspiration in making my next videos! More power to you and your awesome filmmaking! :)
I want to invest in a camera for film-making studies; between the Canon 5DmkII and 7D which one would you recommend? Your work is fantastic as always. Cheers :)
I dont know why people dont mention the T2i more. They have the same EXACT video capabilities (24p @ 1920X1080p) and are only half the price of a 7D. They may not have the exact same PHOTO capabilities, but most people aren't buying them for that. The video features are the same if not tweaked better (released after the 5DmkII and 7D). I was going to get a 7D but got 2 Rebel T2i's instead and some lenses. Same company, better deal
Certainly for the average householder in Britain, and like me who lives in a apartment, THX is null and void and overrated. Dolby Digital is running show over here. THX only works on a THX-certified receiver/amp when the Reference Level is at 85dB with 20dB of headroom which is the same Sound Pressure level (SPL) at the ' 0 ' position. The downside of this is at this Reference Level it's often too loud for your neighbours!

I've been to Skywalker Ranch and it has to be one of the greatest places in the world, but I George was in his office working on...dang what's the name of the movie with soldiers
Amazing video. I have been wanting to get a 7D and then they announce the Canon T2i for $899 with the kit lens and $799 for body only that is supposed to be equal to the 7D or extremely close. That excites me more given the price.
I will be able to buy better lenses now! :-D Of course I had to see some 1D MKIV Footage at night with only available light (Nocturne) and was BLOWN AWAY! Of course it is about $5,000. :(
I hope to see you test out the T2i if possible and of course the 1D MKIV! :-)
Don't get me wrong: i know we're talking about the "SKYWALKER RANCH". you probably don't want any tamrons on your camera bag. But holy mother of cher... i almost killed myself when i found out about the 9000$ worth of lenses. How am i suposed to get inspired?....
This is were I worked in the late 1980's & 90's at LucasFilm, LucasArts & GLEF! Great place & interactive prototypes & products memories & life-long friends!
What video codec was used to record this? Do the Canon camers use AVCHD? Surprisingly good images for such low bandwidth. Or were the images recorded on a better codec directly from an HD-SDI/HDMI output on the cameras?
Phil, this is spectular, and to get to work with these guys must have been Highlight 2009. I tell ya, you've inspired me to get my 5D2 on a Glidetrack and get shooting!
Oh, can somebody help the reviewer "flashgun" understand that these DSLRs are QUITE capable as Phil demonstrates here? And that Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro edits the video just fine? Thanks! =-)
With those cameras you don't need to use a 35mm adapter. 5DmkII has a full frame CMOS sensor and 7D gets close, so you already get a shallow depth of field with them.
@philipbloom Would you choose the glidetrack over the PocketSlider, or do both have their own difference uses? I'm currently in the market for a quality slider, and don't really want to waste good money on something which I could regret. I do love the motorised option for the PS, though with I could kit out a Glidetrack slider for the same price as a PS.
I don't understand how its hard to believe an SLR can do this. Have you seen stills from them? They've always had better images than "proper" video cameras it was only a matter of time until the images moved. Oh yeah and PHIL ROCKS.
People have been discussing whether us indie film makers should move to this format. Any ideas? Can't see this going down well when blown up on the big screen - still I guess it could be transferred to Beta-cam.
If you read Philip's blog you will see that George Lucas, Quentin Tarentino et al were very impressed when this was seen (in a rough edit version) on the 40ft screen at the Skywalker ranch. This certainly looks like A way to go but not necessarily THE way to go for all purposes.
Maybe I'm old fashioned - just can't believe an SLR can produce this. I'll take a look at how long you can shoot for with the card etc. and what software will edit it. Oh well here goes. Mind I guess the real test is us all seeing Philips Sony EX for sale on ebay. That'll be the day. :-)
what screen do you think this was projected on? he was at Skywalker ranch showing them that this format holds up on the big screen, check his blog entry
Stunning work! Philip is a master. This could be the definitive "proof of concept" for using dslrs in a a commercial film/video market. Still photographers will be encouraged to explore video as an extension of their skills. There is a lot more in common than many think.
