  • This is nuts!

  • Would shooting 30fps then conforming to 23.97 make panning from left to right in HD smoother?

  • How did you do a time lasp with the 5d or 7d? Wouldn't that kill the sensor to do a video that long?

  • @LuckyBambooExpert no it wouldn't kill a sensor if you shot video for hours upon end but time lapses are not shot in video. They are all with stills. Check philipbloom net and search for timelapse.

  • @philipbloom Oh ok, because all I've heard from people on YouTube is that you can't film long videos with a dslr because the sensor heats up and it can get badly damaged. So your positive this is false?

  • MUM! pack our bags were moving to skywalker ranch!

  • It's in Marin County near San Francisco, California.

  • Man, i keep returning to this video..

  • Now who says Star Wars ain't Beautiful?

  • uhhhhm..... im with the US CIA and ill need all your photography equipment :)

  • this is so gooooooooooood... a masterpiece indeed

  • Nice work as usual! Was the time lapse shot done on the photo side of the camera? I take it it's not to hard to integrate the footage in post? My favourite shot was definitely the smaller ranch house at night, shot on high iso with what looked like a t.v flickering in the window. Towards the end of that shot It was like they turned on the flood lights all of a sudden? Unless it was an H.M.I that happened to be lying around. It's nice that George let some British bloke wander around the estat

  • who make the music?

  • Hey Philip, awesome film!

Ive seen it about a hunderd times now! love the time laps night shots btw!

  • That was amazing, beautiful and breath taking. Masterpiece.

  • I'm speechless. I just got my 550d and you sir, will be my very inspiration in making my next videos! More power to you and your awesome filmmaking! :)

  • Awesome video. Better than all the Star Wars prequels put together...

  • what are you using to edit and what is your final format? I'm having trouble exporting out of Premier Pro. thanks Phillip and great work as always!

  • I want to invest in a camera for film-making studies; between the Canon 5DmkII and 7D which one would you recommend? Your work is fantastic as always. Cheers :)

  • I dont know why people dont mention the T2i more. They have the same EXACT video capabilities (24p @ 1920X1080p) and are only half the price of a 7D. They may not have the exact same PHOTO capabilities, but most people aren't buying them for that. The video features are the same if not tweaked better (released after the 5DmkII and 7D). I was going to get a 7D but got 2 Rebel T2i's instead and some lenses. Same company, better deal

  • @DarthDeez its not the same, the 7d has way better low light performance

  • A Cinematic Masterpiece!

  • Dejaría la cuidad para irme a vivir allí.

  • this made me go out and buy Holst's The Planets.

  • Ouch. My jaw just fell on the desk.

  • This is so incredibly amazing! It's very well made, keep up the good work :D

  • Is Skywalker Ranch open to the public?

  • @IchiCrack No

  • Sometimes a shallow DOF is actually not the best thing for shooting landscapes.. but the film looks great...

  • I'll never be as good as this. Might as well give up.

  • Wow. Brilliant. You are a true filmmaker!

  • Amazing video! Just beautiful! And is that George's house at 3:45?

  • Beautiful shot Philipl!

How can you record a one hour music concert with the 7D? I have that predicament.

    Thanks.

  • Certainly for the average householder in Britain, and like me who lives in a apartment, THX is null and void and overrated. Dolby Digital is running show over here. THX only works on a THX-certified receiver/amp when the Reference Level is at 85dB with 20dB of headroom which is the same Sound Pressure level (SPL) at the ' 0 ' position. The downside of this is at this Reference Level it's often too loud for your neighbours!

  • The first 3 seconds remind of Star Trek ost :) Beautiful footage.

  • I've been to Skywalker Ranch and it has to be one of the greatest places in the world, but I George was in his office working on...dang what's the name of the movie with soldiers

  • WOW! did you where in skywalker ranch?? so, you met George Lucas? and your video is amazing: the better quality I´ve never seen 5/5

  • what type of score are you using?

  • Amazing. I was speechless during the night sky shots, beautiful work.

  • Incredible!! Very well done

  • beautiful work

  • GEnius Phillip!!

Now we would like to see Phillip's new video with the custom firmware of the GH1!

    100mbits! 24native! 1080p Mpeg! Avchd 32mbits!

  • Genius Phillip!

Now we would like to see Phillip's new video with the custom firmware of the GH1!

    100mbps! 24 native! 1080p mpeg!

  • how is this connected to starwars other than the name?

  • Great work man. This was really nice.

  • If my 550D comes like 10% close to this quality I'm a happy person.. Picking it up tomorrow as 2nd cam next to my 5D classic..

  • Skywalker Ranch.... I cannot die without visiting it. Just that simple.

  • @philipbloom What lens did you use throughout this video?

I hate you for making me fall into an even deeper love of this camera...urggg

    Saving up that money now!

  • Nice, what post-processing have you used besides color grading?

    What tools/software have you used?

  • so for shooting video... 7d or d300? i'm thinking of getting one of them. help me.

  • This is the Venus movement from The Planets @creatinside

  • My heart.... it has found it's true love.

Truly the most beautiful video ever made in the history of mankind. I applaud you sir and thank you for giving us this truly amazing video.

PS: You should be a cinematographer right this instant!

  • this is so beautiful

  • amazing! Great video

  • magnificent

  • Amazing video. I have been wanting to get a 7D and then they announce the Canon T2i for $899 with the kit lens and $799 for body only that is supposed to be equal to the 7D or extremely close. That excites me more given the price.

