I always thought this song was either about the "music industry" or those "fake fans" who just listen to whatever is hip at the time. I think the music industry is right on though. Bunch of old dinosaurs who can't and won't change. Hell, Kurt and all of the Seattle Scene gave it a good shot. Remember how in the 90's you could just feel a change coming? All the nerds were cool, the jocks were jerks and individuality was in - posers were out and it was all good. I miss that feeling. I miss Kurt.

yeah, i cant really see a sound difference, except for the youngness in Grohl's voice in the earlier stuff. But i can certainly see a change in lyrics style. This stuff is more out there and kinda Nirvana-y whereas the newer stuff is deeper and carries and impact to get the old customer coming back for more.
