  • where can i get one in the uk?

  • @speirso Don't bother you will waste your money

  • @andyarceye

tell me more, do you have one? what are they like?

im saving up to buy one, should have enough in may,

  • @speirso I have 1 for work to scan obscure objects for reverse engineering. After 6 months of scanning 100's of different items the results vary from reasonable to unusable.

If the object being scanned has any edge or surface that can be used as a datum then its faster and more accurate to manually measure.

The results of this scanner are no better than the £300 david laser scanner.

Scanners from Zcorp and other companies such as thinglab are way more expensive for a reason.

  • @andyarceye

oh right, thanks for that, is that for the hd version too?

ive seen some objects scanned with this and they look amazing?

so id be better off just sticking to modelling objects with autocad and 3ds max? with photo references then,

thanks youve just saved me £2000,

  • @speirso would you recommend the david laser scanner then?

  • @speirso Yes I have the HD version, the scan data in raw format is very good after spending a lot of time cleaning the then fusing the individual scans together. If you want to just save the file as something like STL then it is fine. I find it best to scan the object and use the scanned data as a references to model a usable cad model. Corners, edges and holes are never clearly defined enough to be usable. David Laser for £300 gives similar results with a stepper driving the laser.

  • @andyarceye

what do yo mean by cleaning?

i want to use it to get a high poly model to then bake on to a low poly model, im a games modeller, and this would was save me time for some objects,

i use zbrush, autocad and 3ds max, can you save the scanned file as an obj or a type that can be used for these?

  • @speirso Yes files can be saved as .obj files, and with all my ranting I should have really asked what you wanted to use it for. For your purpose it will do an excellent good job as you can work directly with mesh files. By cleaning I mean removing the noise from the scan (it scans more than just the object, the scan includes parts of the holding platform).

  • @andyarceye ahh good, thats what i was hoping for, if the david scanner came with sort of rotary engine instead of moving by hand or having to make something id probably go with it,

looks like im back on with the buying,

they are selling refurbished ones on ebay, for around £300 cheaper with full support from nextengine,

ill probably get one of those

or are you planning on selling yours?

thanks for answering all thes questions for me

  • @speirso Mine won't be sold as its is useful for using as reference to draw obscure shapes, my main issue is that it is advertised as a time saver for reverse engineering objects but in reality it saves no time at all and the end solid model still must be drawn manually. Before buying a refurb make absolutely sure that it has the full support.

  • Seriously learn some manners dude! Let the man talk!

  • What an irritating person!

  • That's just Leo's style, maybe it's anxiety or something... he jumps from one thing to the next really quick. That said, the Screensavers (his old show on Tech TV) is sorely missed....

  • Does anyone know his name in order to write a letter to him just asking why is he so jerk

  • This interviewers a fucking idiot

  • Omg exactly, I was thinking every 5 seconds that I'd like to punch him righgt in the face so hard to shut the fuck up....

  • yes he is......and he's a TECH EXPERT......That's what's sad

  • How to channel...... Can you figure out how to replace the host? My goodness who is this clown in the blue?

    Shut the f%ck up.......

  • F*@k!!!! Can't that presenter shut up so we can hear what this guy has to say?!?!?! He bearly starts a sentance before the guy cuts him off...

  • That's sort of Leo's thing. I think he's said before that he is ADHD...

  • Gah, that host! He's making it difficult to absorb accurate information on that technology.

  • especially cause he doesn't know what he's talking about:

    "is that a vertice?"

"so does it get the colors?"

  • He's one of those dicks that loves the sound of his own voice. Asks a question but doesn't want to hear the answer.

Man, record another demo... QUICK! ..and then delete this one... PLEASE!!!

Honestly, I had to stop watching.

  • sigh... i like leo laporte... I get what you're saying, but thats why he was fired from screensavers... so you guys kill me

  • I think his deal is that he is accustomed to working on radio or podcasts and is trying to fill air. Also he is on TV and probably need to take control of the interview, but yes, it's annoying as hell.

  • fucking annoying dude in blue!

  • I think the same than most of you... the man with blue shirt is veeery veery annoying and the scanner is amazing! Very interesting

  • i want it :D

Someone should tell that guy to shut up.