I will be able to buy better lenses now! :-D Of course I had to see some 1D MKIV Footage at night with only available light (Nocturne) and was BLOWN AWAY! Of course it is about $5,000. :(

I hope to see you test out the T2i if possible and of course the 1D MKIV! :-)

  • just fantastically amazing.

  • Don't get me wrong: i know we're talking about the "SKYWALKER RANCH". you probably don't want any tamrons on your camera bag. But holy mother of cher... i almost killed myself when i found out about the 9000$ worth of lenses. How am i suposed to get inspired?....

    Completely blown away thou.

    Beautiful.

  • that's why u rent instead of buying. totally affordable. =)

  • This looks fantastic! The 7D is amazing.

  • what music is this?

  • Fantastic! I need to watch this again;-)

  • Beautiful

  • felix1131 - maybe you should read the description of the video, before making a fool out of your self in a public forum.

    Just a friendly advise...

Phillip! I´m blow away. Nice work, really nice work. I´m getting one. But I will buy the RedRock rig...

  • Just discovered Philip on the day I start my first serious photography course. Amazing and inspirational. Thank you Mr Bloom!

  • This is were I worked in the late 1980's & 90's at LucasFilm, LucasArts & GLEF! Great place & interactive prototypes & products memories & life-long friends!

  • This is nothing short of amazing. The camera work is phenomenal and Canon continues to prove itself as an amazing camera manufacturer.

  • What video codec was used to record this? Do the Canon camers use AVCHD? Surprisingly good images for such low bandwidth. Or were the images recorded on a better codec directly from an HD-SDI/HDMI output on the cameras?

  • great video! what song is this?

  • wow Philip, this is amazing man. what settings are you using?

  • what lenses were used? do you think the 7d is better or is the upcoming 5d firmware going to make it the one to choose?

  • Whoops, make that "spectacular"...

  • Phil, this is spectular, and to get to work with these guys must have been Highlight 2009. I tell ya, you've inspired me to get my 5D2 on a Glidetrack and get shooting!

Oh, can somebody help the reviewer "flashgun" understand that these DSLRs are QUITE capable as Phil demonstrates here? And that Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro edits the video just fine? Thanks! =-)

  • "this place is legendary."

  • Great job, amazing.

  • 00:48 Howard

  • Wow, that looks amazing, Phillip!

I've been flip-flopping between the 7D & the D300... I'd love to see what the 7D footage looks like w/out any post work done on it

  • check out my blog on Venice's People, there is an ungraded version there

  • nice pictures, and nice music

  • Congratulations, looks fantastic. Good job.

  • All I can say is wow. Phil is amazing!

  • LOVE IT favorite shot is at 2:26!

  • this is a screen saver

  • Absolutely beautiful! Gave me goosebumps...

  • Really nice, did you use the glidetrack for this?

  • yep!

  • Hey man Hollywood needs you because this shit is amazing to me. Did you use 35mm lens adapter?

  • With those cameras you don't need to use a 35mm adapter. 5DmkII has a full frame CMOS sensor and 7D gets close, so you already get a shallow depth of field with them.

  • @philipbloom Would you choose the glidetrack over the PocketSlider, or do both have their own difference uses? I'm currently in the market for a quality slider, and don't really want to waste good money on something which I could regret. I do love the motorised option for the PS, though with I could kit out a Glidetrack slider for the same price as a PS.

  • Amazing work!

  • I don't understand how its hard to believe an SLR can do this. Have you seen stills from them? They've always had better images than "proper" video cameras it was only a matter of time until the images moved. Oh yeah and PHIL ROCKS.

  • One of my favorites. I love the timelapses & travellings. You keep improving your techniques ; impressive & stunning shots. Congrats Phil.

  • People have been discussing whether us indie film makers should move to this format. Any ideas? Can't see this going down well when blown up on the big screen - still I guess it could be transferred to Beta-cam.

  • If you read Philip's blog you will see that George Lucas, Quentin Tarentino et al were very impressed when this was seen (in a rough edit version) on the 40ft screen at the Skywalker ranch. This certainly looks like A way to go but not necessarily THE way to go for all purposes.

  • Maybe I'm old fashioned - just can't believe an SLR can produce this. I'll take a look at how long you can shoot for with the card etc. and what software will edit it. Oh well here goes. Mind I guess the real test is us all seeing Philips Sony EX for sale on ebay. That'll be the day. :-)

  • what screen do you think this was projected on? he was at Skywalker ranch showing them that this format holds up on the big screen, check his blog entry

  • Did you read his blog post? Might change your mind.

  • Wow, amazing camera work!

My sister and I are in awe of the beauty of the location. =) May I ask where the it was? My guess is New England, or somewhere up there...

  • San Fransisco, Skywallker ranch....google it

  • It feels like I am there. Very Good! I like all your works :)

  • Really great stuff

  • Stunning work! Philip is a master. This could be the definitive "proof of concept" for using dslrs in a a commercial film/video market. Still photographers will be encouraged to explore video as an extension of their skills. There is a lot more in common than many think.

  • excellent

  • Your best work to date and an amazing story. Just goes to show it pays to be the best...

  • nice one mate, for your next video, could you get your hands on a lumix gh1 and put a review up, and a short film? thank!

    Adam

  • Nice video with nice selection of music as usual.

    Which one should I get,

    5Dmk2 or 7D

5Dmk2 is way better Stills Camera than 7D, But 7D has variable frame rate, which i need?

Got any info on 5Dmk2's firmware update?

  • ...Amazing... Your work is inspiring. Your videos are what got me interested in DSLRs. I will be buying a 7D very soon. Largely because of what I saw with your work. Thanks Philip!
