I actually just did this today, based on hearing about it, and came to look it up to see what that pole was called and how it *should* have been done (since I now know I should have furled the jib first - that'll make it much easier when sailing single-handed as I usually do. Today I had a guest to hold the tiller and help pull the sheets as needed.)
It really is easy once you do it, if I'd seen this video before I'd have done it already.
Now I get it....Thanks, I can't tell you how much I wrestle with my FORESPAR Whisker Pole in the shifting winds of the Columbia River (while dodging PWC's) here in Portland. This method makes all the sense in the world. Can't wait to try it. p.s. If you need the FORESPAR tech support .... they are fantastic. I just purchased and shortened a used Spinnaker Pole and they walked me right thru it....
Glad you liked it. I learned a lot shooting it! And like you, I learned to sail dodging those jet skis on the Columbia River (I now live in the San Juan Islands). And, yes, Forespar is a good company.
OK now I really envy you, Sailing the San Juan's.... We bought our boat from some nice folks that lived at Fish Creek on the southern tip of San Juan Island. Kept it in Anacortes for a few months before sailing down to the Columbia and on to Portland. I could easily spend a lifetime sailing the islands. I did use the video techniques most of the 100 miles back up the river to Portland and it was fantastic....We made some of the best time ever on the trip back.
Why buy this when I can make one out of wood?
