  • I love the majic trick where during the censing of the altar the bishop takes of his hat folds it and then picks it up and its a book and later suddnely its a hat again which he places on his head.

    Truely a divine mystery!

  • What was the occasion? Why so many bishops? Was it a dedication of a new church building or something like that?

  • What is this beautiful hymn? and in which hymnal may I find it?

  • I have to know the name of this hymn! Please tell me promptly!

  • What's the name of this hymn? I'm Roman Catholic, but I still think you guys' church preserves many of our customs.

  • After many years of observation (almost 15 to be exact) my wife and I were confirmed in the Episcopal Church this past Mother's Day. We have been Christians for over 30 years. We have journeyed from Baptist through many other denominations only to find the Anglican worship to be paramount among Christian Churches. The worship along with their Reformed Theology makes for a tradition next to none. Being Anglo-Catholic-Protestant, and Puritan-Calvinist is a lost breed in this Day and Age...peace

  • Many thanks for this. There are details to quibble about but it captures the feeling of Anglo-Catholic worship especially with that hymn being sung. And yes, it's nicer than mainstream RC in many places but Pope Benedict is trying to make it more like this again.

  • Very nice liturgy, you anglo catholic brothers in faith!

  • Beautiful! I'm from melbourne and I don't really understand why so many churches in melbourne stopped facing east (including the one i go to).

  • from Canada protect the Anglo=Catholic faith

  • i hate to admit it....these anglican services are better than the low catholic services.

  • such a beautiful vision of heaven, evrything in order and mystical, thank you.

  • that very first picture kinda startled me.

  • Quite simply this is not pedestrian enough for RC's. After years as a music director at a large RC church of 6000 members it was like a breath of fresh air to be back in TEC. This kind of worship isn't practiced in the RC church. The music must be pastoral and singable by all. We were never allowed to do Latin and Rite I services would out of the question. It's nice to have a chance and the diversity that we as Episcopalians/Anglicans have. Guard it well!

  • Wonderful liturgy - but as long, as the anglican church will continue to ordain women till priesthood, there will be unfortunately hindrances on the way to reunification!

  • reunification with whom??,

if you mean with the roman church, i believe not many anglican people really want that, we are doing quite well on our own, thank you

  • As a former High Anglican turned Catholic, I'm heartened beyond words that the Anglican High Mass is still being celebrated, and still elevating souls.

Keep on posting more Anglo-Catholic videos, PLEASE!

  • Yes, what is the name of the hymn being sung. It is very nice, though very unfamiliar.

  • Re: Hymn name - the tune is 'Rouen' see below for details of words:

The text was especially composed for St Peter's Eastern Hill by former Bishop of St Arnaud, Allen E. Winter. It was used at the Patronal High Mass as a Procession hymn - but I have stitched various parts of the liturgy to it as a 'backing track'. For reasons of length I had to cut one verse out. I've included the text in previous comments (8 months ago) - see 'all comments'

    Glad you enjoy it!

  • I sang in the choir there when I lived in melbourne in 1980. Always drop in for a visit and to light a candle when I'm back.

    It's a wonderful church .

  • Can someone tell me the name of the hymn being sung? I can't recall which hymn it is.

    Thanks

  • Gorgeous worship.

Before joining the Anglican Church I felt some what of a emptiness inside during the Evangelical service...but then after seeing the liturgy I felt in my heart that this is how worship is supposed to look.

  • I was Roman Catholic before becoming Anglican but come from an Evangelical family. I've attened my families churches a few times out of respect for them and found the Evangelical service to be empty to. It was very unorganized and didnt even feel like church.

  • Hm, weird. I am in training to be an Anglican priest right now, though I do enjoy all of this high mass and liturgy, the thing I miss the most is the disorganization outside of the church. I'd love to run the stereotypical Baptist service many times, but many other times I know that this is where I was meant to stand.

  • love it...I attend the e & b at my own parish on occasion and this is beautiful to see. thanks for posting! God bless.

  • I sing in the high mass choir of my cathedral and we have a very nice albeit a shorter liturgy. When I have the oppostunity, I'd love to experience this very high mass.

  • After all, Catholic is all Christians, not just those of the Roman Catholic denomination.

  • catholic means unviersial so in a way your right. a catholic should really say i am a "Roman catholic" meaning the universial church from rome

  • The Roman Catholic Church is but one Rite within the Catholic Church which recognizes the authority of Rome. It is incorrect to say 'Roman Catholic Church'. There are 23 other Churches that recognize the Pope.

  • You can say that again!

    The lord be with you!

