my dog has scabs under his eye and bleeds quite a bit when they come off its only happens once is 2 years but he was in a lot of pain should i take him to the vets or have you got any info that i can do to help him

@brutalkid1997xbox I would need to see the whole picture. That could be an infection, mange, or food allergy. Washing the area and putting antibiotic ointment on the lids..not eyes may help

What he said about the tests that dog food companies use I recognized from my college companion animal science class. I can't believe I almost forgot it! My professor had the same criticism of the test.

@duckbringer111 Most symptoms of poor dog food are skin problems, ear problems, obesity. The test is way too short to test for anything except really toxic stuff

do you have any raw cat food recipes?

@Elzbtharias No, I just feed my cats some raw chicken, tuna, and salmon a couple times a week as well as canned food and homecooked food. Raw diets contain meat and organs , bones, and veggies or rice. Home cooked contain meat and liver (50-80%), veggies or rice or both(20-50%), bone meal, and taurine supplements.

i'm also very curious about your opinion on raw diets, as i've been considering switching my cat over to a 50/50 raw diet/high quality dry food diet. i understand that supplements are needed (taurine). i'm just a little weary of salmonella and other foodborne illnesses associated with raw meat. thanks, dr. greg! happy new year!

@vintageyellowfinch Taurine is only needed if your cat is not eating raw meat. Raw meat is where taurine comes from. Cats are obligate carnivores that depend on meat to live. I think raw diets are great. I choose to feed like you do by offering raw meat as well as canned cat food and some home cooked food. When I offer raw meat I know it has just come out of the freezer or fridge.I also am a bit nervous about processing.

What do you think of the raw food diet? If you cook it, doesn't it kill all the nutritional value? Also you would have to get organic meat. The meat industry today is shooting the animals up with hormones, antibiotics, steroids, all sorts of crap.

@besthusbandpedro The raw food diet is probably the best approximation of what our domesticated predators evolved to eat in the wild. I feed my dogs raw chicken,salmon, tuna, shrimp several times a week and home cook the rest of the time. I make sure my dogs eat a variety of foods for the best nutrition.
