I live in tucker county wv where this race was held and man it's a shame it got shut down. It was the most profitable weekend out of the whole year for the local economy it did wonders for us.
I love living in tucker county we still ride some of the areas that the race was on but a lot of the land got bought up by tree huggers. It's a shame this race is gone our local economy could use the money that the race brought every one prospered on those race days.
i remember reading about this in the old 3 &4 wheel action and dirtwheels magazines. love the old quadsports, quadracers, 4trx 250xs, and atcs. awesome video.
I have a hill like that at my house I'm gonna try to go up it after it rains WHICH ITS DOING =] hold on a second...... nevermind i'll never do that again anyone know where pickens sc is??? I need a ride to the hospital
I rode the last 3 BW100's but they took the 93 crossing out of the last two. I heard due to numerous fan injuries. Last one a fan lost a finger in a chain/sprocket trying to grab and help somebody. That hill was EASY for the first couple of guys. After that it was so greasy and slick, it may as well have been ice. Geat video! I also recommend Bonzai Blackwater and Mud Wars.
Dave Coombs was a legend and the greatest course designer ever. As most know, he died, but his legend and spirit lives on through his son-in law, Jeff Russell (of GNCC fame). The man who laid out the course and promoted the greatest race EVER is responsible for the popularity and success we all see today in the GNCC's and other off road series.
For the guy who asked where to get the FULL videos of these races, on the upper right hand side of this page, under "jjlightning" and the date it says "more info" - just click on that.
I just bought this video and man am I GLAD I did!! I LOVE it!! If you've seen this clip on YouTube and haven't bought the video yet - BUY IT! - you'll be GLAD you did!!
I rode this race twice on an xr-500 honda. Some of the toughest terrain I have ever seen. The street party the night before was pretty wild. Every obstacle you managed to get through, the next one was worse. Always remember the huge peat bog. Sunk my bike right up to the seat. It always rained halfway through the race, thought you were going to drown. Great times,
trust me man no they wouldnt maybe easier without spectators but those are some of the slickest hills ever riding up one is like riding on grease the ITP tire company even made tire just for this race the terrain is so bad
FrostyByte, I rode this race for 15 years, on a dirt bike, I can tell you this bank is not as easy as it looks. You ride at least 20 miles of race through bogs, rocks and very challenging terrain just to get here. You have crashed a few times, drowned the bike in one of many river crossings plus being stuck in mud up to your axles. Ar RT 93 one has to pick a shallow line in the creek with spectators trying to steer you wrong. Then you hit this wet slimy clay bank with people in your way.
from watching it again i know what your talking about ive hit hills like this.. some hills that are slippery like this are actually impossible until they dry out.. Id like to do this but id be afraid to hit someone with my bike.. I do stuff like this everyday almost but not for 20 miles i dont think. I got a 2007 400ex btw (my fourth bike)
glad to see this I was there that year with my cousin Rick Pickens that raced. I've tried to find transcripts from espn with no luck. If you have any more on this please share

does anyone know when and why it this race stopped running?
jolding 3 years ago
last race was 1993...
They had a breakout of e-coli on the property surrounding it and the power company who owned a lot of the land pulled their support of the race..
The "derelicts" also had something to do with it, the fans were just out of control.
Dave Coombs refered to it as a "insane asylum and the prisoners are running it"
VisionMXFilms 3 years ago 2
What's funny is the lack of skill of the riders. Mud or not, in a hill climb, you put your nuts on the bars.
Finlandia 3 years ago
no you don't. you obviously have no skill. if you lean that far forward you loose most of your traction. that hill is steep and slick.