  • This is a beautiful video. Anglicans are true Catholics, not wannabees. Although ceremonial is not the most important thing, we strive to do it well to the glory of God. I have many Roman Catholic friends who are deeply troubled by the intolerance and unwillingness to embrace Christ's Gospel of Love and Truth that they find in Rome. Some stay witnessing for Christ-and hoping for better liturgy-- in the Roman Chruch. Some find a new Catholic home in our Anglican (Episcopal USA) parish.

  • I followed a similar path out of Rome to ECUSA (TEC). I could no longer tolerate the "Do as we Say, Not as WE do" Attitude, along with "Pray, Pay, Obey and have No Say". Nonetheless I retain an abiding respect for my former church's better aspects in liturgy and music.

  • this is a high anglican mass not an rc service!!

  • i qute agree, we anglicans are the true church!!

  • Dont make me laugh..you are all heretics..king henry VIII started the CofE, because he couldnt get a divorce from being validly married. That is your history, and that was MY history. Anglican orders are invalid..thats why Anglicans flock to be converts to Roman Catholocism. lern your history..you will find your answer in the reign of Henry VIII

  • All this is interesting when you realize that in England after the Reformation everythibng in his video was banned and priest's who said the Latin Mass were put to death and and a crucifix found in your home could brand you as a "Papist" an get you burned at the stake... I am Roman Catholic and all I see here are wannabee Catholics...

  • Sorry but that is not correct. Elizabeth didn't burn anyone -- the Enghlish were so appalled by the 300 that Roman Catholic Queen Mary Tudor burnt. People who didn't attend Church of England services were fined. Jesuit priests were executed because they were plotting/encouraging the overthrow the "heretic Queen". Crucifixs were still allowed -- Elizabeth had one in her Chapel. And lets not forget, that the composer William Byrd published his great Massess openly.

  • I am a Presbyterian, but I appreciate this service style and think it ought to be implemented into Reformed worship. None of our rules say incense, sung prayers, etc are forbidden.

  • Type Scoto Catholic in your search bars and you will see that the Calvinist Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland which is an official member of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches(Presbyterian and Congregational)does have an organised movement that supports this within the Reformed tradition. Also the original Geneva Bible had the Apochrypha as a section between the 2 Testaments.

  • Thanks for your encouraging words! I did post the words to the hymn as a series of comments to this video, but there was some difficulty formatting them in order. I would be happy to email them if it was more convenient. The words were specially written for St Peter's Eastern Hill by former bishop of St Arnaud, Allen E. Winter. Have a happy and holy Easter!

  • So its an Anglican Parish? Thts pretty awesome that they are mopre traditional than actual Catholics! I smell reunification coming! Praise be to Christ the King

  • Beautiful hymn. I keep coming back to this video just to hear it!

  • The altar is marked with the sign of papal authority. It is Peter's cross and the keys of authority. The fight for unity must continue. As far as I am concerend this is no protestant church....if they protest anything, they protest against the loss of tradition with a fantastic liturgy!

  • I think the altar is marked first and foremost for Peter, for whom the church is named.

  • Really beatiful! If you are so close in mind and heart to the tradition and liturgy of the Catholic Church, why don't go the original and become a Catholic in communion with the Holy See?

    Greetings!

  • Amongst other things, because we don't subscribe to the view that the Pope is infallible, and that we should bindly follow what Rome dictates. As Anglicans we believe individual believers should use scripture, tradition and reason to find their answers. And unlike Rome we don't have problems co-existing with fellow Christians having different positions on theology, ritual and the moral issues of the day.

  • Most Anglicans will agree that following apostolic tradition is not following blind. It is following a 2000 year old path of collected illumination. This makes us classical Christians.

  • As far as "problems co-existing with different positions on theology, ritual and the moral issues of the day." We do, as well as conservative Anglicans have problems co-existing with the lies that are slowly infiltrating Christianity. Why should we co-exist with error? The beauty of being a Christian is that we are not always politically correct with the "morality" of present times. Politics change, the truths of Christ remain unchanged, unflexible, and uncompromising.

  • well said. i think the anglicans are far too tolerant of sin, they don't want to offend anyone or have them repent of any sin. Jesus was NOT passive about sin, and niether should His church be. im not anglican or catholic but i notice the anglican morals change w/ the times and the catholics stay steady for the most part, and if they do change, its to the better, they raise the bar rather than lower it.

  • i go to st. peter's anglican church in tallahassee, florida. i like the idea that anywhere in the world, if i was to go to an anglican church, it would be about the same. i like the consistancy

  • This is basically the exact liturgy as the original Roman Mass, only in english instead of Latin. I have read that the Bishops of 40,000 High Anglicans have signed a copy of the Catholic Catachism and have sent it to the Pope asking for communion with Rome. Let this long division be over so that we may fight side by side against the evils of Liberalism, secularism, and liturgical errors. IN CHRIST WE LIVE!

  • The clergy walk and act too fast. Combined with the song, it makes everything kinda creapy.

