For those of you who don't know, this was the match that Agassi said he lost on purpose in his book "Open". He didn't have the stomach to face Becker in the final so he lost this match on purpose.
there is a difference between giving up because things are going to plan and outright tanking a match. if he tanked it, it would be a 3 set match. also, saying he tanks it means he is supposed to win over chang. chang is one of the best players ever so to say he wins if he doesnt tank is a joke. he said he didnt want to play becker in the finals? huh? travels all the way down under and doesnt want to win. none of this makes sense.
@robertk2007 im afraid to say he did tank the match, it says so in his book. He hated becker and becker was in finals already but he didnt have the fight and did not want to lose becker so, he "didnt try" in that match, even though he knew could beat chang, Hed rather lose in the sf to chnag than the finals to becker
@olaraay i know what he said in his book and based on agassi's personality i wouldnt doubt he lied either. it makes no sense to not want to face becker, its the opposite, you dont want to play a friend not someone you want to beat. who the hell travels all the way to aussie and then tanks a 5 set match? just default or pull out with an injury. whole thing smells bad
@robertk2007 i kinda understand why he didnt want to face becker, he hated the guy and the chances of him winning that match was slim in his mind... now if becker wasnt in the final maybe he wud have tried harder. I understand why he did that. he didnt have the fight and emotional energy to face becker and lose.
