  • Muy bueno, muy expresivo

  • Unbelievable Voice! Shame on those who criticized him based on "flawed Technique". My ears don't care about technique when I hear the most exceptional voice in recorded history!

    Italocanadese48

  • very powerfull and amazing, i thing the best

BRAVO MAESTRO.

  • GRANDE MARIO

  • Such a perfect technique. It feels you are being exploded out of your seat. What a time to be an opera fan. Callas, Corelli, Del Monaco, all working at the same time. Anyone who saw these titans of singing live, please share.

  • EL MÁS GRANDE TENOR DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS !!!!

  • WOW!!!

  • great power but Corelli is better.

  • brividi

  • Grande , unico , inarrivabile , DIVINO !!!

  • Beautiful! So powerfull an full of passion... one and only.

    unico inarrivabile,insuperabile ......!!!!

  • Mario del Monaco was such an amazing singer, and just when I think I know his singing, he surprises me. Here is a much-maligned singer who because of his tremendous vocal power is often depicted by nay-sayers as being artistically insensitive, only capable of "loud" singing. Yet in this we see an artist supremely in control of his voice giving one of the all-time greatest performances of one of the most frequently performed arias. Simply magnificent! Thank you for this!

  • He is the best ever, what a powerfull voice !!!

  • PERFECTION !

  • Volcanic, but this particular aria was "owned" by Franco Corelli!!!!

  • @DonPaolissimo Ever hear Caruso 1904? As much as I like the versions done by del Monaco and Corelli, I prefer Caruso and Bjorling on this aria.

del Monaco is a bit more dramatic than Corelli. I like them both in several other arias.

  • damn this guy must have a huge hog after pulling that off

  • Like so many other diamonds in the operatic canon, this aria brings out the individual brilliance in singers numberless. Each great singer is fabulous.

  • One of the best voices for E lucevan le stelle!

  • My top pick for the most dramatic voice ever.

  • @MammaRoma64 Già...di inenarrabile potenza e candore

  • fabulous, many thanks, with Di Stefano, and Corelli, Del Monaco made up my 3 greatest tenors of all time.

  • @281308ful Really, where do you put Bjorling, Gedda, Kraus, Pavarotti, Caruso and so on? I'm just saying!

Ih Ih

  • Quest' aria rappresenta , a mio avviso , l' essenza stessa dell' opera lirica (drammatica) italiana ....

  • Comment removed

  • "Intonatura" ??? Cos'è? Un sinonimo tra "intonaco e pittura"?

  • @TheReby68 hehehe volevo scrivere intonazione e/o stonatura e ho fatto una fusion :))

  • una voce enorme...

  • del monaco mitico

  • Trema la terra!!

  • This is beyond great singing, it is magnificent acting.

  • Im proud that his son Claudio lives in Serbia!

  • me thinks this is prerecorded...

  • @JockamoGoon Well since the very next frame is the beginning of "Ch'ella mi creda" I would say that you are probably right

  • Maybe the young tenor Jonas Kauffman could be the next Mario del Monaco of the new generation of this kind of singers.

  • @nayelinesme I kinda doubt it, and he's not young anymore. he's 40+ years old haha. I liked him when he was young but I dont think he's in MDM's league.

  • @nayelinesme If he gets his voice together yes. But he has some seeerious vocal problems that need addressing. As do most singers of today.

  • heartstopping

  • this is no earthly voice, bravo maestro.

  • To all the critics, if it's so easy you try and do it.

  • maybe the greatest performance ever!!!!

  • I didnt know a human voice could have such power!

  • @mumra715 Some says that he had the most dramatic voice of all time. I agree

  • @petion2010

It's a close call between him and Corelli. But I give Corelli the edge.

  • @MrZeitun I thought Corelli was a Lyrico-Spinto

  • @petion2010

I don't know. Spinto is something I think even the experts don't always agree on. Is Angela Gheorghiu a spinto? Is Jonas Kaufmann a spinto? In Corelli's case, I don't htink he was a spinto. But he had such power and such emotional depth and sometims dark color he could have been tagged a spinto. Has he ever been? I just think he was a dramatico tenor with lightness when needed.