  • guy in the blue shirt is annoying. let him explain before you talk... TWAT

  • whats the name of thier podcast?

  • OMG can he wait till the guys done talking

  • word...That host is constnantly interrupting and talking over the guy!!!!!! he asks a question the guy tried to answer and they jerk just asks something else!

  • That host is an ass. So annoying! Imagine working with that nut!!

  • the host is stil around and not fired ????

  • why 2 guys are talking at the same time?

  • Sorry to say, but I'm totally against it. 3d modellers are going to lose their jobs over this. It's not fair. I wouldn't mind as much if the device wasn't affordable, but look at the price! I could buy this tomorrow. It's an amazing device, but give me one good reason why I should carry on studying 3d when companies can save ££££?

  • ummm.. what about this??

-you dont always have the actual object to scan it.

-since the scanner is dependant of the resolution of the cameras or devices used, and the 3d modeling is only vectors, its scalable, while the scanned won't have the same resolution

  • That's what they all say lol.

  • This is a shell scan, if you want internals you still have to model them. You could build part by part and scan them all in, but you would still have to put it together. This is just a tool to help 3D modellers, I dont see it taking to many jobs. And if it takes yours, then maybe you needed another profession anyway :)

  • The industry needs good modellers like myself so I doubt it will happen to me ;).

  • that would be great for game producers!!imagine the quality of the models of cars, weapons, characters ETC!!!!!i mean they would hve to develop so u can use more bigger objects, but ITS AMAZING!!!!!

  • **slaps the host**

Shut up and let the guy talk will ya. geez.

  • The poor guy can't any questions because the stupid host keeps interrupting 9_9

  • i think there interupting eachother lol

  • for real! how annoying

  • Mesh, Surface and Solids are the file types that can be created to generate tool path for your CNC mill from scanned physical objects. The guys at NextEngine are well versed at which ones are best for specific industry applications.

  • can the 3D scanned image be exported to a CNC mill to produce a "Hard Copy"

    Thank you,

    Cliff

  • For sure... goes right into Solidworks and then out from there to your CNC package.

  • Thank you, very much. I have some sheet metal car parts that are now obsolete that I would like to some dies made so I can "stamp" out some new parts.

    Thanks again,

    Cliff

  • Sheet metal dies can be expensive, even if you use cheaper material meant for stamping prototype parts.

Also, this thing won't do you very well because it is size. I don't think scaling up a panel scanned from a model car is going to give you adequate quality.

  • Mesh, Surface and Solids are the file types that can be created to generate tool path for your CNC mill from scanned physical objects. The guys at NextEngine are well versed at which ones are best for specific industry applications.

  • Absolutely Amazing.

I might considering purchasing one to add onto my business!

    That price is outstanding!

  • The NextEngine 3D Scanner can export in the following file formats:

    -STL

    -OBJ

    -VRML

    -U3D

    -IGES

    -STEP

    -XYZ

    -PLY

I am pretty sure that Blender can import an .OBJ, so yes its compatible.

  • Hi, borhole28

Thank you for the answer... .

    Bye all

  • Hi all !

    Compatible with the software blender?

  • By the looks of it, not directly. Blender imports OBJ, PLY, VRML so you'd be importing one of those. Just use retopo over the highres and you'd be good to go.

  • Hi, Quake3Bits!

Very well, thank you for your council.

    Bye!... .

  • what file type does this export as?

product great but price is #1!

  • the guy in blue is an absolute prick

  • stop interrupting dude ... let him speak

  • How do they do it for such a low price?

  • It'd be nice if the guy in the blue shirt stopped interrupting the other one constantly. :x

  • Sweet technology!

I personally sell replica firearms, "Airsoft guns". This will be GREAT to let people inspect it as a model. More ideas are flooding in now...

  • A friend of mine used this scanner for production work on The Mist, Fantastic 4 II, Even Almighty and others. The quality is amazing.

  • Leo L said it ... "Oh my god, this is going to Change Everything"

    Amazing Product, Amazing Price!

  • Nice gadget! I want one!

  • AWESOME Video and Product!