What was Rome's respond to their request for communion?

  • The video is running a little fast.

  • Many Anglican priest have now become ordained by the Catholic Church. It get's complicated when they get into property titles and such.

  • Actually, we usually do sing in Latin at St Peter's. Not the hymns, they're in english, but the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei are all sung in Latin. I'm in the choir, and I think it's wonderful that we're able to keep these old traditions, and the Latin language, alive and in use.

  • Kyrie is in Greek :)

  • Actually, as I sent that comment I remembered that, but too late to correct it. I feel silly now.

  • Every time that I get the "Someone replied" message, I click back here, only to hear that heavenly hymn... It is incredibly beautiful. I wish I lived in Australia just so that I could be a part of this parish. I envy you all! You all who are parishioners there are very blessed indeed. :)

  • The text was especially composed for St Peter's Eastern Hill by former Bishop of St Arnaud, Allen E. Winter. It was used at the Patronal High Mass as a Procession hymn - but I have stitched various parts of the liturgy to it as a 'backing track'. For reasons of length I had to cut one verse out - which is included in parenthesis below. I've included the text below by permission of St Peter's Eastern Hill but reproduction enquiries should be directed to the parish (see contact details on website)

  • 1. Christ Jesus Lord, who callest whom thou willest,

Turning to strength the hearts of human weakness,

Sing we the Rock-Man, name of highest honour,

    Blessed Saint Peter

    2. Fisherman lowly, called by thee his master,

Captive to love which drew his heart compelling,

Sent to proclaim thee, whom from heaven descendest,

    Bringing Salvation

  • [3. Fearless he went, on human strength relying,

Marched close beside thee to the moonlit garden,

Yet, sleeping, praying not when danger threatened,

    Thee, Lord, denying]

    4. Seeing thee risen, penitent and grieving,

Hearing from thee the gracious words of pardon,

Gladly and humbly went he forth proclaiming

    Thy love and pardon

  • 5. Faithful, courageous, laboured he to serve thee,

Love fired his heart, gave strength to his endeavour,

Saw he the fruits of patient supplication,

    Trophies for thee, Lord

    6. Come he at last, life's toil and travail ended,

Martyr of God, in life, in death, found faithful,

Thy solemn charge his loving heart surrendered.

    To thee the giver

  • 7. Lord, may we serve thee with his high devotion,

Strong with the strength from thee alone deriving,

To whom All-highest, Father, Son and Spirit,

    Praise be for ever.

    Words: Bp Allen E Winter

    Music: Iste confessor

  • I myself am a Roman Catholic, but whilst I was a nanny in England, I attended an Anglican service with the family. I deeply enjoyed the hymns. I think this service, courtesy of Yourtube, demonstrates a great bridge between the High Latin Tridentine use and the Low Anglican... wherefore, this could be called a High Anglican service. Very lovely!

  • Hi Joselyn. This IS an Anglican Mass. Yes it is Anglo Catholic as is my parish. I have attended Roman Catholic Masses with the introit being "I'm leaving on a jet plane..." as it was The Feast of the Ascension. There is great diversity amongst both churches. In Washington D.C. where I live, I find Episcopal Churches generally more "high church" than R.C. churches.

  • Please tell me you're not serious about the "leaving on a jet plane" being sung.

Myself, I'm a Roman Catholic but am also comfortable attending Anglican services. I attend Mass in our RC cathedral on a weekly basis. I attend both Anglican and RC services on special occasions (Easter, Christmas etc). This coming Easter for instance the choir in our Anglican Cathedral will sing a Festival Eucharist which will include Mozart's Coronation Mass. As a Mozartian, I'm really looking forward to it.

  • Thank You, Alexander! I deeply appreciate the hard work you put into finding the text for me! Pax Christi semper tecum! :)

  • My pleasure! I hope you enjoyed the video and remember us if you're ever in this hemisphere! Peace.

  • I REALLY love the song that they're singing in this clip. Does anyone happen to know what it's called? :)

  • I'm not sure what text is being sung here, but the hymn tune is "Rouen" and appears at number 360 in the Episcopal Hymnal 1982. Hope this helps :-)

  • Alright, tnx.. it's nice indeed :)

  • So many bishop!

  • why don't you just become Catholic?

  • Because the Anglicans are already Catholic.

  • How do you explain that one?

  • The thinking is that, if the Reformation-era innovations are removed from Anglican practice, what you have left is the original Catholic worship.

Whether one has to be in communion with Rome to be Catholic is a more complex question, to be sure.

  • Also those belonging to the Anglican Communion consider themselves members of "one holy catholic and apostolic church" -- catholic meaning universal. So the Anglican communion is but one part of God's entire universal church. Therefore Anglicans are catholic, but not Roman Catholic.

  • beautiful - thank you!