  • @MrZeitun It's interesting. But I've never heard Corelli classified as a Dramatico. But you have some interesting point.

  • @MrZeitun I think Corelli Caruso Tucker Martinelli Merli were truly spinto tenors.Perhaps Corelli was a spinto tenor with darkness when needed.Del Monaco was a true dramatic tenor as was Zenatello Paoli Tamagno. Martinelli did sing some dramatic roles, but the dramatic Otello took its toll over a period of time,Del Monaco and Zenatello sang over 400performances of Otello and were able to sustain their dramatic quality into their old age,Corelli's voice was darker on records than it was Live.Enjoy

  • 9 people have no soul

  • magic...........

  • No other aria demonstrates the Existential Dilemma as well.

  • MDM was a very BIG TENOR !!!!

Incrivel e maravilhoso

  • Such power & passion!!! His death is a true loss!!!

  • He is not imitating a Tenor and he is not sounds like so.

He is a real dramatic tenor and most likely the best ever who put his feets on this planet!

  • The Voice!

  • DA BRIVIDI!

  • E Grande!

  • One of the best roles of Cavarodossi

  • Comment removed

  • de que año es esta grabacion????

  • Entre los mejores de todos los tiempos. Muy emotivo; extraordinario.

  • Awesome

  • I was impressed that he was a short man. Really impossible to figure out, expecially considering his strong voice!

  • @sapphronlibero about 5ft10 ?

  • @topmeat69

don't know. I just saw him in some talk show in the TV and could compare him to other people who were just standard tall-

possibly he was 5ft 10 or 20, not more

  • @sapphronlibero Lots of tenors are small barrels of men! One of the reasons that Sutherland liked Pavarotti so much was because he was tall and she didn't tower above him!

  • MDM all powerfull !!!

  • GRANDISSIMO! IMMENSO!

  • Oneguin65 wielkie dzięki za WIELKIEGO CUDOWNEGO Mario Del Monaco.Pozdrawiam Serdecznie

  • Mario to obraz dramatycznej miłości to ból jego istnienia.

  • 1:44-1:46

  • the best among best

  • SIMPLEMENTE MAGNIFICO

  • HE WAS NOT A BIG MAN BUT HAD A VERY BIG VOICE-- i HEARD HIM SING OTELLO IN HOUSE AND WILL NOT FORGET IT AND YES HE WAS A DRAMATIC TENOR FOR REAL.

  • ahhhhh he was great, what a voice, what a character

QEPD.

  • This recording should be heard by anyone who claims that Del Monaco had to scream all the time. Here we have the greatest dramatic tenor of the past century singing sweetly with a sensational pp and a snooth lyric line.

  • Brilliant. Stunning how powerful his voice is. Del Monaco was definitely one of the greatest tenors ever.

  • It's probably right.

However, he is/was a self-absorbed singer, which often leads to that he seems to miss his surroundings, which in turn leads to a kind of insensitivity.

  • Bravo Maestro !!!!! Bellisimo !!!

  • That was a masterful performance! Why? Because that was real legato singing. He sang on the vowels and rarely pronounced the consonants. He emphasized the mm in "Mai tanto la vita!" for effect. This is what masters do. Many do not give MDM the credit that he so justly deserves.

  • The great!

  • Having stood on the "roof" of the San Cec iela where this action took place in the opera I was tempted to burst into song, however sense prevailed and I left it to the experts like De Monaco to do the honours.Brilliant

  • The sheer emotion in this song gives me shivers. Amazing singer.

  • OMG ! is all i can say...

  • BRAVISSIMO !!!!! Interpretazione meravigliosa !!! Voce inarrivabile !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the first time I really "get" Monaco and why so many love him. THIS rendition is out of this

world in vocal sound, emotion, phrasing, acting.

    Wow!

  • Grandissimo atore di opera.

