Unbelievable Voice! Shame on those who criticized him based on "flawed Technique". My ears don't care about technique when I hear the most exceptional voice in recorded history!
BRAVO MAESTRO.
Such a perfect technique. It feels you are being exploded out of your seat. What a time to be an opera fan. Callas, Corelli, Del Monaco, all working at the same time. Anyone who saw these titans of singing live, please share.
Mario del Monaco was such an amazing singer, and just when I think I know his singing, he surprises me. Here is a much-maligned singer who because of his tremendous vocal power is often depicted by nay-sayers as being artistically insensitive, only capable of "loud" singing. Yet in this we see an artist supremely in control of his voice giving one of the all-time greatest performances of one of the most frequently performed arias. Simply magnificent! Thank you for this!
Like so many other diamonds in the operatic canon, this aria brings out the individual brilliance in singers numberless. Each great singer is fabulous.
Quest' aria rappresenta , a mio avviso , l' essenza stessa dell' opera lirica (drammatica) italiana ....
@nayelinesme I kinda doubt it, and he's not young anymore. he's 40+ years old haha. I liked him when he was young but I dont think he's in MDM's league.
I don't know. Spinto is something I think even the experts don't always agree on. Is Angela Gheorghiu a spinto? Is Jonas Kaufmann a spinto? In Corelli's case, I don't htink he was a spinto. But he had such power and such emotional depth and sometims dark color he could have been tagged a spinto. Has he ever been? I just think he was a dramatico tenor with lightness when needed.
@MrZeitun I think Corelli Caruso Tucker Martinelli Merli were truly spinto tenors.Perhaps Corelli was a spinto tenor with darkness when needed.Del Monaco was a true dramatic tenor as was Zenatello Paoli Tamagno. Martinelli did sing some dramatic roles, but the dramatic Otello took its toll over a period of time,Del Monaco and Zenatello sang over 400performances of Otello and were able to sustain their dramatic quality into their old age,Corelli's voice was darker on records than it was Live.Enjoy
@sapphronlibero Lots of tenors are small barrels of men! One of the reasons that Sutherland liked Pavarotti so much was because he was tall and she didn't tower above him!
This recording should be heard by anyone who claims that Del Monaco had to scream all the time. Here we have the greatest dramatic tenor of the past century singing sweetly with a sensational pp and a snooth lyric line.
However, he is/was a self-absorbed singer, which often leads to that he seems to miss his surroundings, which in turn leads to a kind of insensitivity.
That was a masterful performance! Why? Because that was real legato singing. He sang on the vowels and rarely pronounced the consonants. He emphasized the mm in "Mai tanto la vita!" for effect. This is what masters do. Many do not give MDM the credit that he so justly deserves.
Having stood on the "roof" of the San Cec iela where this action took place in the opera I was tempted to burst into song, however sense prevailed and I left it to the experts like De Monaco to do the honours.Brilliant
i may get some hate hear, but i feel like all old school tenors besides lanza never used consonants, then just put out vowels and expected the audience to understand what they were saying. del monaco in particular.
@Joestn77 i actually think its the recording because most singing teachers and surely mine put so damn much emphasis on consonants they are as you say essential for understanding what one says his voice is very loud consonants arent that loud but still you might have a point
@Joestn77 As a singer. You are suppose to pronounce everything. However as a opera singer you should just touch the consonants and not enficise the consonants. The beauty comes on the vowels.Del MONACO had excellent diction and pronunciation, Tucker really hits the consonants hard and rolls his R's, which for me is really not appealing. However Tucker did do some wonderful singing in Butterfly duet where he sings more Italianized than when he sings other things where he is pounding the consonants
@boxingin "in this age of undersized voices, these recordings will remind us in the years to come the true sound of the Dramatic Tenor" George Jellinek
It is difficult for a voice that powerful and resonant to drop to a soft, melodic level without losing the note. Caruso was one of the few who could. The real question is: can Mario find the emotion, can he serve the moment within his own timbre, and I say 'yes.' Del Monaco could never display the sublime sweetness of DiStephano or Gigli, Pavarotti or Bjorling. But no one had the power and majesty of Del Monaco, except Caruso. Rather than criticize the different voices, let's relish them.
If a man had a voice like DelMonaco why would they want to sing pianissimo like all the other singers? His Pianissimo is relative to HIS forte,it was more than a very auidable voice. Not to worry in the near future they all will use microphones.

You know what I hate? When people say del Monaco was not capable of singing softly. This clip shows that he was!!!
leadoffeohippus 2 years ago 3
people who say he cant sing softly mean piano. del monaco had a bad pianissimo, very bad.
stybboon 2 years ago
If a man had a voice like DelMonaco why would they want to sing pianissimo like all the other singers? His Pianissimo is relative to HIS forte,it was more than a very auidable voice. Not to worry in the near future they all will use microphones.

I hate that too! He just sang mainly dramatic parts where soft singing is not as frequent.