  • Stupendo! Non una sbavatura!!!

    A pieni voti!

    B R A V O !

  • MARIO del MONACO...

..he has EVERYTHING what any man would like to have..:-)

..and the GREATEST !!! talent ..

You can't simply listen to him,but co-experience his feelings ..

    ..and ADMIRE HIM :-)

  • Perfect!!

  • this man is one of the early destroyers of the myth that great tenors have to be embarrassingly fat... "busted" (mythbusters)

  • hey joe7 thats the funniest thing ive ever seen on youtube. dont worry about the hate, i get so much of it i could export it.

  • i may get some hate hear, but i feel like all old school tenors besides lanza never used consonants, then just put out vowels and expected the audience to understand what they were saying. del monaco in particular.

  • @Joestn77 i can hear the last "t" in vita fairly well consider the age of the recordings too

  • yes, but what about the couple phrases before it?

  • @Joestn77 i actually think its the recording because most singing teachers and surely mine put so damn much emphasis on consonants they are as you say essential for understanding what one says his voice is very loud consonants arent that loud but still you might have a point

  • @Joestn77 As a singer. You are suppose to pronounce everything. However as a opera singer you should just touch the consonants and not enficise the consonants. The beauty comes on the vowels.Del MONACO had excellent diction and pronunciation, Tucker really hits the consonants hard and rolls his R's, which for me is really not appealing. However Tucker did do some wonderful singing in Butterfly duet where he sings more Italianized than when he sings other things where he is pounding the consonants

  • MDM is amazing. His powerful, dark voice and the interpretation are thrilling.

  • SOOO SEXY!!!

  • ez csúcs!

  • Incredible power. Thrilling.

  • Great stuff. He looks so much like Christopher Plummer here.

  • bravo !!!

  • tenìa micròfono puesto? creo que no tenìa, cuàntos podrìan cantar hoy en dìa asì?? increible!!! genial!!

  • No, no tenia microfono puesto.

  • He almost sounds like a Baritone imitating a Tenor! This is a real Dramatic Tenor!

  • Totally agree. Del Monaco probably had a heavier tone than lyrical verdi baritones like De Luca and Cappuccilli.

  • Oh, for sure Del Monaco is a Dramatic Tenor. There's no doubt.

  • @boxingin "in this age of undersized voices, these recordings will remind us in the years to come the true sound of the Dramatic Tenor" George Jellinek

  • @topmeat69 Agreed...

Seems like most things are watered down nowadays.... LOL!!!

  • @boxingin

His name is MARIO DEL MONACO !!!

  • @boxingin That`s right! Thanks.

  • @nayelinesme You're welcome!

  • It is difficult for a voice that powerful and resonant to drop to a soft, melodic level without losing the note. Caruso was one of the few who could. The real question is: can Mario find the emotion, can he serve the moment within his own timbre, and I say 'yes.' Del Monaco could never display the sublime sweetness of DiStephano or Gigli, Pavarotti or Bjorling. But no one had the power and majesty of Del Monaco, except Caruso. Rather than criticize the different voices, let's relish them.

  • What a tenor, what a voice, what an artist!

  • @andyroma72 it's an A natural not a B flat. Enjoy

  • You know what I hate? When people say del Monaco was not capable of singing softly. This clip shows that he was!!!

  • people who say he cant sing softly mean piano. del monaco had a bad pianissimo, very bad.

  • If a man had a voice like DelMonaco why would they want to sing pianissimo like all the other singers? His Pianissimo is relative to HIS forte,it was more than a very auidable voice. Not to worry in the near future they all will use microphones.

  • I hate that too! He just sang mainly dramatic parts where soft singing is not as frequent.

  • Does anyone know when this was recorded?

  • this version was recorded for the Tv biographie of Puccini,in the year 1974

  • 1959. for DECCA - complete recording with Tebaldi and London. Ultimate Tosca!

  • DECCA 1959

  • Wow! When and where was this?

  • nothing comes across like the original language its written in. Get straight.
